A whistle is heard as the 151 member Brewer Marching Band returns to start the show that will eventually become their contest performance. At the start, the directors are responsible for selecting the right type of music. Then they go to work trying to create formations which fit the music. Over thirty hours is put into developing one show. The brass section is usually placed in the center since it must project the most sound, whereas the woodwinds are placed on each side forming a mirror image, with the percussion, drill team, majorettes and flags placed in the surrounding areas. The endeavors of band members, however, began paying off. The marching band was invited to perform a half-time at Texas Christian University and a pregame at East Texas State University. The band has also been to two contests. At Cleburne, they received a superior rating at the Cleburne contest as well as U.l,L. The Brewer Band was one of two bands chosen to represent this area at the state contest in Austin. One thing that makes the Brewer marching band special is that they are strictly a volunteer organization. No one is required to participate in this facet of the band program, which makes their accomplish- ments carry even more weight. The 1980-81 Bre er Marching Band 8 u. 122 g W ,V . in Y Woody Allen once said that 'll would never belong to an organization which would have someone like me as a member. However, this statement does not apply to Brewer students, since a large percentage of the student body is involved in extracurricular activities. Clubs offer fun, excitement, extracurricular activities, and a chance to get to know and be with people. Because no class time is provided for these clubs, they have to meet before and after break. Clubs provide services for the community, school, and are constantly busy building school spirit and improving the facilities to make Brewer a better place in which to get an education. L. Raye Lynn Hall was chosen this year as the Brewer Band Sweetheart. After four years of Symphonic Band, three years Marching Band, two years, in jazz Band and one year as majorette, she was a row leader and a French Horn Soloist for the Marching Band. When the band received their superior rating and the news of state at U.l.L., all Raye could do was cry and say 'll have always wanted to go to state, and now my Senior year is the best ever! Congratulations Raye Lynn on receiving such an honor. 1980-1981 Band Sweetheart Raye Lynn Hall Band Sweetheart .1
