Homecoming Activities 1980 Senior Debbie Welch, the 1980 Homecoming Queen, is escorted at half time by Senior joe Wethington. The 1980 Brewer Homecoming was full of broken traditionsg the Sophomores won the hall decorating contest, Mrs. Ballard resigned as cheerleader sponsor and the football team beat the undefeated Diamond Hill Eagles. Many hours were spent decorating the halls, doors, and the gym, making this homecoming the best ever. During the Homecoming pep rally, as the band played More softly in the background, john Hibbs announced the Homecoming court. Nominees were Linna Pape, Gina Whitaker, Cyndi Gibson, Susan Benfer, and Dana DeShong. They were escorted by Don Wester, Brant Ingram, Steve Lemons, jeff Griffin and Brad Howard, respectively. Miss Debbie Welch was crowned 1980-81 Homecoming Queen while escorted by joe Whethington. The delight of the crowd was shown by applause. However, there were sad moments during pep rally. After fifteen years, Mrs. Ballard handed her position as cheerleader sponsor to Mrs. Nophsker. Another tradition was broken. The climax of the homecoming activities has always been the Brewer Bears football game, and this year was no exception. As the traditional blue and white balloons floated into the air, the band played the fight song. As was expected, the Band, Drum Major, Majorettes, Flag Corps and Drill Team were in fine form for their part of the Homecoming half-time performance. During the half-time Debbie Welch, the Homecoming Queen, and her court were presented to the crowd. An old tradition was broken when, along with Coming-Home Queen Barbara Hart- man, a Coming-Home King, Corky Holland, was elected. More traditions were broken as the Brewer Bears defeated the Diamond Hill Eagles 20-16, allowing the students to celebrate a long-awaited Homecoming victory. Homecoming o 11
