MARGARET WHYTE Editorial Sponsor The i947 Gusher has arrived with its colorful, lively, and youthful theme portraying the many activities and studies carried on by you in high school. Endeavoring to produce an annual which would represent the joyous feeling of post War days, the members of the staff have con- cluded a year's Work with this book. The 1947 staff sincerely hope that they have given you an edition which will long retain fond memories of your life and your friends at Byrd. Artists Adelaide Ridgeway, Eleanor Rawls, Sheila Bosworth, and Ruth Ann Barnette receive advice on the division page drawings from Miss Betty Lawrence. Elizabeth Scott, who drew the class illustrations and the circus parade, is shown in the inset. Page Ninety GUSHER STAFF Iudy Daniels, Eva Eeth Monroe, Sara Ann Ratclitt, and Molly Tee Leeper examine the layout sheets be- fore starting work on the organization section. ft a Planning the activities and teature section are Anne Harris, Virginia Day, Diane Reid, and Delma Nelson. With bands from the Ark-La-Tex area, Byrd Band paraded for the opening day at the Louisiana State F air, closing with a mass band concert on the court house square. ln the All-State Orchestra formed for the State Teachers' Convention, Byrd Band had thir- teen representatives, ten of whom held first chair. ln conjunction with the vocal department, the band presented a Christmas program. With all this activity the group has found time to present two thirty-minute radio programs and to play two spring concerts. As far as band members are concerned, the two highlights of the year have been their first appear- ance in the long-awaited new uniforms and the trip to the Highlander Festival at Dallas. A three-ring circus of Work, Advancement, and Pleasure has been the reward of those band mem- bers who have cooperated with their school and their community during the past year. Mr. Alvin N. He is a member of two national honorary music fraternities, Kappa Kappa Psi and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonea. LAUGHLIN HIGHLIGHTS CE EYRD' Natchitoches O-Byrd 21 The Byrd Yellow Iackets made their initial appearance of the season against the Red Devils of Natchitoches. Early in the game it became apparent that Coach lack RoWan's deceptive single Wing offensive was clicking and the Purple and Gold held the upper hand. Every Iacket in unttorm saw action during the one-sided fray. Runs by Humphries, Childers, and Sugar, and expert blocking of Murphey, Morgan, Rhodes and Fleming put the game on ice. Touch- downs were scored by Childers, McBride, and Gillen. Page One Hundred Eighteen S FCDCDTBALL SEASCDN Fortier 7-Byrd 6 For the tirst time in history the Fortier Tarpons ot New Orleans invaded Shreveport. The con- test was marred by frequent second halt fumbles and bad breaks against both teams. For- tier's touchdown came in the third quarter, after which the Iackets were held down until the last few minutes ofthe game when Huff intercepted a pass in mid-field that put Byrd on the march. At the final whistle the Purple and Gold were on the Tarpon's 3-yard line threatening to repeat Humphries' touchdown. Page Gne Hundred Nineteen Istrouma 41-Byrd O tstrourna, one of the strongest qrid machines in Louisiana AA competition, dealt the fackets their worst defeat of the season. The Indians scored twice in the first several minutes of play and scored every quarter afterwards. Byrd threatened once on a long run by Humphries but the drive was subdued. Porta, Saizon, and Chaney ac- counted for inost of the Indians' touchdowns. PHILIP LALENA, BUDDY HACKENIOS, IAMES FLEMING IEWEL HUMPHRIES Left Half End Center Tackle Byrd-Bossier Game Bolton l8-Byrd l2 A tricky Bolton eleven proved too deceptive for the Byrd squad and pulled one of the most an- cient of all football capers, the hideout trick, on the Iaclcet eleven. Twice Broussard hit receivers along the sidelines with touchdown heaves before the lackets caught on. Humphries proved to he the star for the Byrd eleven with his running and passing. l-laynesville 7-Byrd U l-laynesville's mud-splattered Tornado slipped and slid to the North Louisiana championship with a decisive defeat over a muddy Iacket eleven. The field turned into a slippery turf, and the rain spoil- ed homecoming ceremonies. Couch accounted for l-laynesville's touchdown during the first period. The whole Iaclcet eleven played a hard game with Humphries and Sugar accounting for most of the yardage gained. The Lions had the game wrapped up in the first five minutes of the game, but the Iackets fought hard until the last whistle sounded. Humphries and Sugar afforded the only scoring threat in the last quarter when they drove down to Ouachita's 3-yard line, but the Lions held and kicked out of danger. Sulfur 19-Byrd 25 The lackets snapped a four-game losing streak by defeating Sulfur, Oklahoma. lt proved to be a very interesting game, changing from a one-sided show through the first three periods to a spectacular last- quarter scoring melee. lt was the first victory for the lackets since the Homer game. Sgt.