V ■ x COPYRIGHT, 1937' Fern Foster. Editor-in-chief Shirley Safford, Business Manager Zola Lynn Talbot, .Associate Editor Virginia Chadick, Associate Editor Bobette Jordan. Associate Editor Adelaide Boggs, Associate Business: Manager Ann Carter Johnston, Associate Business Manager Bobby Moody, Associate Business Manager THE STUDENTS OF BYRD HIGH SCHOOL PRESENT THE .V-J. SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA To Mr. E. L. Alberson, whose interest and guidance has endeared him to every student in Byrd High School, we, the Senior Class of 1937, dedicate this issue of our annual, the Gusher. Although he is now working with a different group of students, we will always claim him as one of our own. Our loss has been another's gain. In this small way we hope to express our appreciation for his work. As the time for severing our four year old relations draws near we are filled with a desire to preserve in the memories of our fellow class mates a record of deeds accomplished, dreams fulfilled, aims realized, and high ideals at- tained. In looking back over these four years we find that they have become a very vital part of us. The happy times, the anxious hours, the hard-earned victories, and the beloved honors are all brought together in this book and are thus indelibly imprinted on our minds. We submit this Gusher to you, our readers, in the hope that it will enable you to treasure the Senior year of 1937 as a never-forgotten joy. Thrilling! Exciting! Thus describes the delightful week of campaigning, voting, and fun experienced at Byrd during the week of Mardi Gras. Climaxing this event- ful seven days, the annual Mardi Gras ball was held at the Broadmoor Pavillion on the evening of Feb. 9, 1937, promptly at nine o'clock. At the stroke of nine the heralds, Sammy Swor and Collins McCaleb, sounded forth the blast announcing to the kingdom that the Royal Party was approaching from the land of Mardi Gras. Entering first were the ribbon bearers. Miss Louise Roach, beautifully gowned in a tur- quoise blue chiffon, and escorted quite ably by handsome Broox Garrett, and Miss Dorothy Lambeth, charming and petite in pink mousseline de soie, which emphasized her beauty to the utmost, and escorted by the charming Buddy Tilbury. Immediately following the ribbon bearers came the princesses, beautiful Miss Harriet Lancaster, making a lovely picture in blue chiffon—escorted by stalwart Calhoun Allen, and Miss Frances McCoy, peppy and pretty as ever, in a gown of orchid chiffon, bringing out to the fullest extent her loveliness—escorted by that handsome blonde, Herbert Alexander. Then . . . the gorgeous maid of honor. Miss Lucille Northcott—enchanting and lovely in a pink mousseline de soie escorted by Herbert Townsend. Following the maid of honor were the two flower girls—Bettsy Hawkins and Martha Ann Sibley, the crown bearers, Martha Shaffer and Martha Peacock. Tenseness prevailed for the next few seconds as the lovely Queen Jeanette, of the house of the Sentell's, showing full dignity and grace in a gorgeous shimmering white satin and chiffon gown, with a train of pink satin covered with silver metal cloth, entered on the arm of her chosen king, Kenneth Rembert. Queen Snoxie was then crowned queen of Mardi Gras festivities and true festivity began. Dancing and joy prevailed throughout the remainder of the evening and the event proved to be one not readily forgotten in Byrd. CHE E'R Jim Bostick After completing a successful year as freshman cheerleader, Jim was elected a member of regular cheering squad this year and has proven a valuable member of it. Jeannette Sentell Snoxie, a popular member of the Senior Class, showed her loyalty to purple and gold this year by being an enthusiastic member of the cheering squad. Herbert Townsend In addition to serving his third year as Byrd High cheerleader, Her- bert organized a Pep Squad this year, a group of enthusiastic girls who were a great help to the Yellow Jackets. Marie King Another popular Senior who was a member of the cheering squad for the first time this year was Kitty. She was invaluable in furthering the suc- cess of the cheering squad and of the football team. Frances McCoy Mac was one of the peppiest members of the squad. As she is only a Junior, she will be back next year to cheer the Jackets on to success. Standing Left to Right: Frances McCoy, Marie King, Herbert Townsend, Jeanette Senlell, Jim Bostick. COLOR GUARD Major F. M.Hyndman Sergeant Charles C. King Major F. M. Hyndman assumed his duties as Professor of Military Science and Tactics for the First and Second Battalions of the R. O. T. C. in Shreveport High Schools on September 18, 1936. Since he