wfcstlin The i979-80 Pioneer Wrestling squad enjoyed a successful season. The l26 lb. Steve Fontana again gained Division ll All-American honors for the green and gold - becoming Post's first three-time wrestling All-American. Also travelling with Fontana to Omaha, Nebraska forthe national championships was John Rocco Cl l8 lbs.l, Kevin Smith U34 lbs.l, Steve Candela U42 lbs.l, and Dave Ruvola at l67 lbs. Unfortunately Fontana was the only Pioneer to bring home a medal. Senior Steve Candelo ended a fine wrestling career here at Post, posting 56 wins in his career including numerous tournament places. Among his tourna- ment places are a 2nd and lst in the Post tournament, a 6th, 5th, and 3rd in the Metropolitan Conference Tournament, a 5th in the Coast Guard Invitational, and o 4th and 2nd in the Eastern Regionals. Junior Steve Fontana's 25-4 record of the i979-80 season gives him lO2 career wins, leaving him tive short ot Don Jant- zen, Post's all-time record holder for career wins. Steve will most probably go on to be Post's winningest wrestler of all- time next season.

volleyball We celebrated our most successful volleyball season ever this past fall semester of l979, finishing with a tot- al of l6 wins and 8 losses. Besides setting the best record in its tive year history, the volleyball team included within its l6 win performance, a 9 game winning streak as well. The Central Connecticut Tourna- ment was the opening showplace where we played such powerhouses as Yale, Springfield, and Southern Connecticut, other impressive victor- ies included games against Oneonta and New Hampshire. Next, we con- tinued on to defeat Division l: Bar- nard, Farleigh Dickinson University, and New York Tech twice. The team then climaxed their season upon qual- ifying for the final eight of the N.Y.S.A.l.A.W. Division ll State Tournament, a record for the team as well. We faced teams including Brock- port, Colgate, and St. John Fischer, the latter being the eventual state champion. Coach Kathy Solano felt, there was a good combination of enthusias- tic, young talent together with a good consistent play by the team veter- ans. Three seniors graduate this year who have been starters all four years. They are Janice Rawlings, Karen Schaeffer, and Chris Giets- chier.
