LOIS HOBART Mary Hopkins once said, ,fFor everything, there is a season, turn, turn, turn. The great expectation that is anticipated upon entering the Freshman year — exploring, experimenting, and learning through mistakes — is the new season we all encouter in life's endeavors. The buds have opened, the leaves have developed, and as Sophomores in any life experience we go forward with false confidence. For haven't we overcome those faltering steps of spring? And so, with this perspective, summer fades away and autumn begins. A dim awareness comes over us as we go through our Junior year because we realize that we, too, are changing like the seasons. As is with the trees, the leaves are now no longer their garish colors of green but rather matured and be- come endowed with a new spectrum. The old leaves begin to drop as we reach the climax and prepare to begin an- other new stage. For our Senior year is one made up not only of reflections but also perceptions, not just of memories but also of foresights. For all along life's road there is a season and a purpose for every reason under God's heaven. 2 The pile Thursday afternoon. Working on the float is so frustrating! The All American Econ class. The Student Council did an excellent job in set- ting up the different dressup days. Among these were the 50's Day, Oc- cupation Day, Backwards Day, and of course, Orange-Black Day. The spirit stick, which was a tradition started by the 1975 cheerleaders, was won by the Seniors as was the G.A. A. powderpuff game and the tug of war that took place on Wednesday. On Thursday, the class of '77 collected wood all day to make the brightest fire Byron had ever seen for the pep rally that night. On Friday, the victory parade took place. The floats were beautiful and after a hard decision, the Juniors' float was chosen as first place winner. Oregon was no match for our team this year and we easily slid past them, 44-0, making our week a perfect one. On Saturday, the Homecoming dance brought the week to a climatic closing with Dana Schoon and Verne Adams being crowned Queen and King and Sweet Silver letting everyone Fly Away.' 7 Typical 6th hour studyhall Don't look so happy! An abundance of experience and few crucial injuries clearly describes this year's Fresh-Soph football team. With many sophomores coming back and a few key freshmen, the Cubs began the year with a solid ball club. But a couple of costly injuries midway through the year turned the team's momentum completely around. The 1976 Cubs finished with a respectable record of 4-3, although they never fully played up to their capability in the last four games. On defense, Gary Zoet led the team in tackles with a total of seventy-one. The outstanding leading rusher on offense was Chuck Bingham with 481 yards. Mike Eyetalis was the team's leader in pass receiving with a total of 74 yards. 12 VARSITY FOOTBALL FRONT ROW L. TO R: M. Tudor, D. Dockins, D. Ham- mond, R. Rissman, C. John- son, M. Streff. Barton, D. Reber, D. McCaslin, A. Smith, M. Becker, J. Hayden, V. Adams. A winning attitude was the difference this year as the varsity football team was in the race for the conference title until the last game of the season. Although they didn't quite reach their goal, they tied for second place along with Winnebago. The Tigers ended the year with a 6-1-1 record, and their only loss came to conference champion Forreston. The next few years look very promising with many awaiting players coming up from the fresh-soph team. This year's most valuable player was Dave Jackson and Russ Groves was the most improved player. Verne Adams, Dave Jackson, and Jim Hayden were chosen All-Conference on the de- fensive unit, while Doug Reber was chosen All- Conference in the offensive backfield. Co- captains for this year were Dave Zoet and Dave Jackson. 13 Moonshine, haybales, pumpkins and streamers—where else would you find these but at the annual Sadie Hawkins dance! The day was Saturday, November 13, and attendance was up from previous years. Guys and gals danced to the music of Shotgun Rivers from WROK. During the evening, judges Kim Anderson, Kathy Ashby, Judy Dem- ing, and Michele Limberg gave first, second, and third place ribbons to Peggy Zimmerman and Steve Rissman, Cindy Reimer and Craig Meyers, and Hedii Jeter and Tim Wiltfang for corsages. Costume prizes went to Connie Behmer and Joe Bolin, Kim Cato and Dave Kampas, and Cathie Westcott and Mike Becker. The judging was followed by the traditional chase, when captured guys were taken by their dates to the Marryin Sams, Kathy Ashby and Michele Limberg. There they received wire chicken rings and certifi- cates to remind them of their hitching More dancing followed, and the F. H. A., who sponsored the dance, termed the night as very successful. 14 TIME OUT FOR GINGER PLAY CAST Howard Carol Agnes Carol Joan Carol Jeannie Carol Ginger Carol Eddie Davis Frank Reagan Renee Lukan Darcie Frye Lori Cain Kim Anderson Gary Zoet Tommy Green Liz, the maid Mr. Hoffman Mr. Wilson Jack Armstrong Cathie Westcott Randy Roberts Mike Hahn 15 The school will not allow it. Why not Dad? On November 5 and 6, the junior high auditorium was the setting for another conflict between women's lib and older traditions. A girl had actually decided to go out for varsity football; family and friends were in a general up- roar. During the play many exciting things happened, such as Howard, Ginger's father, tearing down the goal posts when Ginger first got to play. Daughter Jeannie took over her older sister Joan's part in their school play, VICTORIA REGINA. Joan, in the meantime, was having boy troubles with Eddie Davis, who was captain of the football team and not quite as good as Ginger while Ginger's boyfriend, Tommy Green, was upset about having a football player for a girlfriend. Agnes' main problem was controlling Howard, who was being pressured by the school principal, Mr. Wilson, and his banker boss, Ed Hoffman, to get Ginger out of foot- ball. At last everything was settled, and peace reigned at the Carol house when Ginger decided she'd rather be a girl after all. The play was again under the excellent direction of Kathy McLennan. 