Crashing sounds of lockers being slammed fill the air. The halls are lined with people on the wall, Forming small cliques are the socials, freaks, snobs, brains, jocks, and primps-the scene on any ordinary day. What makes this a new beginning? 1980-81 was the year of electionsg soon there would be a new President of the United States, Which would it be, Carter-Mondale, Reagan-Bush or Anderson-Lucy? A new congressman would be elected to represent the local congressional districtg would it be Wright or Bradshaw? In the new beginning teams would rise to the top in Pro Footballp would it be the Cowboys, Steelers, Patriots, or Eagles? Opening . 3 The Phillies beat the Royals in a World Series noticeably lacking Yankee participa- tion. New fads would surface, such as baggies, skin-tights, miniskirts, or bell bottoms. As a decade begins things change and new questions emerge. In politics, in sports, and in fashion, each day is a new beginning for Brewer students. The band hall is a current addition to Brewer. Though construction began in january of 1979, only since April has the facility been used. Included features are eight sound proof rooms, each offering a place for solo or group practice. Two offices enable the directors to work with more individual students. A uniform room, an instrument room, a music library, a rehearsal hall, a classroom and several other attractions gave the band a new feeling of excitement. The band hall marks a new beginning for the Brewer High Band. New courses, new teachers, new buildings, new spirit, a new season and a new team. All of these represent breaks in tradition, with most changes needed and greatly appreciated by the students and faculty, 1980-81 was clearly a year of new beginnings for Brewer High School. 4 o OPENING Students decorate the hallways for Homecoming. To anyone passing by, it would seem as though the school was empty and lifeless. However, within the school itself, students continue their work. Even as the teachers work on their lessons for the upcoming day, athletes prepare themselves physically for the upcoming game. The sound of volleyballs being spiked and set is heard as the girls practice for a tournament. Meetings of all sorts take place. Posters are painted as others sit ready to be hung. National Honor Society Secret Pals decorate lockers for their favorite athlete. Cheer- leaders devote their time to making signs and posters to decorate the gym for the next pep rally, then work on special skits, dance routines and cheers. Late in the evening the doors are closed, only to be opened early the next morning for the 7:00 practices, the band, drillteam, majorettes and flag corps are so well adjusted to. All of this continues day after day as well as other things. It is all a part of the after school students and their devotion to Brewer High School. Extracurricular 0 7 Academics Widen Their blllties Reading, writing, and arithmetic used to be what school was all about, however, here at Brewer, students are fortunate in that the basics are paired with higher level courses that help them prepare for college. Classes such as Computer Math, Comprehensive Logic, and the honors sections provide advanced work in particular areas of study. Computer Math is a new addition for those students interested in computer programming and computer science. This class is designed to teach students to write programs for business applications such as payroll and inventories. They also learn to write simple games and use graphics to create pictures and charts as output. More topics covered by the course are basic computer science and programming structures. Comprehensive Logic Verbal and Math are courses which prepare students for the college entrance examinations, such as the P.S.A.T,, S.A.T., and A.C.T. This class is focused on such areas as vocabulary, analogies, sentence completion, reading comprehension, and literary interpretation. Comprehensive Logic not only provides a better understanding of these subjects, but 2 Qi BAm4r will uzANNA I - The Whiz Kids Team-Barry Sullenburger, Rob Durko, Deanna Brinkley and Billy Farris. spr RS in 5 .'! 4' Seniors take notes in class. .Q ,Ki ani.. Students prepare to take the SAT, students examine test-taking techniques, complete problems like those on the actual test, and play games which are designed to increase their verbal and mathematical ability. The honors system deals with subjects such as English I, ll, Ill, World History, and American History. More individual creativity is involved so that higher quality work is required. These classes, which are usually taken by college bound students, include activities such as visits to museums, theaters, and the History fair. Homecoming Homecoming Activities 1980 Senior Debbie Welch, the 1980 Homecoming Queen, is escorted at half time by Senior joe Wethington. The 1980 Brewer Homecoming was full of broken traditionsg the Sophomores won the hall decorating contest, Mrs. Ballard resigned as cheerleader sponsor and the football team beat the undefeated Diamond Hill Eagles. Many hours were spent decorating the halls, doors, and the gym, making this homecoming the best ever. During the Homecoming pep rally, as the band played More softly in the background, john Hibbs announced the Homecoming court. Nominees were Linna Pape, Gina Whitaker, Cyndi Gibson, Susan Benfer, and Dana DeShong. They were escorted by Don Wester, Brant Ingram, Steve Lemons, jeff Griffin and Brad Howard, respectively. Miss Debbie Welch was crowned 1980-81 Homecoming Queen while escorted by joe Whethington. The delight of the crowd was shown by applause. However, there were sad moments during pep rally. After fifteen years, Mrs. Ballard handed her position as cheerleader sponsor to Mrs. Nophsker. Another tradition was broken. The climax of the homecoming activities has always been the Brewer Bears football game, and this year was no exception. As the traditional blue and white balloons floated into the air, the band played the fight song. As was expected, the