■ ■ y C..-W $£?. v-iS f;- ?ift58?3S 3P!5u. • •.' ,' r VOLLE YB ALI mary hayden sacrifices to save a point. am from year to year the competition a very challenging year which began with a pre-season invitational round-robin tournament, our girls placed third out of teams, as the season progressed, so did the ability of the girls to work together, this led them to a third-place finish in the conference with a record of nine wins and five losses and a first-place district championship. honorable mention was given to mary hayden as high scorer with 178 points, betty boehm had the most spikes with 68 and deb tudor had the most assists with 83. the mid-northern conference added something new to volleyball this year, the all conference team, two of our girls, betty boehm and deb tudor made the team and jackie deming received special mention. the tigers readily improved throughout the season and finished as a tough team, next year looks very promising as another cham- pionship year, good job girls and good luck next year. jackie deming sends over a bump. 22

duel meet results us opponent '-1 46 durand 1 20 stillman 4 32 ashton 2 36 galena 2 20 erie 3 19 jefferson 4 48 forreston 2 23 Winnebago 3 39 Stockton 2 18 ster. newman 4 44 mt. morris 1 46 Oregon 2 29 hononegah 3 30 rochelle 1 34 auburn 2 55 rkfd. west 1 16 hononegah 4 16 jefferson 4 42 polo 2 20 dakota 3 36 morrison 3 36 Oregon 2 20 Winnebago 2 45 marian cen. 1 49 mt. morris 1 the 1978-79 varsity wrestling squad, led by co-captains mark jones and gary wil- marth, has a lot to be proud of. although the squad was a small one, it accomplished many first-time achievements. the overall duel meet record of the season was 14-10-1. the grapplers placed 2nd out of 3 teams at the hononegah team tournament, and 5th out of 8 teams at the ashton in- vitational tournament, the season ended with fine showings at three ihsa tournaments, at the district meet, the tigers finished 3rd out of 10 teams and seven outstanding indi- vidual performances were turned in. chuck bingham, mark jones, and gary wilmarth took first place honors, kent sugden took 3rd-place honors, and joe haynes, ron henry, and kerry sugden took fourth-place honors, the grapplers then placed 4th out of 20 teams at the sectional meet, qualifying for state were mark jones and gary wilmarth, who both took first place honors at sectionals, and chuck bingham, who took second place honors at sectionals, these three wrestlers turned in fantastic showings at the state meet and managed to finish, as a team, 4th in state, individually, gary wilmarth took second place in the 119-lb.-weight class, mark jones took third place in the 155-lb.- weight class, and chuck bingham took fourth place at heavyweight. at the awards banquet, mark jones was given recognition as the most valuable wres- tler, had the most takedowns for the season - 57, and earned the most team points - 167. gary wilmarth was recognized as the most improved wrestler and chuck bingham had the most pins for the season - 18. 24
