The soccer team, under Coach Don Ungare-Hi completed their best season since 1961, Whiclvq ended in a bid to the NCAA Soccer Tournamem, Using a new brand of soccer, which relies mainly on fast breaks and a short passing game, the Pioneers concluded their season with a 7-5-1 rec. ord. Their winning season may be attributed 10 the players' spirit and determination. The superior performance of this year's team was the result of an aggressive offense and strong defense. Helmut Gruber was the leading scorer, Co-Captain and goalie Ray Liebert led the defense in three encounters: shut-outs against City College of New York and Brooklyn College and the 3.2 win over Southampton. Liebert allowed only 18 goals in 11 games. At the beginning of the season the team tied Kings Point, trounced Hofstra 4-2 and defeated Pace 2-1. Defeats were suffered at the hands of the number one team in the east, Long Island University and Fairleigh Dickinson University. ln three consecutive wins, the Pioneers beat City College of New York, Southampton and Brooklyn College. With much struggle Adelphi University triumphed over the Pioneers with a final score of 1-2. Post concluded its season with a 2-1 win over Queens College and a 1-O shutout over Pratt Institute. A maiority of the Pioneers will be graduated in June, with the return of several outstanding let- termen, the prospects for another winning season are good. Pioneers move the ball down field
