Once again balloons, paper, streamers, and posters i filled the halls and classrooms as another Homecom- - ing week began. Along with the excitement, several, decorating contests were held. The biggest of theml was the hall decorating contest won by the Junior Class and the door decorating contest, won by the F cosmotology classes. l Teachers and students were busy welcoming exes and preparing for Friday's activities. The decorated gym was filled with sighs predicting victory over the ' Boswell Pioneers. The spirit rally began as the exes were reminded about their high school years and! students anxiously waited for the naming of the 1979 l' Homecoming Queen, Jeanna Summerhill. M The game began after the traditional blue and: white balloons filled the air. Halftime was highlighted as Gloria White Gabbert was announced' as the Coming Home Queen. , People went out after the game and celebrated though it ended on an unhappy note as the Bearsl were defeated by Boswell 12-7. V Q49 Homecoming 7 8 Opening Peop1e's minds People's minds were so intensely set on the band hall and parking problems that few noticed the changes in the ordinary run- of-the-mill lunch room. New chairs had been ordered along with the tables and booths. There had also been an addition to the menu. At the SALAD BAR, you could purchase almost any type of salad or fruit for 50 cents. Then after the opening the prices changed to 10 cents an ounce. To enhance the lunchroom as well as the rest of the school, blinds were added. These were the final touches in the reconstruction of B. H. S., with one exception. If indeed you could call it an exception. Opening 9 No Parking Here. AN YTIME!! Will I find a parking place today? That was the question that entered the minds of students and teachers as they were confronted by the parking problems for which they were unprepared. Due to the construction of the new band hall, the parking lot by McKinney Auditorium was made useless. The destruction of the parking lot had not been a part of the remodeling plansg therefore no arrangements had been made for the students who usually parked in that area. Many students, who had in the past used this area, attempted to park in other lots, but they found that all other lots were full. A new drive for the faculty parking lot was put in. This helped cut a portion of the overflow. It also put an end to anonymous notes left on cars informing faculty members they were illegally parked. Those notes were meant as a joke but it was not funny to those students who were forced to park illegally in fire zones and in front of the football stadium. Even as late as the end of October there was still no set date for the completition of the auditorium and parking lot. This left the students asking, Will I find a parking place today? 45 ll ll . This was done to lessen the load on the other vice principal. Mr. Krivanek was now the principal and Mr. Busse and Mr. Clay, were hired by the W. S. I. S. D. as the new vice principals. The students accepted the change and the school year went on. 1. Mike James studying in Photography class. 2. Cyndi Gibson, Vera DeLeon, and Lisa Woods cheering the Bears on. 3. IQ YQXNV: if Q., Opening 13 Socks, Keys, To boost the moral of students as they went through their daily hum- drum routine, special activities were added to the schedule Key to Victory,', Sockit to 'Em, and Swat, were just some of the many slogans used to pep up students. People were asked to wear such things as crazy socks, keys, fly swatters, and black arm bands to back the Bears. There were also special things like hall Swatters, Boost decorating contest, dress the bear contest, and all types of spirit contests. One, a spirit chain where each class was to buy small links to represent spirit, was won by the Junior Class. Another was a funeral for a Keller Indian. The lack of spirit was, at times, unbelievably great, and yet at times, the school overflowed with excitement. As the days passed the spirit, or lack of it, became a great controversy Sick Spirit among students, faculty, and adminis- tration. What could be done to restore school spirit to its normal high? Would it ever be the same? It was up to the students. Finally the students began to realize that it wasn't the quanity of the spirit but the quality. As the sign said in the hall, It's not always the team with the most points that are the winners. 