While the journalism classes, as reporters, gather and prepare the news, the editorial staff, copy read, proof read, make up the pages and perform all the functions of a bona- fide city daily. Through January, 1951, the reporters had turned out approximately 2,805 inches of news and features. Directing the editorial staff is Miss Betty Lynn Harrel. A hard-working business staff, under Mrs. Mamie Rusheon, secured enough adver- tising inches to make this publication compietely self-supporting. Also a part of the business staff, the members of the circulation department distributed and sold some 1,000 copies every other Friday. The High Life is a member of the Louisiana Press Association, National Scholastic Press Association, Columbia Press Association, and Quill and Scroll. BYRD HIGH BAND In keeping with the noble tradition establishcd by members of the In- strumental department during the last decade, groups this year have made appearances for radio broadcasts, assemblies, weekly military reviews, community activities, Holiday in Dixie, as well as performing elaborate half time shows for football games, including the Annual High School Band Day in the LSU stadium, and preparing for the annual winter and spring concerts. Our department welcomes all students who wish to begin or continue their musical training. Classes are offered for beginners on both band and orchestral instruments, for intermediate students in both band and string sections, in addition to the Military, Marching and Concert bands. This year chamber music groups have formed an integral part of our music activities. Each student has becn a member of one or more ensem- bles, many of which have performed before various school and civic func- tions. Aims of the department are to acquaint the music student with the finest in music literature performed to the best of his ability, to develop a sensitive appreciation and enjoyment of music as an art, to instill in him a sense of self pride and responsibility, all of which contributes to the de- velopment of a better citizen, regardless of the profession he may choose after leaving high school.
