Post Pioneer basketball squad, despite a 70-52 loss to the number one small college team in the nation lLong Island Uni- versityl, was able to complete a highly suc- cessful season, I3-9, under the able coaching of Dr. George Kaftan. Led by the shooting of Mel Cheek and sophomore Jim McDonald, and the hustling of Dave Scott, the Pioneers came within a very short distance of receiving a bid from the N. C. A. A. Small College Tournament by possibly winning the North-East Collegiate Basketball Conference. Junior Mel Cheek was the fourth leading scorer in league play, with a 20.4 average, and first on the team in field goal percent- age: I49 of 270, 55.2 percent. He holds this season's record for most points scored in one game: 33 against Merrimack and 42 against Southern Connecticut. Jim McDonald was second in scoring and the big man under the boards, while iunior Stuart Goldman, besides averaging over I0 points a game, was the leading scorer from the free-throw line with a 69.9 percentage. Captain and returning let- terman Tony Licata played brilliantly this year and was the motivating force that kept the team together.
