Dobson, our head coach, graduated from Byrd High School after playing three years of football, four years of basketball, and two years of track. ln l923, Shreveport High School lost a star athlete to Centenary College of Shreveport. At Centenary, Dobson was under the coaching eye of Bo McMillen, who is now head coach at the University of Indiana. Then after a year at Centenary, Dobson went to Oklahoma City University where the present coach of Northwestern University, another one of the Big lO pow- ers, Lynn Waldorf was coaching. He played football at Oklahoma City University and lettered two years. He also lettered two years in track. Having received an offer to coach at Grand Bayou, Louisiana, Coach Dobson stayed there a year before coming to Byrd as assistant coach in l928. He became Byrd's head coach in l935 and produced a championship team that year and in 1937. Also his worthy coaching brought to Byrd the championship baseball team in l935, l937, and l94U. l. D. Cox After attending high school in Tuanah, Texas, Coach Cox then went to Austin College at Sher- man, Texas, where he lettered two years in football, three years in basketball, one of which he FCCTBALLHCCACI-ll Thirty was made team captain, and four years in baseball two years of which he was captain. Coach Cox has helped produce two champoinship football teams, and three championship baseball teams, as he has given to each of these sports six years of service. Also Coach Cox has given seven years of service to Byrd's basketball team, and he, alone, is the first person to coach a team from a large North Louisiana city to a state championship. This team he produced in l94U won forty games out of a schedule of fifty. l. I-l. I-lodgins Graduating from Byrd High in l928, Coach Hodgins was a well known athlete as he played four years of football, lettering three and was team captain his last two years. Coach Hodgins went to Tulane University where he earned a B.S. in Phy. Ed. degree. Later, after playing three years of baseball and football and being on the track team for a year, he went to the Bose Bowl in l932. Coming to Byrd in l935, Coach Hodgins' main charge has been the track team: however, he has greatly helped our football team to state championship positions. Mrs. Daisy Dobson Mrs. Dobson was born in Sibley, Louisiana, graduated from Minden High School and matriculated at Louisiana Tech and the University of Colorado. She has been teaching at Dodd College for the last nine years, where she is head of the secretarial department. She met Lee at Lynn's Business School in Shreveport. They have one child, a girl, Sandra, five years old. Mrs. Dobson never misses a game wherever they go, and is very interested in the game. They call each other Buddy or Bubs. Mrs. Kathrine l-lodgins Mrs. Hodgins was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and moved to New Orleans at the age of eight. She went to the Sophie B. Vtfright High School in New Orleans and to Soule Business College, also in New Orleans. She met hm at a Phi Delta Theta fraternity dance in New Or- leans, while he was lunior in Tulane. Were married in April 1932, have no children. She goes to all the foot- ball games, goes scouting with lim, and even watched him play football in Tulane. She calls him Pappy and he calls her most anything that comes into his rnind. Mrs. Dorothy Cox Mrs. Cox was born in Merkel, Texas and when two years old, went to the Congressional Library in Wash- ington and was thrown out for raising a row. She went to the Abeline, Texas High School and then to Hardin-Simmons University in Abeline. All through school, she fought for the underdog and the minority cause. She qot her degree in three years and grad- uated with a Magna Cum Laude honor. She went to Ouarah, Texas, where she began teaching, and where sho met Mr. Cox. He was at that time a coach in the high school there. They were married in Iune l92Q and have two children, David and Dorothy, Mrs. Cox is a Very ardent fan of both football and basketball, except for the fact that the umpire sometimes makes her mad. She calls Mr. Cox, L D. and he calls her ' either Dot or Dorothy. WWES AND SQUAD 6 .J Septemb Th 1 er l9 -Texarkana vs. Byrd e lackets arrived in Texarkana, full of tiaht