14 Opening Spirit Splrit Opening Seniors Welcome 80's fi. 2 16 Opening 1. With this chool year comes the end of a decade nfamous for such things as Watergate, he fall of the South, Viet Nam to the ommunist, a shocking rise in interna- ional terrorism, and rapid inflation purred on by outlandish increases in he national debt. But the decade also ad its good points. For the first time 1 20 years Americans are not at war, mall pox has been radificated from the forld, microelectricity has been invent- d, and there has been great advances 1 scientific and medical fields. Just as here were good Sz bad things happen- ig in the world, Brewer High School as had its ups and downs. The school year began with a positive ttitude. With the remodeling of the :hool and with the new equipment iroughout the school, there seemed to e a greater sense of pride and school pirit. The clubs and organizations did ot let this opportunity for greater student involvement pass unnoticed. The National Honor Society Members were busy being secret pals to the Varsity Football players. They also teamed up with Santa Claus and held a Christmas party for the under- privileged children in White Sett- lement. To start new members on an active foot, N.H.S. held a secret pal week for teachers sponsored by the new members. The OEA Office Education Association also sponsored the first Olympics to help special children, and participated in the food drive for needy families. One way OEA members work toward their goal of becoming tomor- rows business leaders is by participating in community activities today. The Drama Club has' participated in a number of tournaments in which they scored very highly. At the Eastern Hills High School Mikie Stanfeild and Kenneth Spelce received a lst place in a duet, Glen Lane received a 3rd place 20 Activities in Oratory, and the team placed second in group improvisation with Nickie Stanfeild, Kenneth Spelce, Cathy Boyett and Cindy Weaver. In the tournament at Southwest Mickie Stan- field and Kenneth Spelce received a first place in group improvisation with Hecter Carrea, Debbie Lemmey, Cathy Boyett, a second place in group improvisation with Josh Hart, Mickie Stanfeild, Kenneth Spelce. The Drama group have also presented two plays, Prisoner of Second Avenue by Neil Simon, and Antigone by Sophocles. The Woods and Water club have also been busy planning campouts for their 1. Members of HERO, Marlene Giles, Lisa Crawford and Mary Kelly took Christmas Cards to rest homes 2. Gayle Lebby participates in the Student Council Rock A Thon, for Muscular Dystrophe. 3. Miss Ponder and her Teddy Bear. 4. The whiz kid team-Monty Shaw, Melinda Evans, Tim Matheny, Carol Morris if ilk 5 'W'-1. my vities t fi K.. We -'U largest membership ever. Campouts for the Spring Semester were highlighted by a two day canoe trip on the Brazos river. The Woods and Water club also elected officers they were: Phil Sawyer- President, Tim Byers-Vice President, and Vicki Blair-Secretary and Trea- surer. The club sponsors were Karen Fry and Coach Roger Benefeild. The club was sponsored by the Long Horn Council of Boy Scouts under the direction of Mr. Paul Uitanza. The Cosmetology Dept. has been busy throughout the year learning all there is to know about neat and accurate hair styles. The Second year students went to Austin to get their Beautification License. The Junior Girls went as models to give them experience for when it's time for them to take the test. DECA-Distributive Education Club of America has par- 22 Activities ticipated in numerous community and leadership projects during the year. In October, three DECA officers par- ticipated in the officer leadership lab at Concan. While November found DECA members participating in the Student Council food drive for needy families. November also marked the beginning of candy sales in the D.E. School Store. The B.H.S. DECA members also raised 3251.00 in the Muscular Dystrophy Bowl-a-thon where Brewer ranked third in Tarrant County high schools in total money collected for MDA. January and February were the months of prepara- tion for the Area 5 Career Development Conference which was held in Temple on February 22-23. HERO is an organization for Home Economics Cooperative Education students learning Vocational Skills in home economics related occupations. 1 ,i 0 GIVE THAN ,1- '34mm.. r .' Members have the opportunity to develop leadership by practicing par- liamentary procedure, planning meet- ings, sponsoring needy families in the community and working in fund raising activities. Students gain self-confidence and develop Social signs necessary for the world of work and life in general. The Building Trades class built their house at 8321 Hanon St. this year. The house is a three bedroom, 2 bath, brick with attached double garage. It is an energy efficient home, total electric, with high-efficient heating and cooling. The students work a full year building the house. OEA-Office Education Association worked hard to become tomorrows business leaders typing, filing, learning to use calculators, duplicating and what seems like hundred of other machines just to become a good office worker. They also sponsored the first Special Olympics ever to help Special children. They visited children in the hospital on Halloween, took up food for needy families, and as always did very well in their various competitions. Activities 23 24 Activities uuf N. Cf Q23 'g.',',. The Bears unvieled their act at Weatherford against the Kangaroos. The Bears