The reward of work well done is success. So all honor to those responsible for this wonderful book, all honor to the entire Class of 1936. May the ideals and ambitions of high school days he realized in a happy, useful life. GROVER C. KOFFMAN, Principal. It is with pleasure that we always look forward to the completion of another year's work. My earliest de- sire is that those of you who leave us will always re- member that it takes a lifetime of hard work and sacri- fice to huild a reputation, and only one unguarded movement to lose it. To climax the eventful campaigning week, tl1e annual Mardi Gras Ball was held at Broadmoor Pavillion on Tuesday evening, March 5 at 9:00 o'clock. At the stroke of nine the heralds, Alvin Meyers and Charles Peters, announced the ar- rival of the Royal Court, from the land of Mardi Gras. First of the royal party to enter were the ribbon bearers, Miss Francille Anderson, charming in pale blue pleated crepe and Miss Ramona Spurlock charming in pink lace, and on the arms of their escorts, Messrs. Harry Morris and William Brooks. Following the ribbon bearers and their escorts were a group of pages, crown bearers, and flower girls efficiently represented by Billy Slattery, Coots', Shaffer, Matty Lou Shaffer, and Peggy Dean Tullos. The princesses, Dorothy Courtney and Vivian Fleming entered next, lovely and vivaci- ous in pink and blue lace and escorted by Jack Abney and Hugh Malone. And ................ the maid of honor, beautiful, blonde Katherine Goodwin entered making a striking picture in pale blue mousseline de soir and escorted by her handsome knight, Howell iflabboll Stell. Then after a brief pause of tenseness .... ................ t he lovely Queen Betty, of the House of Redding, beautifully gowned in shimmering white satin, which offset her bru- nette beauty, entered and was escorted to the throne by her chosen king, Carl McCain. She was then crowned Queen of the Byrd High School Mardi Gras of 1936 and the true Mardi Gras festivity was begun. The remainder of the evening was spent in dancing and merry-making which will long be remembered. In 1914 Sergeant King joined the Navy and served during the war aboard a number of the U. S. submarines. From 1918 until 1926 he retired to civil life from which he reentered the coast artillery. In 1929 he was assigned to R. 0. T. C. duty and has since been the Military Instructor of several thousand lucky cadets. l95l MAJOR VERNON Woons MARTHA SHEPARD -I-he liiicst Battalion of the Shreveport School Units The First Battalion, of Byrd High School, under the command of Cadet Major Woods fabovel was organized for the first time on Tuesday, October 1, 1933, under the direction of Sgt. King, the Military Instructor, DEML, U. S. Army. Previous to this time only about eight of the three hundred and fifty boys enrolled had ever had any military training. Now with some four hundred and twenty boys, each and every one feels the re- sponsibility placed upon him for some particular part which he knows the rest of the Bat- talion expects him to do and do well. Since the first of October the Battalion has been in- structed and drilled in the School of the Soldier, School of the Squad, School of the Pla- toon, School of the Company, Rifle Marksmanship, Physical Drill, Parades and Ceri- monies, Military Courtesy, The Manuel of Arms and in the National Defense Act. On February 28, 1936, the first formal Parade was held at which the cadet officers were presented their swords by various patriotic orders and persons of the city. On March 27, 1936, Maj. Hagan of L. S. U. reported from Corps Area Head- quarters to inspect the First and Second Battalions and highly commended the P. M. S. 81 T. and the Military Instructor as well as the Cadet oflicers for their efforts, and left the First Battalion feeling that their efforts had not been spent in vain. On May 1, the First and Second Battalions held a Regimental Parade in the down- town section of Shreveport, followed by competitive drills between the two Battalions that evening. These events closed the 1935-36 seascn for the First Battalion which we, of Byrd High chool, feel has been very successful. l96l 1- -,-puny -ww -:-n- -rr. -:- n 5 if . I 1 ' - IQ. Q. This yenr the club commenced brilliantly with Here Comes Charlie, a hilarious three-act comedy, which was a decided success. Then followed a series of one- act plays under student direction. Among those were Alice's Blue Cownf, the cast of which was made up entirely of girls, directed by Paula Howard and Io Beth Nelson, The Ghost Story, a delightful comedy, under the direction of Dorthea Erickson and Patricia Fitz- gerald, and also Turtle Dove, a fantastic play, and 'KTWO Crooks and a Lady, a mystery. These were en- joyed during the assembly periods. The club closed a very successful year with the Senior Class Play, Growing Pains, a three-act comedy. lilies' ,,,,,,,,,,,1 ...J ...