-at-Arms ln this, the seventh year of the Student Council at Byrd, the organization has again succeeded in performing efficiently its two major functions, the promotion of more active student partici- pation and the administering of school improvements. The Council was founded for the purpose of giving the student body a voice in its own affairs and to help prepare more students for our democratic Way of life. The organization is com- posed of one representative of each home room whose duty it is to receive from the members of his home room all problems concerning and affecting the school, and to present these problems before the assembled body for action. The burden of the group is borne by the committees which are designed to deal With those needs of the school that come under their jurisdiction. This year saw the completion of six tennis courts, a skating rink, and other facilities of the Byrd Memorial Youth Center, a dream project of the 1945 student council. Another task Worthy of much notice is the Council's attempt to interest other high schools in Louisiana in drafting plans for the formation of student participation groups like our own and in affiliating with the National and Southern Associations of Student Councils. The highlight of this most successful year was the attendance of three Byrd delegates at the annual S.A.S.G. at St. Petersburg, Florida. Page One Hundred Thirty-seven lUNlCR RE CRCS Q X X. During the past year many services have been rendered in various fields. Certificates were issued to girls completing courses in First Aid and Home Nursing. A tea Was given honoring new members of the faculty, and the annual Red Cross assembly was presented to the student body and broadcast to the public. TWO hundred dollars was sent to the National Children's Fund, a one hundred dollar scholarship was given to a Byrd student, and seventy-five gift boxes were packed and shipped to the children of Europe. Entertainment and donations have been presented to local charity institutions. Meetings are held once a month with representatives from each home room in attendance. The work of the group is carried on through various committees under the leadership of Virginia Day, Ruth Ann Barnette, Anne Rieves, Molly Tee Leeper, Raymond Baumgardner, Ieanne Grantz, Sidney Raymond, Emily Goss, Donald Smiley, Patricia Oden, Eva Beth Monroe, Meri- lyn Fox and PGQQIY Voelcker. Tribuni Twenty-six years is a long time, but Forum Latinum has managed to run off just that many years, complete with all the trimmings of a banquet at the Washington-Youree Hotel as well as many other get-together meetings each year. However, the social life is not the main object of the Forum Latinum. Our plan of organization, similar to the old Roman government, gives more boys and girls an opportunity to serve and work. The main officers are these: two consuls, who serve as presiding officers and preside alternate- ly, a scriba, who keeps the record of the meetings and attends to the correspondence of the club: and a Quaestor, who looks after all financial matters and collects the club dues. These officers, selected by popular vote, are assisted by various other officers appointed by the elected officers, with the sponsors acting as advisors. The programs consist of interesting studies from Roman History and Literature, in addition to plays, music, skits, and contests in both Latin and English. ' The membership of the Forum is divided into two sections, known as the Upper and Lower Forum Latinum. The Upper Forum has enjoyed many playlets and skits such as Latin Grammar Speaks, Death of a Democracy, Conspiracy of Catiline',' Cicero Walks With Washington and Lin- coln at Midnight, Thanksgiving for Latin, A Trip Through Roman History by sound effects, One Day As A Roman, Roman Court Trial, and The ldes of March. ln accordance with the plans of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South, both Forums observed National Latin Week with an assembly program and special Forum pro- grams. Miss l-letty Ecker sponsors the Upper Latin Forum and Miss Irma Robinson the Lower. After a review of the year's work we feel that We have lived up to our motto- Excelsior. The local chapter formed at Byrd in 1935 has enjoyed eleven years of growth and has been a very active group since Ianuary, l946. On April 22, 1947, the Byrd chapter of the National Honor Society conducted an assembly in recognition of the eleventh anniversary to pay honor to those students who had rendered outstanding service, in time and effort, for the betterment of the school. Faculty members chose these pupils for the recognition service. Byrd in 1916, is incorporated with the French classes to give the students a stronger understanding of the language and its set- ting in the worlds of yesterday and today. Particular emphasis is placed on the art, literature, and music of France, an understanding of which is important for a wide knowledge of the cultural language of the world. The club meets twice each month, at which time an interesting program is presented. In order to command a beneficial use of French, it is necessary to have the facility of speak- ing fluently. Therefore, as a means of improving diction, records by Pierre Macy of William and Mary College similar to those used during the war by the U. S. Army are used by volun- tary groups meeting after school. These records prove very successful, the chief effects being the acquired familiarity of idiomatic expressions and native pronunciation of the language. The club is sponsored by Miss Marie Therese LeBlanc, Whose unselfish efforts are in great measure responsible for the success of Le Cercle Francais. Softball, soccer, volleyball, and relays made up the main events. Page One Hundred Seventy-seven TENNIS DON BROWNLEE . . President ANN BURWELL . . Vice-President LINA LUSK . .
