Silver nniversary Now that Brewer High School is in its 25th year, we as an annual staff have decided to take you back through the years and touch on some of the things that have contributed to the character and pride of Brewer. ln 1952, when the doors first opened to students, many new plans and hopes were launched. Continuously through athletics, curriculum, and activities, Brewer has striven for the highest. Even though the first Senior graduating class numbered only twelve, compared to over one hundred and fifty today, all have contributed in some way to bettering Brewer and paving easier paths for the next classes. ln 1955, when the school was only three complete years old, another bond program was passed which, because of increased enrollment, provided for extra class rooms and the erection of Bear Stadium. As the school and enrollment continued to grow and expand, America itself was growing in size and power. When the fifties ended, many new technological and cultural feats were established-television, space travel and Rock and Roll. But now all these things are familiar for Brewer students on its Silver Anniversary . . . Vera Deleon 2 - 0 pen ing C'mon julie! Brewer kept up with its high ideals and better teaching in the sixties by providing students with more activities and an even higher level of education. The students of the late fifties were soon launched into the space age of thc sixties. ln 1963 the tenth Senior Class gave as a school gift, the stone hear located in the stadium. The mascot still stands today, though slightly disfigured, as proof of the endurance and strength of Brewer High School. ln that same year, as the U.S. became involved in the Vietnam War, many students felt a strong patriotic responsibility to their country. Later however, as this patriotism turned into frustration and violence across the country, Brewer studcn ts were reminded of their loyalty always to the school. The war ended with a sigh of relief, but the problems continued as Brewer shouldered its way into the seventies. As in the sixties, the seventies were sometimes turbulent and filled with controversy. America had its Watergate and Equal Right's Movement, but sometimes right at Brewer things were simmering. One of the most controversial happenings, the symbol of how WE were and how we felt, the annual of 1973 reflected the way America and Brewer were changing. When the Senior Trip was discarded, that added yet another issue of hot debate for the students Qmainly Seniorsj of Brewer. A- long with the controversial and some- times unpleasant happenings, there were also many good things to happen. The band traveled to Mexico, the Bears obtained a new coaching staff, and last but not least the remolding of the school. As this annual is being put together the construction goes on for a new Brewer to fit the needs of the community as it always has. Now enjoy and remember while looking at this annual and think about the changes and events that will inevitably occur as Brewer moves toward its 50th Anniversary . . . Opening-11 The Anniversary Celebration 12 -Homecoming Paintstreamerspaperglittcrballoons and GRAPIYVINES entwined throughout Homecoming Week for the greatest ex- plosion of Spiritmania 777. Pro- minately decorated doors and weighed down walls of silent signs proclaimed perpetual victory by swinging past, breaking. and locking up miseonstrued milicious Mustangs . . . As the last moment dc- Lails were being put up, the school burst i11to a Beardom of mass anxi- eties. The Cominghome spirit rally began with reminiscing exes and lively students intensely awaiting the announcement of the 1977 Homecoming Queen-Melody Ware. The uneasiness and formalities faded away as vigor and enthusiasm replaced it for the anticipation of the GAME. Even though the Bears experienced the Mustarig-blues, the Homecoming continued on in its quest for remembrance. Though it was not to be found in Black Diamonds, the students, satisfiably for the hard-working few, definitely made Homecoming 777 one of the best things that ever came home. Awaiting the big moment UP. Up, and Away? Sophomore sign. Cheerleader Sign. A mini parad 1: 3 'VOHQWNG Homecoming Day. wfake me, lim yours. -Scott DeShong Melody Ware-Homecoming Queen Homecoming-13 The Wa We Were ln 1952, when Brewer opened, the titles of the halls reflected the hobby socks, ducktails, and white T-shirts of that era. When teeny hoppers first gained popularity with their rolled up jeans, greased down hair, and souped up Chevys no one guessed the impact they would have on things to come. The 'Tabulous '507s,, soon turned into the turbulent 60's with the introduction of mini-skirts, Woodstock, and hippies . These controversial and often startling, ideas pushed us into the sophisticated '70,s. This disco-oriented set of young adults changed the outlook of teenagers. Even now, though the tiles are dulled, we have our own reflections. Because of this we,ve decided to capture the style of our youthful days for you to go back and look at how things USED to be. 141-Styles Remember the good ol' days? 4'But grandma what big feet you have What next'?fBob Morrison, Jody Ja ck The look of today'?sJimmy Daffada f-,,Q ,Q ,Y,,,, 7 and I promise I won't do it again. -Penny Eyster Styles-15 CLUBS I pull up to the school with my eyes still half shut. It seemed as the first night jitters prevailed, the Bears went down lighting 6-26. They met Crowly at Bear stadium and were the first to be put under the Bear Claw 35-12. The Bears and the spirit traveled to Keller in hopes of bringing home victory number 2. But the hopes fell as the score board read O-28. 44 0 Varsity Football The Bears on the road again traveled to Diamond Hill and were again defeated 14-22. But the spirit couldn't be dampened as preparations for homecoming began. With the halls decorated the Bears met Grapevine and were ready to give them a good fight, but once more they were defeated 14-27. As zone play started the Bear Spirit was better than ever. They traveled to Northside ready to put the Big BEAR Bite on the Steers, the dust cleared and the score board read Bears 35, Northside 18. The Bears chalked up victory number 2 and preparations for the game against Boswell began. Although the Bears tried hard, Boswell came out ahead 7-21. As a large crowd tumed out to see the Bears SURPRISINGLY stomp azle 21-7. The Bears had brought home victory number 3. They then met Castleberry at Bear Stadium and the long time rivals were next in line to be put under the every powerful Bear Claw 40-28. As the last game of the season rolled around the spirit could not be put down. They trompled over Everman 38-0. And the Bear season ended with a 5 and 5 record and a second place District Title. pop tests, assigning work - all in a teacher's day. They, then as now, scan the halls holding down their territory. In '52 when thirty teachers were hired to leam the students the three R's, they helped the students in any way they could, as the over 50 teachers do today in courses ranging from cosmetology to sociology. As B.H.S. continually attempts to expose its stu- dents to the newest and most modemized courses and facilities, its stall' has also given way to more specialized teaching techniques. As new and differ- ent people arrive, changes begin, such as the library addition and new science labs. Brewer's outward appearance may change - students and faculty will corne and go - but amidst all this reform' the teach- ers will be close at hand to lend support and keep our minds on the upward trend. 