Louisiana Pelican State Delegates Last spring, 11 juniors were selected for their leadership, intelligence, and character to represent Byrd High School at Boys' and Girls' State in August. This program is spon- sored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary, and is held an- nually on the Louisiana State University cam- pus in Baton Rouge. Besides adding new words, such as convocation and muster to their vocabulary, delegates learned the advantages of a democracy by actually becoming a mythical state having its own constitution and laws. The guys and gals suf- fered from lack of sleep, but returned ready to teach the student body new cheers. They also gained new insight into the workings of government at the local, parish, and state level. On the whole, Boys' and Girls' Staters benefitted from their week in Baton Rouge. Boys' Staters were: lames Bowen, Carvin Watson, Martin Stinson, Doug Greve, Trey Howse. 16 Honors 'Tig 1 Delegates were: Mona Hudson, Trelvis Zenter, Beth Ann Arnold, Karen Moore, Mona Miley, Carvin Watson, lames Bowen, Gia Kosmitis, Doug Greve, Trey Howse, Martin Stinson. by ,Q-4' Girls' Staters were: Karen Moore, Gia Kosmitis, Beth Ann Arnold, Trelvis Zenter, Mona Hudson, Mona Miley. Karen Moore, who was a nmner-up in the Century Ill Leaders Scholarship Award 1981-'82, was selected in Who's Who Among American High School Students for 1980-'81 and 1981-'82 and was a recipient of the Optimist Award during Student Appreciation Week. 4? sf, T During the summer, Doug Creve participated in the Iceberg Pro- ject, a study sponsored by the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology: he also won an essay contest put on by the Louisiana Bar Association of Young Lawyers on the subject of the present economic situation of the United States.
