STATEBOUN '87 The 1987 baseball season started out slowly, but surely. The team finished 6-7 in the pre-season and started out in district with losses to Northside and Everman. hen Coach Turner and the 21 members of the Bear team decided that changes were in order. ln the pre-season we played like individuals and thought we could fin that way, said lohn Turner, second baseman. Then after our first two district losses, we knew we had to play as a team to win. Then the magic began. The ears began a winning streak that just wouldn't stop. They swept their next ten opponents in district and ended up in a three-way tie for Zone Champs. A coin toss rew a bye for the Bears to the Zone Championship game where they faced Everman, who defeated North Side in order to play the Bears. When the night was ver, the Bears had advanced with a 20-10 victory over the Bulldogs. Then the 4A-4 State Playoffs began. ln the first round, the Bears were matched up against the lranbury Pirates. The series was tied 1-1 after the Bears lost the first game and came back with a strong second victory. ln the third game, Steve Putnam homered J send the game into extra innings, where lohn Turner knocked in the winning run. The Bears moved on to Hirshi and set their sights on the Bi-District Ihampionship. Once again, the Bears started off with a first game loss to the Huskies. But in the second game, pitcher Donny Carlisle led the attack and the Bears efeated Wichita Falls. The final game of the three game series was played in Gainesville and the Bears blew the Huskies away with an eight run rally in the final ming. The next ball club to fall victim to the unstoppable Bear team, which was led by starting pitcher Ronnie Powers, was the Hereford Herd. Due to inclement feather, the series was to be decided with only one game. But this made no difference to the Bears and they walked away with another victory and the Regional Ihampionship with two homeruns by Devin Dixon. The Bears moved on to Brownwood, determined to play in the State Tournament. The site of these games was J be Waco at the Baylor campus. Due to the flooding in the area and the tornado warnings, the first game was moved back to Burleson. The Bears won the first ame 4-0. Then they traveled to Waco where officials worked feverishly to get the water soaked field in shape. The Bears lost the second game 10-8 and came rack to win the third 10-0. The Bears were Austin Bound. The hard work, long hours of practice and team effort finally paid off for the team. The Bears had been ised to having three game series during the playoffs and now had to deal with only one game at a time. In the first game, the Bears were matched with Powderly -lorth Lamar, however, North Lamar turned out to be no match for the Bears as they won easily 8-1. On this day, the Bears biggest opponent turned out to be the 00+ degree weather in Disch Faulk Stadium. This victory cinched the Bears a place in the State Championship game and gave Brewer pitcher Ronnie Powers the tate record in all divisions for having the most wins in a single season. Powers broke the old record of 20 wins and set a new one with 22 wins. The game was vlayed and history was made. The Bears had never come this far before. In the State Championship game, the Bears fell to the Brenham Cubs, a team that had nuch more experience and many State Championships to their credit. This was a heartbreaking loss for the Bears that brought an end to a memorable and magical eason. The Brewer Bears had to settle for being 2nd in State, but they will always be W1 in our hearts. - - -- H... 11 . . , ...... .41 m 1 Sf- - Y . ...... ..,, S' 'mi , Tfffzir' . , Aga -'f ?'. ...mum Hereford.