officially began his duties here, the entire unit has shown marked im- provement over the battalions of the initial year of R. O. T. C. training. Major Hyndman entered the Military Service on June 4, 1914. He served in the Mexican Border Patrol from 1914 to 1915. On June 30, 1917, he was made Second Lieutenant of Cavalry. Major Hynd- man graduated from the Cavalry School in Ft. Riley, Kansas, in 1925. He was an instructor in this Cavalry School from 1927-1932. In 1933, he graduated from the Tank School, which is located in Ft. Benning, Georgia. He has been a Major, Cavalry, since August 1, 1935. Major Hyndman succeeded Colonel Wagner, who has been stationed in Fort Bliss, Texas. Sergeant Charles C. King became the Military instructor of the First Battalion at Byrd High School at the time of the introduction of military instruction into Shreveport High Schools in September, 1936. In May, 1905, he enlisted for Coast Artillery Corps. He graduated from the School of Submarine Defense, in the Electrician Sergeants’ Division, in 1907. Sergeant King enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1914. In July, 1914, he graduated from the School for Naval Electricians, which is located on Mare Island, California. From 1918-1922, he was employed by the Lake Torpedo Boat Company. He was employed by the Electric Boat Company from 1923 to 1924, and by the Ballard Oil Equipment Company from 1924 to 1926. He re-entered the Military Service in July, 1926, and was assigned to Headquarters of the Ninth Artillery District from 1926 to 1927. In 1927 he was assigned to the Third Division, in Ft. Lewis, in Washington, D. C. From 1927-1929, he was stationed at the Fourth Corps Area. From September, 1929, to the present date, he has been an instructor for R. O. T. C. units. Major Jack Lane Killen Helen Nickerson THE FIRST BATTALION OF THE SHREVEPORT HIGH SCHOOL R. O. T. C. UNITS Maintaining its interest and enthusiasm, the First Battalion has continued to move forward and gain ground as new and different subjects in military science and tactics have been taken up. Augmented by new recruits, who filled the ranks vacated by those cadets who graduated or withdrew from school last year, the Battalion has entered its second year, where the individual cadet is more fully beginning to realize that the military profession is indeed a science. In his first year, the cadet hardly takes his first step as he is taught and drilled in the schcol of the soldier, the squad, platoon, and company. He is also taught military courtesy and customs of the service, along with the principles of hygiene, sanitation, and first aid. In his second year, he advances to a point where he can actually fire a rifle, a calibre .22, and on an indoor range, but he finds that the principles of rifle marksmanship can be ap- plied to the small calibre weapon as well as to his U. S. Rifle, Cal. .30. In fact, he must apply the principles of rifle marksmanship if he desires to qualify with this weapon. But there are more things to a soldier's profession than driling and shooting. In fact, there is no end of things that he should know. In his second year's work he is taught map reading, scouting and patrolling, interior guard duty, and also, he learns that a good cadet should be versed in his duties as a citizen. Incidentally, he learns, if he has not previously done so, that the Constitution of the United States was so written as to provide for the defense of the nation. He learns that the full obligation of citizenship includes him in the system of defense. In all his activities as a cadet, the young man is trained for leadership and responsibility. If the qualities of a leader has been displayed or promised, the second year cadet, if he is a high school senior, and his grades in school satisfactory, he is promoted to squad leader, platoon commander, or possibly to the rank of company com- mander. The responsibility of the entire battalion was placed upon the shoulders of Cadet Jack Lane Killen, who was given the rank of Cadet Major and command of the First Battalion. Cadet Major Killen accepted the responsibilities with the enthusiasm that characterizes a leader. No effort has been spared by him to make the First Battalion the best cadet organization in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps. Each cadet officer, almost without exception, has given of his very best in making his organization the best. Captains Edward Brown, John Kennedy, Alvin F. Meyer, and Joe W. Webb have given their very best in the training of the cadets of their respective organizations. Enthusiastically assisted by their lieutenants they have each exerted every effort to build an