PHYSICAL ARCHFRY Our Physical Education Department is designed to train students of Byrd High School in good sportsmanship, group participation, and teamwork. The enjoyment of the game is taught along with the fundamentals and techniques, thus providing an excellent means of using leisure' hours wisely. The program not only develops physical fitness through engaging in games hut also emphasizes health habits by the study of personal hygiene, social hygiene, and first aid. FIRST AID BASKETBALL

TOMMY J, MANDINA The Byrd High School ROTC Corps under the direction of Captain james C. Metcalf has developed into a very outstanding feature. For the last few years the ROTC group has functioned in good form, but it has become the talk of the school and the town this year. The ROTC has many activities during the school year. Perhaps the main event is the Military Ball held annually near the end of the school year. Byrd and Fair Park both take part in this occasion. The most popular of the ROTC groups is the Military Band. The band grew during this year from twenty-five members to sixty-one members. These boys often entertain the students by playing at the basketball games. Our ROTC is not all play as it seems. The course is carried on with class room work on Military Science and Tactics. This is made very interesting by the latest charts and movies. The rifle team of the Byrd ROTC is known and respected all over the country. The team in the past has been ranked highly in the nation, and has been successful in its matches this year. The Byrd High School ROTC has approximately four hundred members, counting the beautiful sponsors in each company. It is, in our opinion, one of the best ROTC groups in the Fourth Army District.
