To the Class 0f1962- As I have observed the Class of 1962, I have come to appreciate their part in controlling and directing life on the campus this past year. The whole tone, character and spirit has been on a higher plane than in any previous year. While the members of the class have been gaining in maturity and breadth of outlook, so has the College. When you graduate I hope that you will recall with pleasure your undergraduate years here and that you will take pride in your association with your classmates and fellow students. You have seen changes taking place as the C ollege has developed. I ts growth in physical facilities and in academic excellence has been phenomenal by any measurement. You have helped greatly to establish its position as a liberal arts college of recognized merit and stature. I wish you every success and congratulate you on your achievements here, both individually and as the Class of1962. As Alumni, come back often to visit the campus. To paraphrase a famous American, llWe will return. RICHARD L. CONOLLY Admiral, U. S. N. tRetJ President, C. W. Post College MESSAGE FROM THE PROVOST OF C. W. POST COLLEGE l This message was written the evening before the tragic death of Admiral and Mrs. ConollyJ It is with a mingling of wistfulness and a bit of nostalgia, along with courage and good hope, that we complete the 1962 academic year. We are about to lose the president of our college and of our university, Admiral Richard Lansing Conolly. He has announced his intentions of retiring-a retirement richly deserved but regretfully accepted by all those who compromise the family that is Long Island University and C. W. Post College. Whereas Admiral Conollyls larger task, magnificently carried out, has been the development of the university as a whole, it is understandable that those of us at Post feel that here is his most special accomplishment. There were those in 1954 who said that this new college would not long survive. But there was no doubt in the minds of the first entering class of 102 men and 19 women who began their instruction on September 22, 1955. Along with the eight faculty members, when they gathered about the flag pole for the simple opening ceremony, they gained a sense of mission and objective. They felt, as this distinguished patriot expressed it, that they could iitake their places as leaders and useful citizens. . . 3i And they called themselves the Pioneers. But there was no endowment, no funds for new buildings-only a courage and a will. Today, seven years later, the miracle that has been accom- plished in a strong college with a magnificent physical plant is the mark of one man and of those who served with him. Generation after generation of Post College graduates will remember the Collegels first President, Admiral Conolly. Much of his indomitable courage and spirit will always be in the classrooms, on the playing fields, and at commencement itself. And so we salute H you, Admiral Conolly, and bid you Godspeed. We are deeply Mfr , grateful to you for the opportunity you have made possible. R. GORDON HOXIE, Provost-Dean naval: raw: :1! a a M 3