-.--........... l-........1...-...... ---11 y--QI I YX-l Avia, -ii... . -...-...lk . ....,...1..........-. --1.-1.. . ----.ii-. f -1- AIAZXCK. fillllllllldffl' in Ml1'c1'a Comes Cllfll'1l.6-9 M13IN'ros11. Byrd High School Boys' Debating Club celebrated its tenth anniversary with the most successful year since its founding in 1926. The membership has greatly in- creased and the debating teams have had an unusually success- ful season. All the progress the club has made can be attributed to its two sponsors, Miss Winnifred Pirkle and Miss Lilian Polk, who have worked faithfully and earnestly to make the club bigger and better. There is no other extra-curricula activity at Byrd High School that can give as much training and exert as great an influence for better speech, self-expression and independent thought. Though the seniors who are now members of this club may graduate this term, the helpful infiuence of the club will stay with them through the rest of their life, and the recollec- tions of their experiences in the Debating Club will linger among their most treasured memories. - ff -fd Debating Club ALLUMS, BILLY BARTON, BILL BENTZ, GEORGE BLAXTON, G. With Coach Dob- son at the helm, we feel assured of the future success of Byrd High athletic activities. COACH Cox Coach ,l. D. Cox gave able assistance in the task of building As the 1935-1936 editions of the Yellow Jackets in the three major sports. In the fall his energies and abilities were given to the Junior Jackets. guiding them through an unde- feated season. In the winter as Head Basketball Coach, he developed a highly successful basketball quintet. In the spring he was first assistant to Coach Dobson in developing the North Louisiana Baseball Champions. COACH SAGE assistant football coach. T. Raymond Sage proved an in- valuable aid. His accurate Scouting of Byrd opponents of the gridiron played a large part in the Yellow Jackets suc- cess of the past year. As Head Track Coach, Mr. Sage brought more honors to Byrd with his two man-track team. Although this is Coach Sage's first year as assistant coacn, his popularity with the students and his ability to inspire confidence. insures his continued success. COACH HODGINS Coach .lim Hodgins is another of Byrd's famous sons. He not only made football and baseball history while a wearer of the Purple and Cold. but he has the distinction of being the only Shreveport man to have played in the famous Pasadena Rose Bowl. While a member of Tulane Greenies. he distinguished himself as a half-back and saw action in the Tulane-University South California game of New Year's Day-1932. We are indeed fortunate in having ,lim Hodgins back at Byrd-actively connected with our athletic program as an assistant coach. I14-91 MR. When the 1935 Byrd Yellow Jackets lost their first game of the season to Port Arthur, Texas, Shreveporters in general and Byrd fans in particular could see nothing ahead but a disastrous season. Nearly all the mainstays of the 1934- state championship team were missing, and in addition to this handicap the squad was being handled by a new coaching staff. Imagine the amazement of these same fans when the Jackets did an 'cabout facev after their loss to Port Arthur, and swept through eleven more games, most of them against the toughest sort of opposition, to a glorious climax in trounc- ing the Jesuits of New Orleans, 19-0, to win the state cham- pionship for the second successive year and the fourth time in a period of six years! Most of the credit for the remarkable record of the 1935 Jackets goes to Coach Lee Dobson, himself a former Jacket, who developed a championship team in his first year as head coach, with only three regulars left from the previous year,s team as a nucleus. He was smart enough