Our first case: The 'Prosecution vs. the co-defendants of America, White Settlement, and Brewer High School. Prosecution, will you present your opening statement? Prosecution: I will prove that the co-defendants of America, White Settlement, and Brewer High School are guilty of un- necessary CHANGE that has drastically affected both them, and their people. I also intend to prove that the CHANGES they demand today are unnecessary. I conclude my opening statement. judge: Defense, will you present your opening statement? Defense: I will prove that the co-defendants are completely innocent of the charges brought against them. I will not at- tempt to deny the CHANGES the co-defendants have expe- rienced and I will not deny the fact that they continue to de- mand CHANGE, but I will prove that the CHANGES were necessary then, and are necessary today. I conclude my opening statement. judge: Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, you have heard the opening remarks of both the Prosecution and Defense. Be- fore Prosecution presents his evidence, I advise you: Listen carefully to the evidence given. The fate of the three defen- dants lies in your hands. Prosecution, you may state your case. Prosecution: My first point of evidence occurred 200 years ago when your people, America, fought for the cause of freedom. As the result, a revolution of CHANGE swept the country and ravaged us to the present-1976. During this time, technology produced never-dreamed-of inventions and vehicles that allowed men to construct . . . and destroy. Consequently, the face of your land became disfigured with the scars of PROGRESS. Along with the physical destruction of your land and wil- derness, your people's morals were also destroyed. All re- spect for standards was forgotten amid the noisy construc- tion of CHANGE, and your people substituted decency for development. With the conclusion of this evidence, I again state that CHANGE was not only unnecessary, but devastating. , x 675' l rtliw J' at lb bil? 1 ..'. . iegiiu 'l' ' A 414 tJf.+ 'X 1' +1 ++f'Hf iialaii '31 llrlliivliiul l-SPSS' 1- Nev' W Xi 'P+ S-'i'i,i g -S-. In this year, you were established, White Settlement. Only four families lived in your first settlement, but soon PROGRESS and CHANGE started the wheels turning for development. You evolved from the legendary cowtown of hangings, Indian raids, saloons, and shoot-outs, to, as your citizens proclaim, a dynamic city on the crossroads of PROGRESS. ln this transformation, you became a center of industry and aeronautics. With the threat of war involvement shadowing our country in the early 40's, and the concern of the government to expand our nation's defense, you and the area around you, became the site chosen for the construction of an extensive aircraft plant and an Army-Air Force training base. The construction of those facilities, and the need for employees, launched you into the infinity of PROGRESS. People heard of the great opportunity for employ- ment in White Settlement and began coming by the thousands. With this CHANGE, the charm and excitement of a past era was totally annihilated and, was replaced by the cold, hard reality of modernization. Your people no longer reflected your historic yesterday, but anxiously anticipated the future. I ask you, Was this CHANGE necessary? Absolutely not! .. 1 . We lust Want C A C-E. My third point of evidence is now occuring in your faculty and student body, Brewer High School. Your people want CHANCE. They will no longer conform to what N formerly has been accepted, but are constantly searching for ways to CHANGE things, make things different. Years ago, your students never questioned administrative decisions, but now they request the reasoning behind the decisions. The students of Brewer High School, through their sf speech, habits, and even style of dress, themselves are live examples of CHANG E. They now freely express their opinions on national politics, controversial topics, and morality. Your students illustrate the New Generation which has been maturing in America for years. This CHANGE is unnecessary! The trouble with the world today is that people are constantly trying to CHANGE things. The young people, just like your students, Brewer High School, are the main liberals. If they would only realize that some things aren't meant to be CHANGED, we wouldn't have this constant, rebellious demand for CHANCE. Consequently, a more peaceful atmosphere would exist without CHANG E. With the