The 1980 Varsity Wrestling team reached many goals this year. Ron Henry became Byron's first champion of the Stillman Valley Holiday Tournament. The team took three people down state for the second year in a row. Chuck Bingham had the most wins ever in a single season (35-5). This year's MVP was Chuck Bingham. Most Improved Player went to Kerry Sugden. a state qualifier. Ron Henry had the most take-downs (38). and Chuck Bingham had the most pins. The 1980 co-captains were Ron Henry (119 lbs.), and Chuck Bingham (Hwt). Both went down- state. The other State Qualifier was Kerry Sugden (105) with a record of 28-11-1. Byron’s confer- ence record was 4-1. Their overall record was IO-II-I. In the Morrison Tournament, Byron placed fourth. They placed ninth in Stillman, fourth in Polo, sixth in Amboy, fifth in Districts, sixth in Sectionals, and thirtieth in State. Upper Left, Steve Carter as the aggressor, but not for tong! Fresh-Soph Wrestling The 1980 F-S season was a success. They had a very large F-S team this year, 18 in all. John Moolway had the best record (18-7). Next, came David Henry with 12-7. The F-S group has learned moves that two years ago, our seniors are doing, and they are going them well , stated head wrestling coach Gary Hosier.
