DOBSON With a lengthy career in football behind him. Coach Dobson is able to give the team the fruits of past ex- perience. Every coach wants a winning ball club. Thus far in his role as head mentor and Byrd High School athletic director Dobson has not been disap- pointed. JIM HODGINS Hodgins, though definitely connected with football activities, is generally recognized for his relations in track and field events. The track squad this year under his direction topped all expectations. J. D. COX Another pigskin instructor, J. D. Cox, also carries the colors of the school on the hardwood floors of the cage court and the baseball diamond. His charges in both departments have made an enviable record. OL Coaches Jim Hodgins Track J. D. Cox Basketball anc ItL Lettermen THE 1938 FOOT Between The Halves coveted state title, the season was consid- ered a moral success. Only one game was lost to a conference team, that to the Haynes- ville Golden Tornado. Predictions favor an- other great ball club for the 1939 session. Byrd High School’s ever-mighty Yellow Jac- kets emerged from 1938 gridiron warfare with a season percentage of .555 points. Ten games were played, five won, four, lost, one tied. Although the Jackets fell short of the Dan O'Donnell Tackle Nick Elina Center BALL, SEASON Byrd 44, Winnfield 0 In the initial game of the 1938 campaign, Byrd's Jackets downed the Winnfield Tigers by 44 points. Faced with an impregnable defense, the Tigers were held to a lone first down and never once crossed the mid-field stripe. Every member of the Byrd squad per- formed. Byrd 13, Texarkana 20 A thrilling final quarter forward and lateral that clicked for a 65-yard gain was sufficient to turn back the Yellow Jackets when they met Texarkana on foreign soil on September 23. Jerry Mize and Edgar Wilson scored for the Jackets. The game was a non-conference affair, having no disastrous effects on Byrd's state race chances. Here Comes Wilson Byrd 0, Little Rock 38 With perhaps the most colorful high school gridiron attack as had ever been witnessed locally, the Little Rock Tigers came storming out of the Ozarks to administer a 38-0 de- feat to the Byrdmen on September 30. The Jackets, still inexperienced in many respects, were outplayed in practically every depart- ment. This has been acclaimed as Byrd's most severe downing in 11 years. Bill Bailey End Paul Walker Back Sydney Boone End Byrd 0, Port Arthur 44 Fay Gilmore The Purple and Gold took its third consecu- tive setback on October 7 at the hands of the Port Arthur Yellow Jackets. The game, play- ed in Port Arthur, featured close play during the first half, but at the beginning of the sec- ond period the Port Arthur machine began to roll. Three times in the first stage the Jac- kets from Shreveport were turned aside with- in striking distance of the enemy goal line. Another Goal Kicked Byrd 25, Jefferson Davis 0 Coming back to the home town the following week, the Byrd lads presented a bewildering attack against the invading Jefferson Davis High School of Houston, Texas, and wound up on the long end of a 25-0 score. In the second half, Mize captured an enemy pass and jaunted 68 yards for a touchdown. In- terest in the Purple and Gold was quickly revived by this surprising victory. Byrd 24, Homer 2 Inspired by the victory over Jeff Davis, the Byrdmen journeyed to Homer, Louisiana on October 21 where they accounted for four touchdowns and a decisive win at the ex- pense of the Pelicans. The attack was led by Fred Cooke and Jerry Mize, Cooke scor- ing with a 45-yard sprint on the second play of the game. Homer scored 2 points on a safety in the fourth quarter. Byrd 26, Ouachita 6 Playing at Northeast Center L.S.U. stadium in Monroe, the Jackets on November 4 clash- ed with the Ouachita Lions, reputedly one of the strongest teams in the state. The Jackets, however, put the stinger to the Lions and emerged victorious with a 26-6 decision. The Lions scored their lone touchdown on a for- ward pass. Prominent in the forward wall of the Yellow Jackets were Alfred Buron, Nick Elina and John Meagher. Prior to this game, the Lions had been undefeated. The game, played at Louisiana State Fair Grounds stadium, was witnessed by 8,000 spectators. Edgar Wilson was outstanding in the Jacket back- field. Byrd 12, Vivian 0 Introducing Byrd High School's first Home- coming celebration with proper style, the Yellow Jackets took the enthusiasm out of the Warriors from Vivian with a 12-0 drub- bing. The Byrd punting combination of Mize and Wilson averaged 45 yards per kick. A feature of the classic was the demonstration staged between the halves. Gold Bugs, Purple Jackets and Band joined in a unique lighting trick. Lighted flares spelled Wel- come, Old Grads. Battling for the city prep school title, Byrd's Jackets deadlocked with Fair Park High School's Indians 7-7 before an estimated crowd of 10,000. Fiercest rivalry was displayed not only on the gridiron but between respective cheering groups as well. For Byrd Wilson scored from the one-yard marker following a long drive from the 40- yard line. Russ converted from placement. Final rounds of competition were heartbreakers to the Jac- ket cage squad. Tournaments at Haughton, Logansport and the Y.M.C.A., were lost in the final rounds. Cox Spills the Beans Over the Record Book Season Resume Fourteen squadmen saw active service throughout the basketball campaign. Of this number five are seniors, seven are juniors and two are sophomores. The five seniors who will be lost through graduation composed the usual starting team. The squad, during the course of the season, participated in tournaments and rallies at Haughton, Ruston and Vivian, Louisiana. It also took part in the local Y.M.C.A. annual tournament. In the yearly battle for city cham- pionship honors with Fair Park High School, the Byrd quintet was decidedly superior.