conclusion of this transcript evidence, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, l now present the highlight of my evidence. With the permission of the court, I can offer living proof of my evidence the students of Brewer High School, today. For a period of one year, the students of Brewer High School, and the activities in which they involve themselves will be on trial. l, as the Prosecution, know no better way of proving my points than to use the actual subjects of controversy. Your Honor, justice awaits your decision. Will Prosecution be allowed to proceed? ludge: ln consideration of the importance and necessity of actual proof in this trial, I will agree to these terms. However, the co-defendants of America, White Settlement, and Brewer High School will have their presentation of defense. Prosecution, you may proceed . . . Opening: Brewer High School 11 I Stand Up! Get With lt! Prosecution: My next point of evidence-pep rallies. I suppose that you, Brewer, want them CHANGED? Brewer: Yes, I think our pep rallies can be greatly improved upon. Prosecution: In what way? Brewer: Mainly in the way of student involvement-or Spirit. On the whole, most of our pep rallies are very spirited, but there are times when the students themselves could get more involved. PI'0SeCUti0n1 What do you mean by this? Aren't the pep ral- lies mainly conducted by the students? Brewer: Yes, they are. The cheerleaders, band, drill team, and various organizations all have a big part in the pep ral- lies. It's some of the students who are not involved in these organizations to whom l'm referring. These students are the ones who remain seated during cheers, or don't even come to the pep rallies at all. I believe that if these students would CHANGE their atti- tudes, the whole atmosphere of the pep rallies would CHANGE, also. l have nothing further to say E Pep Rallies - 15 I 1 1 1. W5 'E' X . Qi ,. CHANGE in student appearance and involvement Many of them commented on this CHANGE, saying, lt was so DIFFERENT when we went to Bre- wer. I can't believe how much things havei CHANGED. Brewer: Your conception of the Homecoming Pep Rally is totally ridiculous! Of course my exes notice CHANGE I have CHANGED. When they return, they see a difference in my stu- dents and their activities. This is only because my students and their activities are now different in cer- tain ways. You stated that my exes no longer feel like they belong. You are absolutely right. They realize that things have CHANGED since they were students. You may ask, Then what is the Homecoming Pep Rally for? The answer lies within the exes them- selves. The Homecoming is a time to remember how things were . . . and realize how much they've CHANGED. 18 - Homecoming Pep Rally 15-ft R .t we -. L, . -I-Q I 13 72 ,. 1 . Mg? D, :Q :vhs .2fv. Would you please tell the court exactly what went on at 'the dance? Student: Well, most of the students there either sat talk- ing, or danced, of course. Prosecution: Would you tell the court what kind of danc- ing the students did? Student: Oh, the usual slow-dancing and the bump and Prosecution: Excuse me, but could you repeat that last phrase? I'm not quite sure I understood you. Student: I said the students did the bump. Prosecution: And what exactly is the bump? Brewer: The bump is a dance in which the couples bump each other in rhythm to the music. Prosecution: Why, that's outrageous, Brewer! l've never heard of anything like that in my life! ls this the kind of behavior your CHANGE has caused? Brewer: The kind of dancing my students do is no more outrageous than the dancing of, for example, the '50's. If they seem outrageous, then I ask you to remember the Twist, Iitterbug, and Bunny Hop. These dances and the dances of today are products of nothing more than a society of CHANGING fads. 3. Would you please tell the court in your own words what your feelings are about Homecoming? Ex: When I came back for Homecoming, I felt as if I really didn't belong. Sitting in the stands at the game, I began to recall my years at Brewer. Memories of the way my friends and I were made me realize, somewhat sadly, how much things have CHANGED. As I watched the game and halftime performance, I concluded that I really am no longer a part of Brewer's life . . . I can only return and remember. Prosecution: On hearing your ex's testimony, Brewer, I have come to the conclusion that your CHANGE is evi- dently wrong. Your ex stated that he no longer felt a part of you. I ask