Byrd High School nt Vie With the true affection and high esteem borne for this woman: with the memories of her wonderful accom- plishments treasured in our hearts: and with our minds full of countless thoughts. felt rather than said: we are moved to show a part of our everlast- ing memory for Miss Lucile Richardson in the dedication of the 1938 Gusher. This volume represents the re- sult of a combined effort to present in the most attractive manner possible a review of the various phases of high school activities that will en- able us to treasure the aca- demic year of Nineteen Thirty- Eight as a never-to-be-forgotten joy. lts purpose is to recall the happy hours spent in the class- rooms and on the campus . . . to bring back familiar faces of classmates and teachers . . . and to record for our fireside age printed and pictorial sub- stantiation of the hazy dreams of our almost forgotten high school days. ,J ui K ,-, .. REVIEW Entering upon the third year of its existence, the First Batallion, Shreveport High Schools, last September began a still broader program as the added subjects included in the third year work necessitated additional hours of instruction in theoretical and practical work in the course of military science and tactics. With a total enrollment at the beginning of the school year of 463 regularly enrolled ca- dets, and 87 under the classification of Non-ROTC tstudents under age or in their fresh- man yearl the Battalion presented an impressive appearance with its four companies of three platoons each, and a Drum and Bugle Corps. Although the Non-ROTC students were ineligible for enrollment in the ROTC they have received the same training as their classmates, and have courageously carried on even though handicapped by the fact they were not authorized to wear the uniforms. Those in this group who became eligible as the school year progressed were promptly enrolled and were issued uniforms. ,EL h For the second year, the First Battalion was represented in the Fourth Corps Area and the National Hearst Trophy Rifle Competition. Two teams were in both series of marksman- ship contests. Members of the rifle teams were selected from the approximately three hun- dred second and third year cadets who qualified and who competed for a place on a team by firing on the gallery rifle range. Every effort was made to train, by actually firing, the maximum number of cadets. The evidence of consistent effort was indicated by the better score made this year. A real foundation has been laid and there is every-assurance that the First Battalion will pro- duce an increasing number of excellent marksmen. Rifle marksmanship being but one of many subjects in which the ROTC cadet is instruct- ed, too much time could not be devoted to any one subject, each subject being given its proportional share of the available time. With the beginning of a new school year, new commanders and leaders must be ap- pointed. These are selected, first, from seniors in their third year of ROTC training: next, seniors in their second years: then juniors in their third year, then juniors in their second. ln practically all cases cadets with the highest scholastic grades were selected first in their respective groups. ' A never failing thrill to those most interested is produced by observing the manner in which the newly appointed cadet leader responds to the obligations placed upon him in keeping with his rank. ln nobility there is obligation, is a motto of the French. ln rank there are responsibilities, could paraphrase this. The cadet leaders of the 1937-38 classes have responded brilliantly. Now, as the school year is drawing to a close, there are 489 regularly enrolled and in addi- tion, 30 not enrolled who are taking this course. Add to this those 20 outstanding and snappily uniformed girl sponsors, the batallion presents an appearance that any school or city has just reason to feel proud of. THE RIFLE TEAM As early as possible in the school year theoretical instruction in Rifle Marksmanship was begun. This included the care, cleaning and nomencla- ture of the rifle: this early instruction being followed by sighting and aiming exercises. Later in the year, the use of the sling and various positions were explained and the cadet required to practice the sling adjustment and the science of quickly getting into the various positions. ' As rapidly as possible all cadets who qualified in the preliminary instruction were required to fire on the gallery range, using the calibre .22 rifle in this practice. As the cadets proved themselves capable, they were assigned to rifle teamsy