1979 BY-HI 1979 BY-HI 1979 BY-HI 1979 BY-HI 1979 BY-HI introduction games (sports) 16 smiles (seniors) good times (activities) 52 older faces (faculty) 66 familiar faces (classes) 72 togetherness (organizations) 92 a commercial break (ads) 112 conclusion 128 4 suddenly they're gone, they've ended, those high school years that seemed to stretch eternally before us are now like something we have dreamed. pillared and arched, the building stands but shelters others in its walls, we shall not sit within its rooms or laugh or shout in crowded halls. the friends we've met and gained and lost, the games we've cheered and lost and won, the sorrows and the joys we've shared with classmates now are past and done. now we have left, but those four years have marked our minds indeli- bly. they're out. they will remain with us through our lives, in memory. 7 friends 10 look not to yesterday but to tomorrow, for tomorrow is a new beginning. beginnings ... years fade beginnings, they are either unimportant or we are too small to remember them, but most seniors before receiving their diplomas pause and remember one special beginning. a large brick building with tall windows, heavy doors that would not open with little tugs, the warmth of a mothers hand. the emptiness and confusion when she was gone------we were alone, alone in a room of strange children; children whose blurred images and partial names occur in flashes, faces seen everyday, faces seen once and then never seen again, we were alone together, we learned to laugh together and to cry togeth- er. we learned to read, write, and reason together. it was a beginning----those first faltering steps, but it was only the preface to the real beginning, at last we stand together in front of the world; a world with doors of opportunity that only yield to the pressure of a determined, prepared hand, this is the beginning. 14 17 the byron high school football team had a very successful season, the tigers finished the season at six wins and three losses, they were four and three in the conference which was good for a third- place finish. byron was in the running for a conference championship until the last two weeks of conference play when they were snuffed out by playoff-bound polo and Oregon. the tigers were led by a senior-oriented offensive line and the hard running of chuck bingham, tim johnson, and gary zoet. the tigers placed five members on the mid-northern all-conference team, they were seniors alan bain, miks carter and gary zoet. ju- niors were chuck bingham and tracy nelson, all-area recognition was given to mike stine as a place kicker, and chuck bingham was accorded honorable mention as a running back. co-captains were alan bain and gary zoet. the team voted gary zoet as most valuable player, and gene dalton received recogni- tion as most improved player. dean wolfe fights off a tackle. 9 % t tfW chuck charges through opponents most valuable player, gary zoet. most Improved player, gene dalton. , tigers huddle up for next play. ■ !■■■ ... coach stine cheers his team on. • MIN. football team had a rough start this year, they practiced hard, fought hard, and played hard, no matter what the scoreboard said, they played with enthusiasm. the cubs finished the season with a conference win-loss record of two and seven, high scorer for the team was jim hummer with 51 points, jim was also high rusher with 600 yards and high tackier went to rick snodgrass with 66 tackles. by the end of the season the fresh-soph team had finally begun to get it all together and proved they were a skilled team with much abil- ity. good job guys and good-luck next year. cubs get caught in this year with most of the other conference fresh-soph teams, our girls worked very hard and showed great Improvement throughout the season, the Inexperience of the freshmen on the team eventually faded with practice and by following the fine example set by the sophomores. the cub team finished the season with a conference record of eight wins and six losses, many of the matches lost were very close and went into three games. high scorer for the girls was paula Zimmerman with 183 points, paula also had the most spikes with 32 and linda boehm had the most assists with 33. with the point. am from year to year the competition a very challenging year which began with a pre-season invitational round-robin tournament, our girls placed third out of teams, as the season progressed, so did the ability of the girls to work together, this led them to a third-place finish in the conference with a record of nine wins and five losses and a first-place district championship. honorable mention was given to mary hayden as high scorer with 178 points, betty boehm had the most spikes with 68 and deb tudor had the most assists with 83. the mid-northern conference added something new to volleyball this year, the all conference team, two of our girls, betty boehm and deb tudor made the team and jackie deming received special mention. the tigers readily improved throughout the season wrestling squad, led by co-captains mark jones and gary wil- marth, has a lot to be proud of. although the squad was a small one, it accomplished many first-time achievements. the overall duel meet record of the season was 14-10-1. the grapplers placed 2nd out of 3 teams at the hononegah team tournament, and 5th out of 8 teams at the ashton in- vitational tournament, the season ended with fine showings at three ihsa tournaments, at the district meet, the tigers finished 3rd out of 10 teams and seven outstanding indi- vidual performances were turned in. chuck bingham, mark jones, and gary wilmarth took first place honors, kent sugden took 3rd-place honors, and joe haynes, ron henry, and kerry sugden took fourth-place honors, the grapplers then placed 4th out of 20 teams at the sectional meet, qualifying for state were mark jones and gary wilmarth, who both took first place honors at sectionals, and chuck bingham, who took second place honors at sectionals, these three wrestlers turned in fantastic showings at the state meet and managed to finish, as a team, 4th in state, individually, gary wilmarth took second place in the 119-lb.