opened the scoring with a 68 yard punt return by Mike Markum. After trading touchdowns, the Roos broke the game open in the second quarter and the Bears were unable to catch up, dropping their opener 42-21. The next week at home against the Lancaster Tigers, the Bears played tough and held the lead throughout most of the game. However, with time running out the tigers scored on a 23 yard pass that broke the hearts of the fans, as the Bears lost a close one, 20-15. The following week the Bears enter- tained highly ranked Crowley. But the result wasn't very entertaining for the Eagles. Keith Eichman broke two long runs for touchdowns, and the Bears pulled off a big upset, winning 15-0. The Bears opened district play against Boswell in the annual Homecoming game. It was a closely fought defensive game played deep in the Pioneer's territory. But the Bears were unable to capitalize on Boswell turnovers and lost 12-7. Friday N ight's Heroes Ki S55 7, , Me.. The physical changes one makes in the four years of high school are often quite startling and drastic. Remember when Monty's hair was straight? or when Ted parted his on the side. The appearance of students change as quickly as fads, but there are deeper, more significant changes that have been made. High School years are an opportunity to grow emotionally and intellectually. They provide a chance to not only add to ones knowledge but also to develope insight and judgment. Though their High School years are over, there will always be new things to learn, decisions to make for the seniors pf 13980. We wish them the best of uc . 1'- ng. QV T ,,4.TQ.-afd, x Q Y, . While look- ing to the future remains important, we must occassionally simply put things into perspective and congratulate ourselves on those goals which we have already accomplished. Here is my list of commendations for 1980. First, congratulations are in order to this year's senior class members. You Superintendent Dr. Nelson Eichrnan have worked for 12 years in securing the knowledge and maturity represented by your high school diploma. You have given of your time not only for academics, but also in support of inumerable civic and social causes. Events ranging from fund drives for Muscular Dystrophy to Friday night football games have provided services and entertainment for the people of White Settlement. It can truly be said that the community has benefitted from your actions. You should be proud to be a part of the class of ,80. Along with the seniors, the parents of our students deserve praise for provid- ing the physical necessitieies and the encouragement that are vital during one's school years, There are many sacrifices parents must make in raising their children, but none more important than those contributing to the enrich- ment of your children's lives. The faculty and administration of our school system have been a very positive influence in the development of our youth. I feel the WSISD is rapidly becoming one of the finest systems in the state because of the dedication and overall excellence of its staff. Education involves more than learning the ABC's and other fundamentals, and we are determined to provide for all the needs of our students. Finally, the community itself should be commended for its support of our schools. It has provided input, re- sources, and facilities for our students. Without community support, the goal of superior education would be impossi- ble to attain. I believe that we, the students, parents, educators and people of the WSISD, have done a good job working together for excellence in education, and am confident that this condition will remain characteristic of our school district. Mike and Donna Mastandrea devote their lives to helping Brewer students better themselves. Starting at 7:00 in the morning, for the past five years, Mrs. Mastandrea has taught twirling and drill team. She then leaves for the Middle School where she is Librarian. Equally devoted is Mr. Mastan- drea. After helping work with the drill team, he starts his routine of teaching Algebra, Trig., Comprehen- sive Logic, and coaching the tennis team. He has also taught Sociology, Criminology and Geometry. Mr. and Mrs. Mastandrea both attended the University of Florida, where Mr. Mastandrea was an All American cheerleader, and Mrs. Mastandrea was a National Cham- pion Feature twirler. We, the Annual Staff, dedicate this year's Annual to the Mastandreas for their care, love, and devotion to the students at Brewer. Hwff Qvv--swf? 1 .f 2 .iw sei 1?-Q if , if? qi , W 4 - ' sm. I would rank it right up there with taking out the garbage and going to the dentist. I'd like to compliment the staff and Mr. Cullers for their dedication throughout the year, I would also like to thank them for working on the annual. Some of the improvements and features to look for are: the embossed cover fthe first embossed cover since 19701, increased color pages and expanded activities pages.