Band, Drum Major, Majorettes, Flag Corps and Drill Team were in fine form for their part of the Homecoming half-time performance. During the half-time Debbie Welch, the Homecoming Queen, and her court were presented to the crowd. An old tradition was broken when, along with Coming-Home Queen Barbara Hart- man, a Coming-Home King, Corky Holland, was elected. More traditions were broken as the Brewer Bears defeated the Diamond Hill Eagles 20-16, allowing the students to celebrate a long-awaited Homecoming victory. Cheers, yells, and shouts for victory are heard as the pep raHy begns Even though the afternoon pep rallies are not as crowded as the ones in the morning, there is no lack ofspmt To pep the students up, the cheerleaders start chants and do cheers. Enthusiasm grows as the assembly gets underway. Each week, to the enjoyment of the students, either the majorettes, drillteam, or flag corps perform one of their field routines. The Brewer Band plays a few selections each week as well as participating in the cheering sessions. The crowds show their appreciation with applause. There is always competition at pep rallies. Each class tries to outdo the other. This is a way of showing who has theinostspkHgconsequenUy,a spmtsuck is awarded to the group which best demonstrates enthusiasm at the pep rally. Varsity football players get ready for the pep rally, Pep Rallies ightlife Gffers Variety for Students The squeal of tires, bright lights, and crowded back seats were all a part of Friday and Saturday nights for many students. After football games, there are always fun-loving people gathering at Pizza lnn, McDonalds, Taco Bueno, Taco Bell, the Sonic, or almost any other place that stays open late. A new Cinema V in White Settlement provided variety in the night life of the city. At last, people did not have to drive to Western Hills to see an indoor movie. So much vitality was created by the victorious football games that just grabbing a bite to eat did not suffice for many students. Sometimes they would gather in the McKinney Auditorium parking lot. Camp loy also became one of the main places that attracted the rowdy Bear fans. While there they could swing in the swings, andjust enjoy the night visiting and cutting up, sometimes a few even chose to go for a swim. However, this statement does not apply to Brewer students, since a large percentage of the student body is involved in extracurricular activities. Clubs offer fun, excitement, extracurricular activities, and a chance to get to know and be with people. Because no class time is provided for these clubs, they have to meet before and after break. Clubs provide services for the community, school, and are constantly busy building school spirit and improving the facilities to make Brewer a better place in which to get an education. L. V ,Milf v we fm' va ,xt r...t Organization o 17 A whistle is heard as the 151 member Brewer Marching Band returns to start the show that will eventually become their contest performance. At the start, the directors are responsible for selecting the right type of music. Then they go to work trying to create formations which fit the music. Over thirty hours is put into developing one show. The brass section is usually placed in the center since it must project the most sound, whereas the woodwinds are placed on each side forming a mirror image, with the percussion, drill team, majorettes and flags placed in the surrounding areas. The endeavors of band members, however, began paying off. The marching band was invited to perform a half-time at Texas Christian University and a pregame at East Texas State University. The band has also been to two contests. At Cleburne, they received a superior rating at the Cleburne contest as well as U.l,L. The Brewer Band was one of two bands chosen to represent this area at the state contest in Austin. One thing that makes the Brewer marching band special is that they are strictly a volunteer organization. No one is required to participate in this facet of the band program, which makes their accomplish- ments carry even more weight. The 1980-81 Bre er Marching Band 8 u. The Symphonic Band is the finest instrumental group at Brewer High School. When the students decide to audition, they realize that a high standard of performance and attitude has been established. For the most part, these band members will continue their musical endeavors after they graduate from high school. In symphonic band two things should have been accomplished. According to Mr. Sergei, the student should have lldeveloped an appreciation for music in all areas and found the art of music a very valuable, personal aspect of their lives. 22 0 Symphonic Band Majorettes and Flag Corps Add to Halftime Show The 1980-81 Flag Corps attended East Texas State University this summer where they received a third place award. They also performed at Lamar receiving a superior which entitled them to second place. The flag corps has been growing each year. lt has become an important part of the marching band. While there they performed routines and were awarded superior, excellent, and good ribbons, along with receiving a spirit baton every night. On November 4, the University interscholastic League Contest was held at the University of Texas at Arlington. The majorettes performed an ensemble to Star Trek, receiving an excellent rating. Although they do not have an instructor to help them with the routines, they are able to compensate by using parts of former routines along with those learned at camp. Needless to say, the majorettes have done a fine job and deserve the praise of all Brewer students. She is a former member of the Rangerettes and specialized in high kick. Though hired very late during the summer, she did a very good job during marching season, teaching the girls five different field routines. Working with officers Tina Unsell, captain and senior, senior lieutenants Lisa Renneberg and Gina Whitaker, and junior lieutenants Stephanie Smith and Kim Southers, Miss Crimmons and the drill team had a fine season. 