Peepl Peepl Peep! Some of us were beginning to peck through. Mrs. M. G. Thompson and Mr. Frank Wilson, Jr. helped us come out of our shells. Valgene Gibbs and Joseph Tyson presided over the two broods. Outstanding this year were James Nichols, who won the History Award, Beulah Weeks, secretary-elect of the Student Council, and Wista Adams, who won the local Civics Award and the first place in the State Typing Contest. Mary Jane Sherrod reignedas Homecoming Queen for the class. The year was highlighted by our freshman party to which most of the female nestlings went in early evening with escorts for the first time. As wiser littlebiddies, we fluffed our downy feathers proudly when we returned to school in the fall as soph- omores. Mrs. O. B. Myers and Mrs. S. L. Davenport, our advisers, provided excellent mash to keep us growing. Valgene Gibbs and Joseph Tyson continued as presidents of the two divisions. Our class produced the prize- winning skit, Pa Has a Fit, in a school dramatic tournament. Beulah Weeks was again elected secretary of the Student Council and Milbon Cobb and Samuel Daniels earned certificates in masonry. Shirley Smith was the honored chickabiddy serving as class queen. Our Homecoming float this year The Spirit of Liberty evoked many comments as it rolled along in the pqrqde, We felt we were rather important chicks when we reached our iunior year, since we were now in the senior high school division, and we looked forward eagerly to the Junior-Senior Prom. Our advisers, Miss E. L. McConnell and Mr. A. E. Murrell reminded us constantly that we must keep scratching diligently to get choice worms. Knowing that we had much business to transact this year, the class was organized as one unit, with Joseph Tyson serving as president for the third time. Outstanding chicks were Eleanor Newton, winner pf the French Prize, Governor Anderson, recipient of a certificate in masonry, Beulah Weeks, Student Council secre- tarial nomineefor a third term, Jimmy Jones, StudentCouncil president-GLGCTI Gnd DelOiS 5herrod,Shirley, Daniels and Wista Adams, winners of typing certificates from Cortez-Peters School of Business. Wista Adams and Ester Sneed were marshals. Our Junior-Senior Banquet A Night in Hawaii was a tremendous successl There was much activity in the barnyard our senior yearl Mrs. E, B, Graves and Mrs. L. C. Hunter cautioned us not to count our chickens before they were hatched and kept us from being ChiCken-hearted under an avalanche of assignments. Herbert Harper was class President. Since we were almost full-grown hens and roosters, the whole student body, it seemed, looked to us for leadership. Joe Baker was elected president of the Safety Patrol and The Hi-Y, Valgene Gibbs, The Little Theatre, The N. H. A. and the Tri-Hi-Y, Dorothy White, the band, Joseph Tyson, The Teen-Age Club, Wista Adams, The F. B. L. A., David Williams and Eleanor Newton, two divisions of Le Cercle Francais, James Brewington, The Glee Club, and Jimmy Jones, The Student Council. Joseph Tyson and James Brewington were co-captains of the football team, Robert Edwards and James Brewington were co-captains of the basketball team. Beulah Weeks served her fourth year as secretary of the Student Council . James Brewington was signally honored when he was chosen to play tackle on the All-State High School Team. The publication of the third edition of the Eppesonion, one of the most gratifying class proiects this year, was a fitting climax to four enioyable years of school life. CLASS PRGPHECY Chanticleer had something on his mind. Meet me in the northeast corner of the barnyard when all the Cl1lCkenS have gone to roost, he crowed. I have something to show you. l was surprised to find that the old rooster had unearthed a crystal ball while scratching for tidbits. Brushing his wing slowly over the ball, he cried, Look closely, now. After the cloud clears, we may see into the future. This is what we saw: Governor Anderson in his own barber shop in Times Square, cutting the hair of the Nobel Prize winner, novelist Milbon Cobb Wista Adams, head of the business departmentof the University of Pittsburg, conferring with her assistant, Shirley Daniels James Brewington, coaching the Washington Redskins Joe Baker, pondering over a problem at General Motors, where he was working as an electrical engineer David Blackwell, Charles Carney, and Otis Darden, three very efficient dentists, operating a successful clinic in Pasadena, California Robert Coward and Russell Vines, working as electrical engineers at the Radio Corporation of America, in New York City Floyd Dickens, acting as chief electronic engineer at General Electric Company, Schenectady, New York William Ebron, playing first base, and William Teel, playing catcher, on the team of the New York Giants Chief of Police Evelyn Floyd, supervising the Tampa, Florida, policewomen Alice Streeter and Lillian Floyd, serving as airline hostesses for Pan-American Airlines Herbert Harper, directing the United States Navy Band in Washington, D. Lookl l did look and l saw myself, the owner of a dental laboratory and the employer of twenty technicians, and just as l'd love to have it. . .I was right in line, working as hard as any one of theml LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT After four years of scratching and pecking for a healthy literary diet, we, the graduating class of I957, discover that we have accumulated many valuable possessions worthy of crowing about that we would like to bequeath to those persons we leave behind. Our profound gratitude goes to Mr. W. H. Davenport, our principal, who ever kept our wings clipped to keep us from flying the coop. Our gratitude we extend, also, to our faculty, whose constant guiding light furnished the energy by which we grew. WIT NESSES: Chicken Little J IMMYE JONES Henny-Penny Testotor Ducky-Wucky Class Song Tune: Moments To Remember January to December. . .we'll have moments to remember. The first bright day we came to school, The day we learned the golden rule. . . We'll have these moments to remember. The quiet halls, the noisy fun, The football games we almost won. . . We'll have these moments to remember. Tho' summer turns to winter and the present disappears, The laughter we were glad to share will echo through the years Dear old Eppes High, we love you so, We'll love you e'en tho' years may go.. . You've given us moments to remember. The end of the year has finally come, Our work, dear ones, has iust begun. . . We leave these moments to remember. VALGENE GIBBS Class Poem We are leaving now, dear classmates, with memories aglow, For our work at Eppes is over, and onward we must go. Fondly we remember each moment that we shared, Ne'er shall we forget them. . .the many things ,we dared. For four long years we've studied, trying to succeed: Now our goal 's accomplished, and it's time to leave. We are very grateful to those who have helped us so, We shall not forget them as time goes on. . . No! We still have roads to travel to reach our highest goal, And we will work unceasingly with heart, with mind, with soul Dear old Eppes High School, we pledge ourselves to thee, In our hearts remain ever our truth our loyalty.
