With the passing of the years, its accomplishments and importance have steadily increased. The Council consists of one representative from each home room of the school whose duty is to receive from the members of his home room all problems concerning or affecting Byrd High, and to present these problems before the assembled council for discussion and action. Each committee of the organization is designed to administer to one or more particular needs of the school and is assigned to perform any duty which falls under its jurisdiction. The proceed- ings of the Council are directed by its officers with the principal and a faculty sponsor as ad- Visors. Some of the projects of this year's Student Council are: the publication of a handbook, the con- struction of new trophy cases, work on the Byrd Memorial Youth Center, a weekly column in a local paper, and revision of the constitution. The Student Council will continue in the future as it has in the past because the responsibility and training it gives our students have caused it to be recognized as an integral part of C. E. The l946 cage team proved to be a dark horse finishing with a much better record than had been expected. 35 of the 49 games played were won for a .7l4 average. The Iackets placed first in three events, second in another, and made a creditable showing on many other oc- casions. Following this the lackets began building up a rec- ord until they reached their highest point of ei- ticiency for the season at the Byrd-Y.M.C.A. Tourna- H. B. In this outstanding meet the Purple and Gold survived the field of thirty teams to Win the championship for the third time in the 2l-year history of the tournament. Shortly after- wards the Iackets Were crowned the Caddo Parish champions in the Bodessa tournament. As a reward for their hard work and successful season, Coach Cox sent the boys south to Baton Rouge to participate in the state rally. Byrd closed the season by Winning the championship play-oft game of the Y.M.C.A. High School League, defeating a scrappy Elm Grove five 22-21. B COACH Cox KETBALL At the start of the season the lackets had several obstacles facing them which threw a damper on their hopes of matching the records of the successful teams of recent years. With the exception of Robertson, Long, and Hatha- way, the entire squad was green material. In addition there was no gymnasium for regular practice. The Y.M.C.A. was used in the early part of the season as a practice court for developing the smooth system of co- operation. In spite of these circumstances this enthusias- tic squad of boys quickly developed a swiftly passing team which in the later stages of the season was replaced by a more accurate shooting squad. The team improved steadily until it reached its peak at the Many tournament, where it placed second. Byrd's lone touchdown came on a left end sweep by Milam during the first halt. Byrd 12-Bolton 26 Bolton led all the way in Byrd's second encounter with a strong tearn from South Louisiana. The Iackets maintained a safe lead throughout the game sparked by the outstanding playing ot Harrison and Milam. FOOT LL Byrd 19-Natchitoches 8 With only three lettermen in uniform, the Byrd Yellow lackets made their initial appearance for the season against Natchitoches. Soon after the opening kick-off it became apparent that the new T formation was clicking and the Purple and Gold held the upper hand. Buns by Harrison, Humphries, and Leonardg blocking by Galloway: and expert ball-handling by Ca- ruthers put the game on ice for the Iackets in the first half. Touchdowns were recorded by Losey, Harrison, and Humphries. Byrd 50-Bastrop O Every member of Byrd's squad saw action against the highly rated Bastrop Rams. The feature of the evening was Stricklands 69-yard dash after a pass interception. Leonard, Murphey, Smith, Barnidge, Harrison, and Humphries accounted for the night's scores. All students studying first year Latin are eligible for membership in the Lower Latin Club, which meets on the second and fourth Thursdays Of each month. This club, Organized on the same plan as the Upper Latinum Forum, has the three-fold purpose Of bringing boys and girls together socially, giving more students Opportunity to develop leadership, and studying the social conditions and customs of ancient Rome.