24 0 Drill Team Q . The sponsor, Mr. Ballard, began his first year with five returning members and twelve rookies. Together the staffs strived for fresh ideas to make the 1980-81 Bear Tracks the best annual in the history of Brewer High School. The annual staff sponsored the first annual Bohemian Beach Party and Dance. The attire was centered in shorts, sunglasses, and other beach clothes. The dance featured the ever-popular Seymour Lebowitz, better known as Phillip Kezerle, in a gorilla costume. Also sponsored by the annual staff was the Cinderfella contest. Nine brave guys strutted their stuff in competition for Miss Cinderfella. The young maidens competed in talent, wet T-Shirt, evening gown, and question and answer contests. The competition was stiff, but Penelope Puddintay, alias Happy Cameron, was named Miss Cinderfella 1981. Runners up were Try-Me Guy and Henrietta Hickey. After school get-togethers and Parton's Pizza were familiar to many of the devoted staffers. Lots of time and effort was called for to meet the deadlines. Nearing the final deadline in February, everything had to be completed, It was a hectic time for all, especially for the editor-in-chief, Kehley Howeth, who spent many hours just getting organized. Weatherford was the team to beat. This win or loss would mean the difference in second in district and the zone playoffs. However, this game was fatal for the Bears. The 17-O loss was not easy to swallow but Coach Davis was very satisfied with the outcome and proud of his team-win, lose or draw. After coming this far the team could not let Azle get the best of them, so to end up the season the Bears racked up a 10-0 victory. When talking to Coach Davis about the season, he was quoted as saying he had the Best Staff in America and that they deserved all the credit. On November 18 the coaching staff met to vote on the All-District players from district 4A-5. Selected were Seniors Mike Howard, Darin Ingram, Guy Wirsing, and Juniors Joey Howeth, jamie Nobles, Jesse Blair, and lay Suratt. They, by showing their skill, leadership, and enthusiasm were very deserving of the award. And so another tradition was broken with a complete turn around for the Bears, going from the last rank to the second in district. Coach Davis and his staff expect an even better season next year. l i 'Y CTU -all Si -a ,aa- -5, isa sci ' liatk row-Stan Walker, Arthur Brunson, Phil Miller, Greg Morris, Lewis Turbeyille, Robert Mitchell, jamie Nobles, Mike Howard, Rex Grimes, Tim Nash, lerry Longino, Tim Cooke, Second row-Mark Strobel, Vince McCall, Shawn Tallant, lesse Blair, Chris Covington, Tony Osborne, Guy Wirsing, Rick Plock, Dink Thomas, lames White, First row-Larry McDaniel, lay Suratt, Darin Ingram, Happy Cameron, joey Howeth, Mike Sholars, Gary Fields, Clete Welch, lohn Hibbs, loe McNeely, Bre er Bears l-la e Best Season in 12 Years L 5' wr-1 'T' Q xv! l , , , 5 if ' l r' . rl ad., 9'-f 1 , Z fgb , it L N 1 A. Because of their lack of experience, the 1980-81 season proved disappointing for the Varsity Boys. The fact that there were no returning starters from previous years, along with the transition to a new coach, hampered the effectiveness of the bears this season. Nevertheless, the boys had fun this year and hope for better seasons in the future. Kelly LeBlanc, Eddie Crawford, and Matthew Stringer were the forwards, Chris Covington, Tony Pelaez and David Keplinger were the guards, and Robert Mitchell, Bill Edwards, and Philip Stringer played the Post. Philip Kezerle and Andrea McNeely were the managers and Coach Curry, normally the Girls Varsity coach, also coached the boys this year. Since they had finished second, they were excited and ready to go for the second round of play. The girls easily beat Northside and then met a tough team from Boswell. lt was a hard-fought game, but the girls played as a team and when the buzzer went off, they had come out ahead. The next game was against Castle-berry, who gave the girls a good game. But again the Brewer girls pulled through. Then came the most important game of the season. The girls had to travel over to Weatherford to play the Roos. There was a terrific crowd of students, parents and Bear fans to cheer the girls on. About halfway through the first quarter, Melanie Saunders fell, sprained her ankle, and was out for the rest of the game. The girls knew they needed to work harder then ever to beat the Roos. The Brewer girls played tough and came back to within nine points of winning the game. We should be proud of their effort and determination. The last game of the season was played against the Azle Hornets. The Brewer girls led the Hornets during the first and most of the second quarter. They were neck and neck until the fourth quarter, when Azle began to pull ahead. The girls played with determination, but nevertheless came up short. A big Thank You is due our 1980-81 seniors for all the time and energy put forth, both locally and statewide, to insure Brewer Highfs standards of excellence. Your dedication hasn't gone unnoticed or unappreciated. My congratulations to the Seniors and Bear Tracks staff. School Board 0 181 Bear Tracks Dedication: Mr. Ron Miller Mr. Ron Miller, known to Brewer students as Coach Miller, gave up his position as basketball coach during the past year to become a full-time counselor. He is llenioying counseling very much, since the thing he likes most is working with students. He admits, however, that he hates to put grades on permanent records, and so welcomes interruptions at any time during the day. Although Coach Miller is not superstitious, he worries about this thirteenth year being his last at Brewer High. ln retrospect, he says that l'my thirteenth year has undoubtedly been the least exciting of all, since l had to give up something I truly loved. To express the appreciation ofthe student body and the annual staff for many years of hard work, the 1981 Bear Tracks is dedicated to Mr. Ron Miller.