not to depart from a system with which the boys, were already familiar, added a few variations to lend deception to the attack, and incessantly drilled into his charges two things which every good team must have-effective blocking and sure tackling. Coach Dob- son had two able assistants in Coaches Sage and Cox, and the co-operation which existed between these three was reflected in the spirit of the team. The 1935 team played before much larger crowds than in previous years, due not only to the interest in the team but also to the fact that all the home games were at night. This was Byrd's first venture with the flood lights, and the fi- nancial success assures their retention for the future. T ' 5 ft'!j 513, uct ra-,rw The Byrdmen were really not in shape for the Port Arthur game. Several of the regu- lars had been out for practice only a couple of days, and the superior condition of the Texas team soon made itself evident. ' When the Jackets took on the Little Rock Tigers in their own lair the next week, they looked like a different team. Coach Dobson let the regulars run up a lead of 22-13, and then sent in reserves for the last quarter. The Tigers passed their way to two touchdowns against the reserves in the last five minutes of the game. The Deliidder Dragons proved to be quite harmless the next week and the Jackets rolled up a score of 56-0. The visitors put up a game fight, but they couldn't stem the tide of Jacket touchdown. On the next Friday night Byrd played its first game against a North Louisiana oppon- ent, and had no trouble in defeating Winnfield, 28-0. The Minden Crimson Tide flowed into Shreveport the next week, but ebbed back to Minden und-er a 24-6 defeat, scoring on a pass in the last minute of the game. The Jackets, points were accounted for by three touchdowns, and three extra points and a field goal from Harvard Karpes, educated toe. Then came the stretch of four games that everyone knew would make or break the Jackets. Homer, Bolton, Ouachita Parish, and Haynesville on successive Fridays! Any one of these four was bad medicine, and taking them all without a break looked like asking a little too much. Yet the Jackets took them, and took them decisively. Homer saved a white-washing by scor- ing on the last play of the game, making the score 14-63 Bolton started off with a bang, receiv- ing the kickoff and marching to a touchdown in five plays, but then wilted under the Jacketsy steady drive and lost by 21-6, Ouachita Parish, although losing by 31-0, really put up as tough a fight as any teams on the Jackets' schedule-the Byrdmen just caught them napping in the second quarter and ran up 31 points before the Lions woke up, but the other three quarters were really hard goingg Haynesville couldn't stand the pressure and Went down under a defeat of 21-8, with Jabbo Stells' 5' two jaunts of 65 yards each inflicting the most damage. The Jackets then celebrated Thanksgiving by taking Fair Parks' Indians into camp 21-0. Then while waiting for the South Louisiana teams to produce a title candidate, the Jackets turned up for the championship game by trimming Marshall, Texas, 27-6, in the first game played between these in about twelve years. The Jesuits Blue Jays of New Orleans fin ally emerged as the South Louisiana champions, and on the Saturday before Christmas the Jackets and Jays met in Tulane Stadium in New Or- leans. The Byrdmen seemed to suffer from stage fright in the first quarter and fumbled every time they got the ball, but toward the end of the period their offense started clicking and it was all over for the Jays. uJabbo broke loose for a 40 yard run for one touchdown and caught a sensational pass from Crow for another, and Jack Abney pounded a third score across with a series of devastating line smashes. The final score was 19-0, and the Jackets had another championship. amiga Maw V I HOWELL 6JABBO,, STELL, Quarterback r i L 1 .labbo made the All-North Louisiana, All-State and All-Southern, and if there were such a thing as an All-American high school team, his name would surely top the list. A whirling dervish when carrying the ball, a brilliant strategist, and marvelous on the defense. He is truly an ideal gridiron performer. JACK ABNEY, F ullback This boy hits a line like the well known battering ram, and is one of the hardest tacklers