and determination to win the trrst game of the season, defeating the Texarkana Blue Devils, 20-O. Einbrey returned the opening kick-oft to the Texarkana 40 yard line. With a reverse from White to Emhry, and a pass to Rogers on the next play, the lackets gained a trrst down, After an exchange of punts the Blue Devrls fought through to the Byrd IO, but the Iackot line held fast, Byrd retaliated with a touchdown by Enrhry. White went out in the second quarter and had to be removed to a hospital Where eight stitches were taken to close a cut on his lip. He also lost a front tooth. Embrey did not see action in the last half due to a lea iniury. October 17 Louisville, Ky., 34, Byrd O On a field, made slick from an all-day rain, the Louisville Demons trounced the Iackets 34 to O before an audience of 4,500. Helping to hoist the score were tour Jacket fumbles, recovered by the victorious hosts and converted into scores. The damp con- dition of the ground had something to do With this, however. However, Rogers, Denis, and Saucier's playing was a credit to the Jackets, yet the trio Catlin, Heil, and Schoening proved too heavy. Their ability in running up first downs was one of the main reasons for the largeness of the final score. The Louisville club bested the locals in every phase, having eleven first downs to the Iackets' five: except in kicking, Byrd averaged 37 yards to the home tearn's 34 yards. October 24fBolton tAlexandria, Lal 12, Byrd U , In a fast moving, action crammed contest, the Bolton Bears beat their way to their first victory over Byrd since 1926 and their second in twenty years. Iack King, half back, scored the first counter of the night, before the game was many minutes old. By catching the Iackets napping, he retrieved a rolling pigskin and made a 29-yard dash, wide around left end and over the-goal line. Milnar failed to add the extra point. The Iacket charges of Coach Lee M. Dobson were never able to work the ball past their own 40-yard mark. Byrd's running attack was stopped cold by Bolton and an attempted aerial offensive failed to pay off for Bolton grounded the ball on each attempt. So well covered were the Iackets by hard driving Bolton forwards that the team was never able to account for only one first down on play from scrimmage. A 15-yard penalty gave the local club another first down for a night total of two. Byrd remained on the defense through the second and third quarter and did a good job in keeping Bolton goal line. However, in the fourth guarter, the Bears started a 52-yard touchdown drive that was climaxed over from the 15. The Iackets threatened to score only in the fourth quarter as White attempted to pass to Denis from their 32. intercepted it, running back to the 30-yard line. This year Byrd's unrecognized underdogs were able to score a dime-story defeat over the Haynesville Tornadoes in the last three minutes of play, scoring two touchdowns with one extra point, making the score 13-9. From the opening play to the last whistle everyone had a very tense feeling. As soon as the it went wide. The game went on with neither side holding an advantage. Ouachita recovered the ball at the lacket i2 and was over in five plays with a four-yard thrust by Peace completing the drive. Their kick for the extra point was qood and the Lions were in front 7-O. Surely this is the best season Byrd has ever had in basketball. Our first defeat came in the Natchitoches tournament when Many, La., defeated the lackets l5el3. Coach l. D. Cox was very pleased with his team this year, One thing In COX! COQCI-1 he wanted to accomplish this year, which has never been done before was done. Byrd won the Y. M. C. A. tournament for the first time in seventeen years, Byrd defeated Pleasant Hill Z8-2l to cinch the tournament. The season is nearly to a close with 35 out of 38 games put on ice and 4 out of 6 tournaments, with the district championship 'tucked away to smile over. Vxfe are now coming to our big chance, the State Championship in Baton Rouge on March l3 and l4. The all important games. Go to it. Back row--Dudley, Vlfatkins, Waller, Moss, L. Schwartz Front row-I. Schwartz, Spencer, Ford, Weber riffs? Thirty-:line GERALD DUDLEY BEN FoRD DAYTON WALLER BASKETBALL Byrd, this