you, Is your CHANGE worth the effect it has on your exes? Brewer: As my ex stated, he realizes that he can no longer truly be a part of me again, for I have CHANGED. How- ever, in this realization, my ex has also revealed Ihe,true. meaning of Homecoming as being a time to return and remember. If my exes truly do realize the meaning of Home- coming, then in answer to your question, Yes, my CHANCE is worth it. 20 - Homecoming Night an W5.:kfNi55P To Return and Remember Homec STUDENTS - , N . .:f1m1fesm.:.mfrsfrexgqrv Q I - wwf: . ge 2-Mm,,,+?, - A W A . This class is a perfect example of rebellious de- mand for CHANGE among students. This class not only makes unreasonable and unnecessary demands for CHANGE, but influences underclassmen to likewise rebel. judge: Do you deny this accusation? Senior: Certainly! He is unfair and incorrect to say we de- mand unnecessary CHANGE. We feel it our duty to see CHANGE brought about. Prosecution: What need at Brewer calls for CHANGE? Senior: Not only are material needs essential for Brewer, but we also feel a closer relationship between students and ad- ministration can exist if CHANGES are made in attitudes of both. We are willing to do our part to better the relationships. Prosecution: Will you explain to the court your feelings con- cerning the senior trip? ludge: Prosecution, l object to this line of questioning. Re- move it from the records. Prosecution: Very well, will you tell the court why the Se- niors have taken it on themselves to CHANGE student-ad- ministration relationships? I mean, why have you bothered? Senior: As stated before, it is our responsibility to see CHANGE brought about, or at least attempted. Although CHANGE may cause disruption in our tranquil student life, we think apathy is worse than desire for CHANGE. Right? Senior, Opening 4 25 - ,iii ag. Edna Stab it Ab- bott .. . Seniors-76 - 43 ls. 4 f 1: Q, :F - Workin' t The Carwash Blues Defense: Your Honor, the junior Class Of Brewer High School has demonstrated the enthusiasm that is needed to bring about CHANGE. A representative has been chosen from this class to present reasons for finding this change necessary. Will you come forward and tell the court the reasons your class feels that this change is needed? junior: Being only one class, we realize that we are unable to bring about a great number of changes, although we do see the needs around us. What one class feels is necessary for that class, is not always necessary for other classes. Prosecution: Why does your class feel that what is good for one class is not always good for another class? junior: Because CHANGE is continually needed if progress is go- ing to be made in diminishing negative attitudes that exist in this school. ' Prosecution: And may I ask how the junior Class is changing these negative attitudes? junior: We, the junior Class, are changing these negative atti- tudes by participating in all of the school's activities. CHANGE is needed to bring about positive attitudes. Through this change we can develop new and better attitudes toward edu- cation itself. Prosecution: No one can deny that positive attitudes are needed in school, but why is CHANGE so necessary to bring this about? junior: Because change always brings about something new, something different. Defense: Your Honor, the testimony of this junior representa- tive clearly states that CHANGE is necessary to increase school spirit and participation. Without this needed change, the stu- dents of Brewer High School will soon become dormant and indifferent, totally uninvolved. judge: Prosecution, have you anything to add to your case at this time? PROSECUTION: As a result of extensive research on your classes, Brewer, I discovered an astonishing fact. Your sophomore class is breaking a tradition that has stood for years. Instead of following past patterns, they have chosen to CHANGE both in spirit and involvement. To further prove my point I have called to the stand a representative of the sophomore class. Could you tell the court why you have chosen to CHANGE? SOPHOMORE: We, the sophomore class of 1975-76, feel that it is time to CHANGE the tradition ot un- involvement that has prevailed over sophomore classes for years. In the past, classes were consid- ered dormant until their junior and senior years. We believe this is wrong. We don't want to wait un- til then to become active. For this reason, we have broken the tradition of uninvolvement, and have chosen not to lie dormant but to come