the .lackets have ever had. He saved his best game of the season until the last one, and then how he did nail those Jesuits! CLINT MCCAIN, Tackle Clint's fine play earned him a position on the All-North Louisiana team. He was consistently good, and is expected to make a strong bid for the All-State next season. Clint is the type of player that every coach likes to have. ASWELL STELL, End Aswell turned out to be one of the greatest ends the Jackets have ever produced. He had everything-speed, power, blocking, tackling, and above all, a wonderful competitive spirit. Aswell did nearly all the punt' ing in addition to his other duties. HSNOOKYH PADGETT, Center This boy made All-North Louisiana and the second All-State, and fans of this section are still wondering how he could have been left off the first team. Snooky was a sure passer and a fine blocker, and it was a joy to see him back up the line on defense. LETTER MEN HARVEY KARPE, Guard Karpe kept up the tradition of fine Jacket guards. He led interference on many plays, played a fine defensive game, and ran up a string Of thirty successful kicks for extra points out of thirty-three tries. All-North Louisiana and All-State. ROBERT CROW, Hal fback When it came to hurling the pigskin to a fast moving receiver, Crow was without a peer. Red was equally as good on pass defense, and a hard driving, slippery, runner. Never will we forget the great game he played against the Jesuits. ERSKINE BEST, Guard This other half of the Cold Dust Twins alternated at left guard with his pal, Larry, and always gave a fine account of himself. His per- formance was particularly fine in the Haynesville and Jesuit games. LARRY WILLIS, Guard Playing his first year as a regular, Larry performed with all the skill and poise Of a veteran and successfully plugged the big hole left by the graduation of John Hugh Smith. He has the spirit that makes football players. WAYNE MORGAN, Tackle Wayne played good football in every game, but shone with particular brilliance against the old rivals, Haynesville. He was a fighter all the way, and if necessary could he used in any position in the line. 1 I LETTER IVIEN JEFF NEWMAN, Halfback Little Jeff was one of the fastest boys on the squad and could always be relied upon to do a good job when relieving one of the other backs. He graduated at mid-term, and is slated to be one of the stars of the Centenary Gentlemen in a year or two. MOULTON STOREY, End Hi-Hi was another reason why the coaches never worried about the end positions. He was the best pass receiver on the squad, and a good defensive boy. The team will suffer through his loss by graduation. GUY FEDUCIA, Halfback Rusty packed more power and fight in a small frame than it is possible to believe. His unerring blocking cleared the way for many long runs, and if an opposing hall carrier poked his head through the line on Feducia's side, it was just too had for opposition. BICKHAM DICKSON, Guard Bick has the size and spirit, and a little more experience will make him a wonderful guard. He is the only letter man returning at that posi- tion. and he is expected to be a real star next season. LEON CANDELLA, Center Schnozzola was a fine center and would have been a regular on any team that didn't have Padgett. Coaches and fans are counting on him to do big things this year. O'ris RAINER, End This boy turned out to be one of the greatest surprises of the season, but a very pleasant surprise. Without any previous experience he was put in the game in an emergency and made good from the start. I 'nw LETTER MEN CHARLES HANKINS, Tackle Hank was a very aggressive player, and although a little light for a tackle position, was the fastest boy on the squad. His fine playing in the Little Rock game. after lVlOrgan's injury, saved the day for the Jackets. GORDON STANSBURY, Tackle This big fellow was a transfer from El Dorado, and the Jackets' only wish is that he had come here sooner. He was a great defensive player, but a trick knee hampered his play on the offense. LELAND GUICE, End Cy played a smart, heads up game, and was one of the team's best pass receivers. He had a had break in the form of an early season injury, but he stayed in there and battled just the same. GRIFFIN CARPENTER, Halfback 6'Cue Ball transferred to Byrd from Bossier City, and although he was handicapped throughout the season by injuries, had lots Of football ability and was a great help to the Jackets. KENNETH MCGOLDRICK, Tackle An idea of this bOy's size may he gained from his nick-name, Graf Zeppelin. He is very active for one of such poundage, and wrecked many a play. The other Jackets were always glad when they didn t have to scrimmage against him. LEO BIRD, H al fback Leo got away for long runs in all the Junior Jacket games, and always made a good showing when Coach put him in a first team game. He is a very elusive runner, and is expected to win a regular berth next season. 