Standing: George Kaftan, Coach, Howie Shapiro, Glen Crawely, John Zureck, Richie Goldberg, Ron Ludwin, Herb Brown, Asst. Coach. Basketball The 1961-62 season was one of surprise, one of agony, one of ecstacy. C. W. Post started the season with a faint dream of finishing with a winning record, but completed their regular seasonis schedule with a 17-3 record; losing to Hofstra twice and Yeshiva once. But the critics of Post said that they played easy com- petition; if they met some stronger teams they would be beaten quite easily. Post disproved this theory when, at the end of the season, they were invited to two tournaments: the N.A.I.A. Tournament, which 56the Pioneersii rejected, and the NCAA Small College Tournament which was accepted. Post met Hofstra in the first round. Hofstra, being ranked second nationally, was a heavy favorite over Post. But Post dehnitely outplayed Hof- stra, losing to them by one point. The next night they lost to Albright. The Pioneers proved to small college basketball that they could play against top night com- petition. Mike Brandeis led the team in scoring with 494 points in 22 games. He was also selected to the A11- Metropolitan Basketball team. Frank Townsend gained second team honors. Other top men on Coach Kaftanis squad were, 666 John Zureck, who led the team in rebounding, 6'6 Howie Shapiro, 656 Richie Goldberg, 65 Marco Benedetto and 5'6 backcourtman Lou Burger.