three teams being formed in the early stages and later was reduced to two teams, the less capable riflemen being assigned as substitutes. These two teams were developed by frequent practice, and were eventually entered in the Fourth Corps Area Gallery Rifle Matches. ln these matches, which required approximately one month to complete, the teams made highly satisfactory scores. From the two rifle teams, of fifteen men each, were selected two fiveemen rifle teams to fire in the Hearst National Rifle Matches. As in the Corps Area Matches, highly satisfactory scores were made. Necessarily limited, time and facilities did not permit the entire group of qualified cadets to secure the amount of practice the ammunition allowance permitted, but every effort was made to insure that allwqualified cadets did fire and obtain as much practice as the time would allow. With the knowledge gained, and with additional practice, a very large number of cadets may become proficient in the firing of a rifle. In . .1 ,310 ,- x. ww 4 M 1' A x, 'E f' 1 A r X . DWIGHT GREEVER DAVIS Much of the music departments extraordinary success this year has been as a result of the excellent supervision ot Mr. Davis, who has given his talent and helped in every way pos- sible to better our musical organizations, thus bringing the music to as high a standard as may be looked tor in any high school organiza- tion. Music is now on an equal footing in the curriculum with the mathematics, sciences, and languages as a result of Mr. Davis's efforts. lVlUSlC,,' DEPARTMENT As a titting conclusion to Dwight Greever Davis's second successful year as instructor oi music at Byrd, the band was rated superior in the annual band contest held in Baton Bouge and the music department was awarded the general excellence cup denoting the best organization ot its kind in the state. This event came as a climax to a most satisfac- tory year filled with achievements ranging from soloist triumphs, both instrumental and vocal, to ensemble honors, orchestral awards, and band successes. I L I Richard Brown, Drum Major The immaculate gaily colored uniforms of the Byrd Bands have been seen tre- auently this past year on parade as well as on numerous other programs in the city. Several times it has been requested to play at dedications and charity shows. The Ark-La-Tex band testival also was included in its activities. Une ot the highlights ot the band year was its second annual concert in the school auditorium. lt was well attended and was a pertorrnance worthy ot the organization which presented it. . Tense! Thus we have the exciting week of campaigning and voting between the candidates for the Mardi Gras honors of the Byrd High Mardi Gras, The annual ball held at the Broadmoor Pavillion on Tuesday, March l, l938, at nine o'clock. At the sound of the heralds, at the stroke of nine, the annual Mardi Gras was ushered in with the beginning of the Coronation ceremony by the arrival of the Royal Party arriving from the land of Mardi Gras, First of the party to make their entrance were the ribbon bearers, Miss terry Matthews, lovely in neutral lace with purple, and Miss Dorothy Eylers becomingly gowned in agua marine lace. Miss Matthews was escorted by handsome Mr. Iohnny Creed, while Miss Eylers was ably assisted by Mr. Robert iohnson. Each young lady carried a hand bouquet. Next of the Royal Party to make their appearance were the Princesses Miss Helen Heath looking quite pretty in peach chiffon, and quite ably escorted by Mr. lim Whitten. She was followed by Miss Frances Dorchester attractively gowned in light blue chiffon, and escorted by stalwart Mr. Henderson Dowling. Then after a few brief moments the charming Maid of Honor, Miss lohnriy Mae Moore, made her appearance lovely in peach net and escorted by the handsome blond Mr. Lawrence Griffin. Silence and expectation ruled as the arrival of the Queen was anticipated. Then Hark! Her majesty . . . Queen Frances of the House of Glassell, has arrived, breathtakingly beautiful in white chiffon with silver threads, matching and bringing out her brunette beauty perfectly. The Queen entered graciously, and majestically on the arm of her chosen King Glenn Wilson. Queen Frances was then crowned by her King the Queen of the Byrd High Mardi Gras of l938. Danc- ing and merry making prevailed 'till twelve and it was said this was the most successful Mardi Gras ever. RCD-YALTY if. me--I .SIP NW' 4 I 9 N 34 R -ag -, Af' -, M, i f .3 W fIf? y I Is . President, MRS. lsADoRE LIEBER The Byrd High Parent-Teacher Association climaxed its most brilliant and suc- cessful year when it was acclaimed the largest P.