By-Hi 1982 Vol. 38 Byron Community High School Byron, IL 61010 The Dawn of a New Era has emerged on the horizon for Byron High School and the Byron community. Gone are the days of the old building — now a rejuvenated middle school. On August 28, 1981, Byron High School students found themselves in a brand new (but not quite finished) eight-million- dollar-plus complex that offers such potential for the future that it may be years before we fully realize what we have. When we entered these new halls for the first time, teachers and students alike found the vastness and luxury of our new surroundings difficult to comprehend. We wandered around the halls looking for classrooms that seemed miles apart. We peered through the construction at the gymnasium, the pool, the theatre, the racketball courts in awe. Our feelings towards the new building were very mixed during those first few weeks of school. On one hand, we anticipated the start of a new school year, and we felt the excitement of what the year could be. On the other hand, the building seemed strange and unfriendly. It didn't feel as if it were “our school. But as the days went by, we began to adjust and became familiar with the all-new BHS. We began to realize the old days were gone. There is a new promise that the Byron school system holds for the community of Byron and its students. There is a new, future-looking spirit entering the atmosphere now at Byron. All senses have been tuned to the new era that has dawned for Byron High School students. The beginning of the new era is this year, nineteen hundred and eighty-two Introduction — 1 2 — Beth Kohler and Gina Musso (upper right) get the scoop from Lana Revels between classes (Lower right) John Butorka displays his good study habits (Below) Chuck Jones makes a move during a chess match with Andrew Jacobson. Homecoming 1981 was a busy week at Byron High School. Home- coming was celebrated with Pajama and Sweat Suit day. Cowboy day, College T-shirt day, Bib-and-Hat day, and the traditional Or- ange-and-Black day. On Thursday, the seniors were let out at noon to collect wood for the bonfire. At six o'clock, the snake dance made its way to the football field, where the tug-of-war was held. Proving to be the strongest were the senior boys and the sopho- more girls. Following that, it was announced that Dave Westbrook and Dawn Winterton were the '81 King and Queen. The spirit stick was won by the sophomores, at a pep assembly held Friday. Winning floats in the homecoming parade were the senior class and Spanish Club. The Tigers met the Forreston Cardi- nals that night but unfortunately both teams lost. The finale of the week was the dance held in the Middle School Gym. The music was provided by “Sweet Feelings.