year, completed one of the best seasons in recent years on the hard- wood courts. We did not win the state championship, but we made a very commendable showing at the tournament for the state championship-losing in the semi-finals to the present champion. Byrd's success was due entirely to the hard work and effort put forward by I. D. Cox, Coach, and the small, but loyal, squad of basketeers. There were but a few lettermen returning this year, but these were auqmented by a small con- IAMES SCHWARTZ Louis Sci-1wARrz GERALD SPENCER Forty MAC VVATKINS SEATS VVEBER tinqent ot out-ot-town and state veterans-E-Oklahoma, Kansas, etc. One ot the many highlights ot the season was the winning ot the Byrd-Y. The tinal game of this tourney with Many, La., was a breathftakinq atfair from the loeqinnina toss-up to the final whistle. Quill and Scroll desires to make membership an honor that will stand everywhere for the highest type of high school journal- istic achievement. , JEAN BAINS EvrE JEAN BARBER WAYNE BOND JEANNETTE BULLARD JACK DENIS SARA LEE GARRETT JoE GOVVAN JIMMIE HAMILTON BETTY JANE Hicxs BETTY Jo HOLCOMBE One hundred forty-eight SUE IOHNSON LOUISE KING CLINTON LONGWILL FLORENCE MOORE ROSALIE NELLE DELBERT OLIVER GUY OTTALINI FRED PARNELL MARTHA PEYTON TJIADELEINE PILGREEN ANNA KATHRYN RICHARD FRANCES ROGERS KATHLEEN SCI-IAVEY IEANNE WILLIAMS EVLYN WISE BILLIE YANCEY as LM, fn--f + 5 One hundred ioriy-nine of 8 vl, -Y -J EHIZJS LLQEIZE OI'I7Z6UZJy Philadelphia, Pennsylvania MUSIC Directors of Music jfzmes .Monroe Gavin 3612126 FLUTE S OTTALINI, GUY INNIS, IO ANN STRANGE, RUTH GAIENNE, ELLEN BUSH, ANN WHITE, MARY HELEN Bb CLARINETS SPRAIN, LORETTA WINDERWEEDLE, BAILEY IARROTT, RICHARD CHRISTIAN, MACK GAUTHIER, HERMAN GUIN, BILLY ALSTON, VERNON ROGERS, FRED HENDERSON, ELAINE STOCKWELL, ANN GARRISON, BILLY POLLARD, PEGGY CRUTCHER, WILFRED WILLIAMS, BOBBY WHITE, ALVIN ENTRIKEN, JEAN OBOES STAMPER, ELEANOR ROSENBLOOM, IEAN ENGLISH HORN CARROLL, MARILYN BASSOONS TREYNOLDS, IIMMIE KIDDER, BOBBY ALTO CLARINETS SMITH, CHARLES HILLMAN, BETTINA IDRUM MAJOR T O Band BASS CLARINETS WHITE, KENNETH CASSARD, RODNEY HOOKER, HENRY BLEDSOE, WILMA CON TRA BASS CLARINETS RICHARDS, ANNA KATHRYN NELSON, STANLEY ALTO SAXOPHON E SLAUGHTER, KATHLEEN MORTON, TERRY CLARK, GLEN TEN OR SAXOPHONE STOUT, CLYDE TRAYLOR, MOLLIE BARITONE SAXOPHONE TAFE, MARY LOU CORN ETS DUNCKELMAN, BOBBY MOORE, FRANK WASHINGTON, HARLAN EVANOFE, MITCHELL WELTER, MARY RUTH SMITH, IAMES BLANCHARD, TOE LE BLANC, ROY WYSE, TACK LAIRD, TOE BARITONES PRINDLE, RICHARD RICHIE, IOHN CARSON, FREDERICK HUNT, STEPHEN STRING BASS MOREEIELD, MAYBELLE BASSES MCGOVERN, EMMETT SNOWDEN, IAMES CALDWELL, CLIFTON PABODY, TACK HORNS ALSTON, GRETCHEN BRALFORD, MARY MIRACLE, GABON MILLER, BETTY JANE HENRY, ELOISE TROMBONES MORROW, FORBES GRIFFEN, FRED MADDEN, PAUL GRAFTON, BOBBY HIRSCH, WILBER SHORT, BEN HARP GOWEN, ERNESTINE TIMPANI BROOKE, LOIS MARIMBA LILLIBRIDGE, RUTH RUST, IOY PERCUSSION HANNA, MAXWELL ROGERS, DONALD HOLLAND, IOE One hundred fifty-three The V school year was brought to a bril liant finale for our band when its members returned from the State Festival as the only superior band in Louisiana in Class A. Probably no single accomplishment is so Valuable as the knowledge that one could, if called upon, deliver a clear and effective message before a group of people. Everyone usually finds him or herself in a position in which such knowledge is important. So it is not only debating but all forms of public speak- ing that the debating club tries to encourage. Book reviews, reports on current topics, and many other informal types of speaking, important in the future of its members are part of its schedule. The greatest honor coming to the team, chosen from those members who have the best speak- ing ability, has been the winning of the General Excellence Cup at the District N. E. Also Byrd Debaters have captured second place in debate at both the Denton and Denison tournaments. ln November, 1941, Byrd and Fair Park were hosts to l4 schools of Louisiana and Texas at their own tournament. The present Girls' Debating Club was organized in l936. The sponsors have included Miss Mertis Foster, Miss Mary Ellen Lutz, Mrs. M. E. Hurlbut, and Miss Louise Oliver.