alive. . Co-defendants: We most certainly do! ludge: Very well, proceed. America: I would like to say that I totally disagree with the charges brought against me! I am innocent! Two hundred years ago when my people fought for free- dom, their actions were justified. If my people hadn't declared independence and brought about CHANCE, I would not be the self-governing nation I am. This CHANGE WAS NECESSARY! As for ad- vancements of technology, I realize my land is not as beautiful as it once was, and is scarred by PROGRESS, but CHANGE has to be made. I am now one of the most prosperous nations in the world. The people in my land live more comfortable than any other nation. I ask you to considerlthe way things were, and the waythey are now. You will see that the CHANCE was not only necessary, but that conditions are definitely better as a result of CHANCE. 208 - Closing Let's Do It Again . . . .Kahne 7 'iv' uv 5 , ,- s' I Q, 39- X, Closing - 209 We 210 - Closing White Settlement: The evidence presented against me is preposterous! I agree I have CHANGED from the earlyifrontier settlement I once was, but how long could I have stayed that way? People cause CHANGE, and when my people came to me searching for a place to live and work, I CHANGED. This CHANGE was necessary! I have not CHANGED as rapidly as I did in my younger years, but things are certainly better as a result of CHANGE! Instead of a lawless, chaotic city, my citi- zens live in peace. All of this has been brought about by CHANGE necessary CHANGE! Brewer: As stated earlier by the other co-defendants, I am not guilty! The Prosecution is correct in accusing my people of wanting CHANGE. My students are constantly seeking ways to CHANGE. They refuse to conform! However, the Prosecution is incorrect in stating my students want unnecessary CHANGE. If my students did not seek and demand CHANGE, everything would remain the same year after year. My students only want CHANGES for the better- ment of me, and they are necessary. Speaking for the Defense, we rest our case. O 4 a 0 I O i1z?5',n,.f, fit? aw-1 5 0 . F, w 1F-raw, 3 A S at We, the Annual Staff, in keeping with the Bi- centennial theme, dedicate the 1975-76 Brewer Bear Tracks to the Spirit of '76 the Bi- centennial Seniors. The Seniors of '76 have be- come a united class through their activities over the past four years. They have been a close-knit class through trials and tribulations they have been forced to accept. They have banned to- gether in protest of unnecessary CHANGE brought upon them. The Seniors have joined to- gether in efforts to carry out CHANGE, some successful, some unsuccessful. For example, time after time, the Seniors attempted to regain the privilege of going on a Senior Trip. However, the requests were continually denied. Even though many obstacles have confronted them, they remained the united class as in the happy times. They will remain the united class of '76 . .. FOREVER! Senior Dedication - 215 Be Thankful For What You Got!! Throughout the course of the year, several students have expressed their personal desire for a Bicentennial Yearbook, chiefly the Seniors. Of course, I realize our reasons for wanting such a book, since we are the ONLY Bicentennial Seniors ever to graduate from Brewer High School. A Bicentennial Yearbook had first entered the staff's mind early in the sum- mer of 1975. After many hours of stars and stripes, and Betsy Rosses, and many fireworks, the Yearbook staff had come to a reasonable conclusion. We agreed to have a Bicentennial Yearbook, yet it would indirectly be related to the Spirit of 76 and still deliver the theme we intended to present. Nevertheless, the difficult part was over, and the staff went to work. We spent the majority of the summer selling ads, and when school began, we had deadlines to meet by preparing photographs, copy, and layouts into an outstanding book. Many annual meetings, late hours, and school activities have been sacrificed to compile the most unique volume of the Bear Tracks ever published at Brewer High School. Therefore, I would like to extend my greatest appreciation to my staff, as they did an outstanding job in performing most of their own assignments in order to produce such a fine edition of this book. Also, many thanks to our es- teemed sponsor, Ron Stubblefield. In closing, I wish to say, along with my staff, if you did not enjoy the contents of this year's annual, TELL IT TO THE IUDGEIII Mr. ED., Glenn Cole f i , Y, 216 The Editors Message 4 O .
