Taking the temperatures, giving the pills To remedy mankind’s numerous ills, Feeding the babies, answering the bells, Being polite with a heart that rebels. Longing for home, and all the while Wearing the same old professional smile, Blessing the new-born baby’s first breath C’osing the eyes that are stilled in death. Taking the blame for all mistakes, Oh, Dear! What a lot of patience it takes. Going off duty at seven o’clock Tired, discouraged and ready to drop, But called out to help at seven-fifteen, With woe in the heart that must not be seen. Morning and evening, noon and night, Just doing it over, hoping it’s right. When we report off to cross the bar, DEAR LORD, will YOU give us just one little star, To wear on the cap of our uniform new In the ward above where the head nurse is YOU. pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully. I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowlinglv administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling. With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician in his work and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care.” e T solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly to To Miss Frances Farthing by The Graduating Class of the Cabarrus County Hospital School of Nursing WITH GREATEST RESPECT AND APPRECIATION ALL MEMBERS OF THE CLASS FOUND IN HER A FRIEND WHOSE FAIR AND JUST ADMINISTRATION WAS EVER TEMPERED WITH PATIENT UNDERSTANDING AND GENUINE KINDNESS DEDICATED THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Members Present: C. We privileged two were allowed to consult the strange “beauties” about your future—your future—and your future! Upon questioning we found that your futures looked very bright. Paula Creasy is foreseen on Broadway co-starred with Dan Dailey in their latest hit. She is still waiting for Ray to finish his studies at Chapel Hill. We understand that Anna Hunt has resumed her position as superintendent of Newton Hospital since little Jimmy entered the first grade this year. By the way, Reynolds joined the navy to take that slow boat to China to be near Lewis. Mary Anne Smith finally got to Colorado where she took a course in Pediatrics. She is now seen putting it into practice with her twin girls. Oh, yes—she married that mortician who is doing quite well with his own funeral home. In a little bungalow on the suburbs of Kannapolis, we find Mary Daniels taking care of Ralph, Jr. and doing private duty in her spare time. After finishing a post graduate course in Obstetrics at Margaret Hague, Bonnie is supervisor of the Obstetrical Floor at ole Cabarrus where she assists Dr. Monroe in the Delivery Room and spends her free time helping Miss Farthing with her students. But what’s this the witches see—a sparkler on her third finger, left hand? Nixon married and is now living in Canada where she is doing public health nursing. Her husband, a Royal Mounted Policeman, is none other than Bob Fortune. You guessed it! Bounds married that red-headed man (incidentally he’s a millionaire) and is living in Maryland with her nine little red heads. Oh, yes—we find Bryant working in the Operating Room at Duke Hospital after receiving her B.S. degree from there. But those good-looking interns haven’t taken the place of that mortician in her heart. Yep! That’s Clay way down in Stanly County. We hear she is quite busy working for Dr. Yow in that new Heart Clinic of his. We hope her heart can stand the strain! When we asked the witches what the future held in store for us, they replied that Garland will keep her position as supervisor of the Operating Room at Rowan Memorial Hospital where she uses REXAIR to keep the place “spic and span.” “Tats” will get that long awaited position as steamship nurse aboard the “Queen Elizabeth” bound for England. (That sea fever really nipped her.) They predict that she will soon be the Captain’s Mate! Should we believe the witches? We thought it best to let you in on our big secret, but we’ll just have to wait and see the outcome of the forecasting. The Prophets 16 Kathleen Morgan Bertiia Garland LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT The Nursing School Cabarrus County Hospital Concord, North Carolina TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: We the Senior Class of 1949 of Cabarrus County Hospital School of Nursing, having been notified by our superintendent, Miss Louise Harkey, that our approaching disintegration is near, and by the advice of our advisor, Miss Frances Farthing, made peace with our enemies, the staff, and our rivals, the Junior Class, being in sane mind, do hereby publish, and make known this our last will and testament. FIRST—To all who through their efforts and untiring zeal have made our school possible, we leave our deepest gratitude. SECOND—We thank the faculty for their leniency in grading us, for we know that our success has depended largely on the kindness of their dis- position toward us.