organization of which they and their school could be proud. Although the training of the Battalion has been under the direct supervision of Staff Sergeant Charles C. King, Military Instructor, who in turn was under the Professor of Military Science and Tactics, Major Floyd M. Hyna- man. Responsibility for the instruction and training for the cadets has been more and more placed upon the Cadet Battalion Commander, who, through his officers, has assumed full the duties delegated to him. It is sincerely believed that the ROTC has won fairly the place it now occupies in the high school system of Shreveport and Caddo parish. R.O.T.C. STAFF Capt. THE RIFLE TEAM The Rifle Team of Byrd High School has shown throughout the year a remarkable ability at rifle marksmanship with the .22 caliber rifle considering the fact that each mem- ber has had only one year of practice. The team was decided upon the process of elimination until around 15 best shots were selected by our Professor of Military Science and Tactics Major Hyndman and our instructor. Sergeant King. The activities of this team were begun by competing in the Corp area matches in which the team came out below the average due to the fact that the majority of the other competing teams were composed of members who had shot for 2 or 3 years compared to our 1 year of practice. The next feat was a match with the National Guard in which Byrd came out on top in the general average after several matches were held in our own range. Following this came the Hearst trophy matches requiring the marksmen to shoot in the four positions; prone, sit- ting, kneeling, and standing as was done in the Corp area matches. On Tuesday, April 27, competitive matches between Byrd and Fair Park were started which wound up the schedule for the year. Some of the ambitious marksmen have joined the National Rifle Association and through the generosity of Sergeant King used the Battalion rifles in acquiring their limit of medals according to their own ability. Sergeant King and Major Hyndman feel sure of the success of future teams due to the number of Juniors who will be back to carry the lead in the contests for the coming year. However, the entire team feels that any credit which can be given is due to their efforts. Dwight Greever Davis Mr. Dwight Greever Davis, who has been our musical director for the past year, has given his talent and helped in every way to better our musical organizations. He has brought the music to the highest standard that any high school organization may reach. Davis brought to our school the subject of General Music, which should not be lacking in any school. He has increased the membership of the band to seventy-six members, and he has organized a school orchestra of twenty-six pieces. Davis was formerly director of music at Cherry vale High School, Cherry- vale, Kansas, where he taught Band, Orchestra, and Music Appreciation. He took active part in the musical organizations of Cherryvale, Kansas. Our musical director got his training from five different colleges. In 1930 he went to Kansas State Teachers' College, Pittsburg, Kansas, where he was a student conductor of Men’s Glee Club. In the summer he attended American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, Illinois. From 1931-'32 he at- tended National Band and Orchestra Camp, which is a University Extension Division in Interlochen, Michigan. In the fall semester from 1932-'33 Mr. Davis went to University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he was grad- uate student in General Public School Music. He later attended our own Louisiana State University. Mr. Davis is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a National Music Fraternity, and also Sigma Mu Delta, a National DeMolay-Masonic Fraternity. The Club was represented in the volley ball, basket ball, baseball leagues, and made a fine showing in each. The Club endeavors to offer to its members a well-rounded program. The last two months of the club year were dedicated to vocational guidance. Outside speakers, all well-known in their respective field, discussed their particular vocation. Programs of a humorous nature were also presented. Mock trials, amateur shows, Vox Pop's were all amusing and entertaining. Five dances, a banquet, and sev- eral weiner roasts were held, and the Club also cor- responded with out-of-town clubs. The membership for the year averaged about thirty. In the fall term of this year, the girls of this school realized a great need for such a club, and after succeeding in getting Miss Foster to sponsor them, they organized a Girls' Debating Club. At this time there are thirty-three members in the