11 -1 tiiif if if 535521, LETTER MEN JOHN LINSDAY, End Although listed as an end, Fish played just a.hout as much in the backfield, and Coach Dobson plans to use him as a back next season. He has lots of natural ability and all he needs is more experience. KENNETH Losisv, F wllback The Jackets have had some hard driving fullbacks in the past, but never have they had one who packed more power in his line smasher than Losey. When he hits an opposing line, something has to give way. Bnoox GARRETT, End This boy, teamed up with Killen at the other end, gave the regu'ars many a tough afternoon in scrimmage. He will lie back next season and great things are expected of him. JACK KILLEN, End Jack was one of the real stars of the Junior Jackets. and is a great pros' pect for this year's team. There isn't a harder worker anywhere, and the whole team profits hy his example. CARROLL HUDSON, End This was Carrol's last year, and he made it a good one for the Jackets. He was handicapped by had eyesight, hut there wasn't a harder fighter on the squad. CTIARIJCS llfNlI'liR, Tackl JR ALBERT XYAl,'I'UX, Tackle. WEISS l1581 Under the able coaching of lVlr. J. R. Weiss, the Byrd Fresh- man football team compiled the enviable record of winning six games of the eight played. Oil City was the only team to take the measure of the Freshman during the entire season, taking two games by the scores of 13-0 and 7-6. The Freshies won twice from Lou- isiana Avenue School, 19-0 and 13-7, best Claiborne Avenue by 13-0 and 12-6, defeated Creswell 21-0, and won from Alexander 19-13. The Freshman Squad composed of boys too light to go out for the varsity squad, with the team averaging about 120 pounds. The training and experience they received will prove valuable and sev- eral bright prospects for the Jackets were 'suncoveredi' during the season. Eugene Russ at fullback was the most consistent player on the team, and will be ready to step in faster company as soon as he gains a little weight. The line-up used for most games was as follows: Center, King Huffmang guards, Jules Dreyfuss and Jack Hollowayg tackles, Tom Kurtz and Baron Johnsg ends, John Meagher and Eugene Trahang quarterback, Fred O,Neillg halfbacks, James Porter and Bobby Lindseyg fullback, Eugene Russ. At the close of the regular season the Yellow Jackets had chalked up ten victories against five setbacks and were the possessors of the North Louisiana Baseball Championship Cup, by virtue of their victories at the Louisiana State Normal Rally. Bob Crow was the outstanding hurler on the squad. Harmon Kurtz, the only other pitcher from the 1935 squad, could be depended on to do a good job while on the mound. Caskey, and Youngblood, two new men out for Varsity positions, rounded out the pitching staff. James Hendricks, a husky, hard hitting newcomer, took up the back-stopping position and made a dependable catcher. The infield found Jere Uverdyke holding down first base in veteran style, Leon Candella at the keystone, Bobby Wyche playing snappy and almost errorless ball at short, and Ken- neth Losey on the bat corner. This line-up gave the Jackets a hard hitting, heads-up playing infield. ln the outfield, Griffin Carpenter was found ably covering left, being moved over to the centerfield position when Crow was doing mound duty. Guy Feducia and Wayne Morgan were in the starting line-up for the other two outfield posts. Charles Armistead was the utility player, playing consistent ball at any position. The Louisiana State Normal Rally held at Natchitoches found the Yellow Jackets at their best, thereby earning another trophy for our trophy case and also wearing the title of North Louisiana High School Baseball Champions for 1936. l160l Lgjnafzigofi Eugene Sentell.