-weight class, mark jones took third place in the 155-lb.- weight class, and chuck bingham took fourth place at heavyweight. at the awards banquet, mark jones was given recognition as the most valuable wres- tler, had the most takedowns for the season - 57, and earned the most team points - 167. gary wilmarth was recognized as the most improved wrestler and chuck bingham had the most pins for the season - 18. 24 it looks most - most mark works for a hold on his oppo 25 the 1978-79 fresh-soph grapplers had an excellent season, the cubs finished the season with a duel meet record of 5-3. a 4th place was earned by the squad at the Winnebago tournament, kerry sugden placed 1st, dave osadjan placed 2nd, matt haynes, rich swanson, and denny gambrel all placed 3rd, and john siebken placed 4th. at the amboy tournament, the team again finished 4th while dave osadjan took 1st place, kerry sugden and rich swanson both took 2nd places, and steve carter, matt haynes, jim henry, and grant johnson all took 3rd place honors, the squad did not place at the ashton tournament but several grapplers earned indi- vidual awards, kerry sugden earned another 2nd place, matt haynes earned a 3rd place, and jim henry and john third place, the cubs had many exciting games, climaxing with a 62-58 victory over conference champion, Winnebago. captain eric hintz was the leading scorer with a total of 360 points for the season, the team shot an exceptional 53% from the field. the freshmen on the squad gained their experience in the freshmen games, they finished their season with a 3-8 record, ex- citement is promised for play, the girls showed a lot of improvement and more aggressive- ness from the year before, they understood the game of basketball better and so they were able to learn the more difficult fun- damentals of the game, the girls worked hard to improve, all the girls had the skill to play basketball and they worked very well together as a team, the tigers had more determination to win this year and they worked hard to prove this determina- tion to each other. high scoring honors went to peggy zim- mermann with 96 points, free throw award and captain award went to deb tudor. betty boehm, with a total of 133 rebounds, led with the most offensive and defensive re- bounds. next year is looking even better for the tigers. 30 peggy zimmermann - most valu able player, deb tudor - captain and player showed great improvement throughout the year, there were ten girls out for the team and each one of them worked very hard, the girls showed a lot of interest and enthusiasm and were ea- ger to learn and develop the fundamen- tals of basketball. high scorer for the cubs was paula zimmermann with a total of 88 points, penny beauchem was high defensive re- bounder with 65 and paula was high finished sec- ond In both the league and the league tournament to the stlllman valley cardinals. the young tigers finished strong in the league tour- nament and lost a close 2-0 decision to the senior- dominated cardinals in the final. the tigers were paced by tom bi I leter, saul schoon, and al bain In the hitting department, jeff johnson was the mainstay on the pitcher's mound and finished with a 4-4 win-loss record and a respectable 3.04 era. season highlights included a game-winning homerun by junior al bain, gary zoet's one-hit shut-out of the forreston cardinals, and two superb team, the team broke four school records, finished 6th at the district meet, 5th at the conference meet, and sent three girls to the state meet. betty boehm set a new high jump record with a jump of 5 2'1 and a new 440 yd. dash record with a run of 59.9 the 440 yd. relay team, consisting of lori johnson, donna boehm, mary hayden, and sandy oltmanns, set the new record at 54.77, and the 880 yd. medley relay team, consisting of lori johnson, mary hayden, sandy oltmanns and betty boehm, set that record at 1:56.8. at the district meet betty qualified for the state meet in the high jump and the 440 yd. run. she was also in the 880 yd. medley that qualified for state, peggy zim- mermann earned 6th place in the shot put, but did not qualify for state. at the state meet betty placed 6th in the were set at the beginning of the season were met and surpassed, the team consisted of many hard-working athletes. three new records were set by the '79 track team, the 4-mile relay team, which consisted of steve jaycox, gene dalton, tony logston, and row- dy adams, set a new school record at 21:26.0. the 880-relay team of gary wilmarth, eric hintz, saul schoon, and tim johnson set a new conference re- cord at 1:35.4, and the 440 relay team, the same as the 880, set a school record at 45.86. chuck bingham qualified for the state meet in the dis- cus with a throw of 150'2 , and 440 and