—And hope that the State Board of Nurses’ Examiners do likewise. THIRD—To all the doctors we give our deepest gratitude for their efforts toward increasing our wisdom. FOURTH-To the Classes: 1. To the Juniors we leave the honor of Cabarrus County Hospital, with the hope that they will be as loyal daughters as we have been. We also leave them our Senior privileges. 2. To the Freshmen, we bequeath our advice that they study as the teachers require and obey them at all times. FIFTH—To the various persons we leave the follow- ing: I, Lucille Bondurant, leave my quiet ways and ability to stay out of mischief to Ann Westmore- land in hope that she will profit by them as I have. I, Ruby Bounds, would leave my onions to Margaret Sechler but I cannot bring myself to part with them. I, Margaret Bryant, bequeath my ability to keep a straight face in a funny situation to Joyce Brewer. Here’s hoping she keeps up the tradi- tion! I, Nancy Clay, give my singing ability to Clatie Pickett so that she may improve Cody’s Glee Club. I, Paula Creasy, leave my dancing ability to Joyce Brewer and may her future partners prof- it by it. I, Mary Daniels, leave my sincerity to Frances Barringer. I, Bertha Garland, leave my love for convertibles to “Dolly Moore.’’ I, Anna Hunt, leave Dix Hill to the “one out of ten” who will have to go. I, Kathleen Morgan, bequeath my unfaltering determination to complete the nursing course and graduate to Faye Ballinger with the confi- dent belief that my bequest will not be in vain. I, Ruth Nixon, leave my energy to Bernell Jolley I, Stella Reynolds, will my hair net to Doris Black. “It’s all yours!” I, Mary Anne Smith, leave my problems of love life to Rachel Stonestreet. “They are too much for me.” Finally, we the Senior Class of 1949, do make, constitute, and declare the Senior Class of 1949 to be the executors of this our last will and testament. In witness whereof, we hereunto subscribe our names this twenty-sixth day of April, in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and forty- nine. There seemed, and there seems to me no field in which these could be used for the greater blessing of Humanity than in the nursing profession. Whether we like it or dislike it, we are living in a sick world and all around 11s there are those whose hands no longer can help themselves, and whose hearts are beyond all feeling. What better use, then, could I make of my hands than to serve and to help those who are no longer able to help themselves and of my mind than to think for those too weary to think for themselves, and of my heart than to feel for those in pain? In facing life, what finer prayer can be prayed than that found in the famous old hymn of Francis R. Havergal? “Take my life and let it he Consecrated, Lord, to thee; Take my hands and let them move At the impulse of Thy Love. Take my feet and let them be Swift and beautiful for thee; Take my voice; and let me speak In tenderest tones to those whole weak. Take my will and make it Thine; It shall no longer be mine. Take my heart, it is Thine own; It shall be Thy royal throne. Take my love; my Lord, I pour At thy feet its treasure store; Take myself, and I will be, Ever, only, all for Thee.” “For inasmuch as ye have done it unto the least of these, ye have done it unto Me.” PICKETT STONESTREET HOLLAND HARWOOD JUNIORS OFFICERS Clatie Pickett................................President Rachel Stonestreet.......................Vice-President Jeanne Holland................................Secretary Ruby Harwood T reasurer BARRINGER BALLINGER BREWER HARWOOD HOLLAND BLACK JOLLEY Frances Barringer Point Peter, Georgia Faye Ballinger Asheville, North Carolina Doris Black Kannapolis, North Carolina Joyce Brewer Winston-Salem, North Carolina Ruby Harwood Albemarle, North Carolina Jeanne Holland Charlotte, North Carolina Bernell Jolley Kannapolis, North Carolina NINETEEN FORTY-NINE JUNIORS KINES MOORE PETREA PICKETT SECHLER STONESTREET WESTMORELAND Margaret Sechler Kannapolis, North Carolina Lottie Kines Lexington, North Carolina Earline Moore Concord, North Carolina CABARRUS COUNTY HOSPITAL Lois Petrea Kannapolis, North Carolina Clatie Pickett Liberty, North Carolina Rachel Stonestreet Mooresville, North Carolina Ann Westmoreland Kannapolis, North Carolina k DL M($ i uniord Cheek to cheek . . .