club. The weekly activities are a debate, prepared speeches, and impromptu talks. The larger portion of the Girls' Debating team are members of the Girls' Debat- ing Club, although membership in both is not compulsory. By taking part in the activities of such a club, one gains confidence and training in speaking before a group of people, and one develops the power of clear thinking. Byrd High School Yellow Jackets of today, and all those who carry the interests of the Jackets in their hearts, can take great pride in the heritage that has been handed down to them by the Jackets of the past ten years. During this time the Byrd men have captured the state championship in football five times, and were strong contenders in the years that they missed the title. They have also numbered among their victims such strong teams as those from Dallas, Little Rock, and Memphis. Jacket baseball teams have been consistently among the best in the state, and although the basketball and track squads have failed to annex the state title, they have put out a number of strong teams. From 1926 through 1931 the Jackets rode rough-shod over all opposition with such boys as Buck Bryan, Roy Friqua, Con- way, Baker and Lee Stokes leading the way. The Jackets had to build from the ground up in 1932. In the next two years the Jackets so far outclassed all opposition that it may well be said that during those 2 years there were 3 divisions of high school football in Louisiana—class B, class A, and Byrd High School. After losing practically their entire great team of 1935, the Jackets popped up with another surprisingly strong team the past season, going through their hardest schedule in years with but one loss, and that a one touchdown defeat by Haynesville, a fine team which went cn to win the state championship. Pros- pects for the coming season are good despite the loss by gradu- ation of Abney. McCain, Candella, and Killen. Coach Cox Again this year Coach J. D. Cox has rendered invaluable service in the development of another great football team, and the Junior Jackets team. He also was Head Coach of the basket ball team which won 15 out of 17 games this year. Coach Sage Coach “Pop Sage is an outstanding assistant coach ana really assists in more than one way. His excellent scouting has facilitated many games for Byrd. His precise criticism brings out many small flaws that hinder the best cooperation among teammates. Coach Hodgins Coach Jim Hodges is a popular coach among all football boys and his best work is line coaching. His years of experience on Byrd's team and later on Tulane's crack team show themselves frequently through his helpful and timeful corrections among all three teams. Coach Dobson Coach Dobson completed his second year as head coach of Byrd's football squad this year. His untiring efforts carried us dangerously close to another championship. Coach Dobson is a hard driving, but understanding coach and his urging to do better consequently draws from the team its hardest and best efforts. Our teams show better organization and more intelligent control since Coach Dobson took over his duties as head coach. We all look forward to great things from next year's team under the direction of one of Byrd's own former boys, Coach Lee Dob- Mr. Frank Boydston Mr. Frank Boydston was the faculty business manager of the 1936 Yellow Jackets. He worked in cooperation with two student managers, Rex Hollis and Robert Ellis, whose pictures do not appear. Under the able direction of Coaches Dobson, Sage, Cox, and Hodgins, the team progressed rapidly through the weeks of pre-season practice and was in perfect form to begin the season. The Jackets took to the floodlights for the first time on September 2b, when they won a smashing 32 to 12 victory over the Central High School of Memphis, Tenn. Featuring this victory was the smashing attack that the Jackets maintained. This attack tore the Memphis line to shreds and enabled the Jackets to smash their way to an easy victory. The Tigers of Little Rock, next on the schedule, were trounced by a score of 27 to 6. In this rough game two of the main Jacket players were in- jured badly, which was a blow to the team. F O O T B A L L SQL! A L) Next week found the Yellow Jackets playing on foreign soil for the first time of the season. In this encounter they fought the strong Port Arthur team to a scoreless tie. The game was played on a hot, wet, stifling night. The next game proved an easy one for the Jackets as they swept to a certain victory over Minden Crimson Tide. The reserves saw plenty of ac- tion during the game as the regulars were battered and bruised from the grueling battle of the week before. A