-T. A. crganization in Louis- iana. It also has the largest membership of its history. The P.-T. A. owes to the faculty and pupils, who played a great part in its success, many thanks for the co-operation throughout the year. The outstanding projects of the year have consisted of several one-act plays sponsored by the Dramatics classes and the weekly community sing nights put on by the program chairman, Mrs. Percy Iohnson. The health chairman, Mrs. W. I. Sandidge has placed towels and soap in the girls' rest room. Mrs. A. R. Wherritt, citizenship chairman, has ably carried on the work begun by Mrs. McCann in the student King For A Day project. Mrs. Percy Osborne has kept many of our students in school who otherwise would have been unable to attend and Prof. Koffman helped and assisted in bringing to our school the world famous concert artist Germani and his famous Hammond organ. These are only a few of the projects undertaken by the P.-T. A. and the group closes its most eventful and successful year well satisfied with its accomplish- ments. 1 HIHHHES THE COACHING STAFF COACH DOBSON - Turning out two out of three championship ball clubs, is the enviable record of Coach Lee Dobson who has just completed his third year as head coach at Byrd. He has rendered invaluable service in developing Byrd's football team. His precise criticism has corrected numerous minor flaws and brought about closer co-operation among the boys. We all look forward to great things from next year's team, under the direction of one of Byrd's former football players, Coach Lee Dobson. COACH HODGINS Coach lim Hodgins assumed the duties ot track coach this year, taking the place of Coach Sage. He is very popular among all the boys and turned out a good track team. He is also the football line coach, utilizing his years of ex- perience on both the Byrd and Tulane teams. COACH COX After several years of invaluable service in the development of another great football team and the Iunior Iackets team. He also was head coach of the basketball teams and baseball team. Coach Dobson completed his third year as head coach of the Iackets by nailing down nother state championship. lthough the team looked' ragged in spots during pre-season practice, it soon shaped into a well-organized and smooth-working machine. They opened the season by an easy win over Horatio. Every man on the bench saw action and ran up 48 points against their oponnents' 7. They next journeyed to Hope, Ark., where they came from behind in the last half to down Hope 25 to 12. The game dedicated the new Hope Stadium. The next game found the Iackets in Little Rock, where they were battled to a 7 to 7 standstill in agruelling game. They were again battled to a standstill the next week by the rival Yellow Iackets of Port Arthur High. Final score: Iackets 13, Port Arthur 13. ln the following four games the Iackets downed Minden, Horner, Bolton, and Ouachita in quick order by respective scores of 48 to 13, 19 to 6, 20 to 6, and 32 to 6. The following week the lackets gained revenge from the Golden Tornado of Haynesville by defeating them 13 to 6 on the Haynesville gridiron. The next game came with Fair Park and it was with determination that the squad took the field. They fought bravely against the Indians, trouncing them 14 to 0 before 13,000 spedtators, the largest crowd ever to witness a prep school game in Shreveport. The defeat of the Indians gave the Iackets the North Louisiana championship. r On the day of December 18, the lackets met the Eagles of Warren Easton, South Louisiana's repre- sentative for the state title, at the Fair Grounds. The Iackets took the game 14 to 0, winning the state championship and bringing down the curtain on the 1937 season. Frank Boydston, faculty manager, has completed his third successful year with the Yellow Iacket squad. Among the many things credited to him are football field improvements such as a new fence around the field, a modern scoreboard, and enlarge- ment of the two entrances. ln addition to this he was always busy with the sale of football tickets. liigagement of trains and busses for out-of-town games also fell under his supervision. ' Mr. FRANK BoYDsroN, Manager The tour cheerleaders ot Byrd Hiqh School ot l938 certainly did prove, without a doubt, amonq they best cheering squads the school has ever had. They helped to carry the toot- ball team to win another Louisiana State Championship. FRANCES McCoY Mac, a popular member of the Senior Class, was elected cheerleader in her Freshman, Iunior, and Senior years, and has proven a very valuable member of it.