155 Coach Auten . . . One of the most important of these areas, to us, are the patrons of the annual. Without these patrons, Brewer would be unable to have an annual or either the prices would be too high to ensure availability to everyone. Many of our patrons are traditional, lending their support throughout the years, while others are new businesses or just realizing the benefits of our advertising. We would like to thank all of our patrons throughout the years and would like to remind all Brewer students to keep these people and their businesses in mind while shopping. Now a new elementary school, new science labs, gym floor and library are all complete. While these improvements may not benefit the Senior Class of 1978 they will be an asset to future students. For the first time in many years term themes will be made a little easier and bones will jarr a little less on the floors. Finally it will be warm in the winter and cool in the summer instead of vise-versa. Eye strain is lessened and the looks of the school are greatly improved. Educational opportunities will soon be advanced beyond their present point of existence. On Brewer's golden anniversary we will once more look back but the effect of the improvements will be unrecognizable, as it is now to the class of '53. While our memories of Brewer will exist in the present, the school will grow and exist for the future. Every class has a different image of Brewer. Different classes and building structures - steady yet flexible, changing but not changing, C. F. Brewer High School will always strive for individuality and the next '25 years. August Laughter and chatter filled Brewer High School, we returned, eager to renew old friendships and reluctant to explore new textbooks. Football practice started, shaping up the hopeful Bears to a level of competition. The Student Council sponsored the Howdy Dance to welcome the new as well as old students back to the chore of learning. The Band picked up the beat for another year of early morning music, while the Drill team, flag corps, and majorettes started their resplendent routines. We returned expecting air-conditioned comfort but instead got into the middle of remodeling. As we were basked in the August heat, we looked forward to the cool autumn just ahead . . . 190 0 August 0 August oAugust 0 August 0 August 0 August 0 August 0 August 0 August 0 August 0 August 0 August 0 August 0 August 0 August 0 August 0 Augl may . . . September found us in the school with the insulation bare and the pipes gleaming in full view. The lirst few hints of fall air peeked around the corner to warn us of what was to come. Football was not at its best, the Bears winning only one in live games. The spirit remained high, as Homecoming loomed near. Shopping sprees, trips to the florist and decorating, made up a large portion of the week. The big day finally arrived - halls decorated to welcome exes. The homecoming queen was crowned and anticipation of the homecoming dance put a festive end to an exciting week. September also saw the Whiz Kids debut as students held practice matches against each other and faculty members. Since Brewer became a high school in 1952, a feeling of dedication and commitment has always been the driving force characteristic of teachers and administrators alike. Now, twenty-five years later, that same educational philosophy prevails. Our high school is steadily earning the respect it deserves in academics, extra-curriculars, and athletics in the Fort Worth community and the state of Texas! Throughout the history of BHS, five superin- tendents have contributed to its progress and development in their own special way. During my administration which began some seven years ago, I, along with the community and school board, made a pledge to upgrade the physical and academic standards of our high school in order to achieve excellence in education. Now, during the l977-78 school year, several im- provements have become a reality. A new library and science facility, an expanded cafeteria, a renovated gymnasium, and central air-conditioning represent the necessary changes in the physical structure. Currently, administrators are busily engaged in curriculum revision. To begin our next 25 years, Brewer will boast strong vocational programs, a solid core of basic and fundamental classes, a college preparatory curriculum, and a new program designed to accommodate the academically 'ggifted and talentedw student. What has necessitated all of these changes in recent years? The answer to this question is quite simple: You the students of Brewer High School. Today, our students are more technically skilled, more academ- ically talented, and more aware of the de- mands and realities of their world en- vironment than ever before! A greater percentage of graduates have expressed both the need and desire to attend college and it is the obligation of the educational structure of Brewer High School to properly prepare them for this endeavor. Certainly, at this stage, all of our edu- cational goals have not been fully at- tained. In many respects, we have only just begun! However, the Mvisionsn of this community and school administration 198 ' Dr. Eichman's Message are quickly becoming a reality. It is my hope that when students, fac- ulty members, and parents reflect upon the twenty-fifth anniversary of Brewer High School, they will do so with intense pride in what has been accomplished and with great anticipation of what is cer- tainly to bel School Board Right to left-Mr. Willie Ballard, Mr. Lin Libby, Ms. Juanita Scott, Mr. Eddie Morris, Dr. Nelson Eichman, lVlr. All four species were placed on a missile and shipped to Earth. Here they mingled, intermarried, and grew culturally. Many of the students and some of their parents have had Mrs. Burton as a teacher and have been amazed at her teaching abilities. From her first day to now, more than 20 years she has taught the basics of one ofthe basics-Home Economics. This outstanding person is and has always been one of the kindest and most loving persons that Brewer has been lucky enough to have and to know.