trip to Homer came next, where the Jackets won a close battle from the Homer Pelicans by a score of 16 to 6. The Jackets displayed fine form in this game, and the team was greatly improved over the first of the season. The following game almost proved a tragedy for the Jackets, as they won a close 14 to 0 victory over the Bolton Bears, and the next game was with the Lions of Ouachita, whom they beat by a score of 21 to 6. The next game proved disastrous as the Jackets dropped the North Louis- iana Championship when they lost to the Haynesville Golden Tornado. The game was hard fought from the start to the finish. Haynesville scored by recovering a Jacket fumble deep in Jackets' territory. The Turkey Day battle with Fair Park closed the 1936 season. This was an easy one which the Jackets won 28 to 0. Clint McCain Clint is probably the best tackle to ever attend Byrd High. He had the honor of being chosen on the mythical All North Louisiana and the All State elevens. Leo Bird The fleet back acquired the name, Pony Express, during the past season by his frequent gallops into the pay dirt territory. Leo will return next year and will be a candidate for All State. Jack Abney Abney is marked as one of the greatest field generals to ever lead the Purple and Gold eleven. He was a hard driving back and also handled the jobs of punting and passing. This is Abney's last year and the team will never forget his services. Jack Killen One of the most endurable men on the squad, Jack played in every game this season, which was his last year. He is one of the hardest tacklers on the team. Charles Dufour This large tackle, who came from Fair Park High School, was a very valuable player on the Jacket team. He played a great game against his old teammates from Fair Park. Dufour was captain of this game. James Hendrick Hendricks alternated at the end position and his playing was a credit to Purple and Gold throughout the season. He was good cn both the defense and offense. LETTER MEN James Sweeney Fort Worth’s loss was Byrd's gain when Sweeney came to Shreveport to live. Although this was his first year on the team, Sweeney was a starter in the line-up. He brought the crowd to their feet more than once by his constant long runs. He was an outstanding member of the team. Guy Feducia Fiddler was out most of the season with an injury to the ligaments of his leg suffered in the rough game with Little Rock, but in the service that he did see, his blocking paved the way for many long gains. Odis Rainer Odis suffered a fracture of his leg during the early part of the season. During the time he did play he was a constant worry to the enemy elevens. Leon Candella Candella was one of the main cogs of the Jacket forward wall. His passes were flawless, his blocking deadly, and his defensive work splendid. This is Candella's last year on the team. Hugh McCall Jaws” lettered for his first time as he graduated from the ranks of the Jr. Jackets. We lose this fine back's services but wish him much success. Broox Garrett Playing his second year with the Jackets, Broox played outstanding ball at the end position through the entire season. Broox will be back next year so keep your eye on him. LETTERMEN Bickham Dickson Dickson was the shining star of the Purple and Gold line. He played in all the Jacket games as a starting guard. He will be back next year to offer his services. Roy Caviness Roy made his first Byrd letter this year. He will be a great factor in the building up of the squad for next season. He came from Tyler, Texas. Fred Cook Although one of the lightest men on the team, Fred Cook is very fast and elusive and hopes to nail down a regular berth on the 1937 edition of the Yellow Jackets. Ed Wendlind T-Bone is the best kicker on the team. His services were used frequently during the season on the backfield. He will be back next year. Marvin Martin Marvin possesses all the qualities of an experienced linesman. He is the chief understudy of Clint McCain. He saw much action in the season. Jerry Mize A first year letterman with all the qualities of a veteran. Jerry was the understudy of Leo Bird. He will be back next year with probabilities of being in the starting line-up. LETTER V1EN Lyman Richardson Lyman lettered for the first time this year. He began playing as a freshman and worked his way up to the varsity. He is an excellent passer, a good kicker, and knows when the right time comes to call the right play. William Newman Billy offered great prospects this year as the first reserve for Candelia. He is an excellent man for the pivot position but will not be back next year. Bobby Wyche This diminutive back is the fastest man on the squad.
