Preparing copy for the High Life are Frances Digiotanni. The Byrd High Life this year received a superior rating at the annual meeting of the Louisi- ana High School Press Association held last December in Natchitoches. The Columbia Scholastic Press Association, of which it is also a member, gave it a first place honor rating. Under the direction of Miss Claris Glick, Editorial Sponsor, the paper has been edited by journalism students who gathered the news and prepared the copy. The Business Staff, under the direction of Mrs. Mamie Rusheon, sold ads to various Shreveport firms to finance the paper. The High Life was published every two weeks and was distributed by members of the Cir- culation Statf. This five column, eight page paper is a member of the Quill and Scroll. Suggestions and criticisms are offered hy Pentt Wong, Catherine McCracken, Betty Nell, Joan Wise, Boh Saldich, Betty Jo Eduards, Bonnie Hadwin, Garland Houck, and Jeatt Sink. Ohsert ing the printing press are Barhara Rohinette, Mary Lou Bain, Beverly Conway, Janet Rhodes, Gail Haywood, Janice Rhodes, Gail Shuller, Marjorie Euhattk, Joyce Brngier, Jatte Copeland, Patsy Gottzales, and Bill Kttauer.

BYRD HIGH BAND Under the leadership of Alvin N. Benner, the Concert, Marching and Military Bands have made appearances for radio broadcasts, assemblies, weekly military reviews, community activities, as well as performing elaborate half time shows for football games and preparing the annual win- ter and spring concerts. The Concert Band of seventy members which forms an integral par: of the student life at Bvrd has attained national recognition as one of the outstanding bands of the South. It has been highly commended for its musicianship, intonation and keen interpretive sense by Dr. William D. Revelli, Mark Hindsley, A. A. Harding, L. Bruce Jones, Lee Hope, Ralph Rush, and George Wilson, adjudicators who are nationally known for their outstanding contributions in the field of music education. In festival participation, they won the superior rating at the last Region VII Festival, and were awarded first place in both marching and concert events at the New Orleans Music Festival. This award included an invitation to represent this section of the country at the Chicagoland Music Festival. Also, this spring the Bvrd Band attended the Highlander Music Festival in Dallas, where it was heard by William D. Revelli, adjudicator. Performing the finest in band music literature, the Instrumental Department boasts not onlv a fine music library, but also an ever increasing record library, including the best in recorded classical music. FLUTES—Phyrne Collie, Jonnard Bjorklund, Sue Laws, Madelyn Stephenson, Louis Coppage, Betty Durham and Ella Chandler. OBOE — Jimmie Huddleston and Bobby Smith. BASSOON—Marvin Huffman and Myrl Bjorklund. CLARINETS — Billy Ralph Gay, Jimmie Evanoff, JoAnn Willis, Dorothy Marie Earp, Billie Mc- Clure, J anice Rich, Carole Young, Odell Roshton, Patsy Boggs, Nel- wyn Reynolds, Elaine Vickrey, and Marjorie Rachal.