16 Be patient-only a little more. SENIORS President V. Jo Daviess County, and especially East Dubuque in the northwest portion of the county, were the first to feel the effects of the latest storm. A travelers’ advisory was issued at East Dubuque, where a three-inch snow accumulation was forecast. Wind velocity was expected to in- crease sharply during the night, setting up the same conditions for drifting along roads and highways which bogged down most of Northern Illinois and .Southern Wisconsin Wednesday. By MIKE MOONEY COMPTON - It look a while, but 12- mile corners south of Rochelle returned to normal early Thursday as travelers resumed trips interrupted by Wednesday’s blowing snow. Weather experts have called the winter of 1977 the worst since 1800. Temperatures dropped to 20 and 30 degrees below zero. When the large wind-chill factor was included, the temperature dropped even lower. Byron High School was far from being unaffected by this terrible cold spell. Probably the greatest incon- venience was frozen water pipes in many homes, which remained frozen for many weeks. ft ■ 46 48 Bi-Hi FRONT ROW L TO R: L. McCabe, Ass't. Editor; J. During football season the band kept spirits going with its lively halftime shows. In De- cember, Jr. High and High School gave a concert to the public. It went well, and afterwards the band pre- sented Mr. Johnson with a gift certificate. In March, thirty-six students went to I. H. S. A. Solo and Ensemble Contest at Kaneland. They came away with fourteen firsts, three seconds, and two thirds. At group contest in April at Oregon, the chorus barely missed a first while the band had a solid first. Also in April, the swing choir and stage band per- formed on Cabaret Night. Because of the success of the performance, both groups were asked to perform for other town organizations. In May, as their final performance of the year, the Department put on their annual Spring Concert. Senior band members were honored, and junior Dennis Dockins was given the Arion Award. Said Mr. Johnson of his students' performances, I was very pleased with the strong showing our students made because it reflects interest and dedication on their part to the music program. 11 13 Years Together FRESH-SOPH FOOTBALL WE THEY Lena-Winslow 6 12 Pecatonica 38 0 Winnebago 8 0 Mt. Led by five returning seniors, who were all lettermen, they man- aged to finish second in the Durand Holiday Tournament and also sec- ond in the Mid-Northern Confer- ence. Depth of the bench proved to play an important role all season, especially in capturing the region- al crown. This was the first time a Byron team advanced into a re- gional final. In sectional play the Tigers lost a heartbreaking game to Kaneland, which prevented their playing in a supersectional game. Coach Don Drake received hon- ors as Coach of the Year in Dis- trict Six. Dave Zoet was elected to the Durand Holiday Toumament team, and he and Jim Hayden were elected to the A11-Conference team. Zoet was also the leading scorer with 364 points followed by Hayden with 350. Steve Norup led the team in rebounds with 163. Zoet was team captain and most valuable player was Hayden. Coach Hosier This year's Byron wrestling team, under the direc- tion of new coach Gary Hosier, finished the season with a respectable overall record of 12-7 and a con- ference record of 5-2. Two freshmen had impressive records — Craig Tunnell with 5-4 and Ron Henry with 7-10. At the Mid-Northern Conference Tournament held at Stillman Valley, the Byron grapplers placed third, with A1 Smith the team's only first place winner. Gary Wilmarth, frank Johnson, Frank Reagan, and Russ Mitchell all finished second. Although no one ad- vanced to the State Tournament this year, there were three 2nd place District winners who did wrestle at Riverdale in the Sectionals: Frank Johnson at 145 lbs. , A1 Smith at 167 lbs. , and Russ Mitchell in the heavy- weight class. Four other Byron wrestlers who also placed high in the standings at Districts were Kent Sudgen, Gary Wilmarth, Brad Hagemann, and Mark Jones. Co-captains for the 1976-77 team were Frank Rea- gan and A1 Smith. Frank Johnson was chosen as most improved player and A1 Smith most valuable player. Watching the match. Winning six games and losing only to four very tough teams shows that the year was a successful one indeed. The games that were lost were close and were lost only by a few points. Mrs. Newhausen moved three sophomores, Betty Boehm, Renee McCaslin, and Patty Pendergrass up to the Varsity squad to play for Byron in the districts. Although the girls didn't win every game they played, they received experience and learned much about the game. The high scorers for the Fresh-Soph squad were Kris Linton (1.8), Kris Nelson (1.7), Jackie Deming (1.6) and Mary Hayden (1.5). They deserve a rest! 66 Varsity Volleyball FRONT ROW L TO R: D. For the sec- ond year in a row Byron won the conference champion- ship title beating Polo, Oregon, and Pecatonica. Districts were held at Dixon High School. After beating Stillman Valley and Dixon, Byron advanced into the finals against Mt. Morris. The match was disastrous for Byron and the girls came home with the second place title. It was a successful season, despite the loss and those girls really displayed Byron's colors well. Kim Cato was named most valuable player and Kim Cato (1.9), Deb Tudor (1. 7) and Renee McCas- lin (1.6) had the highest scoring averages. 67 Girls Track FRONT ROW LTOR: J. Bartkus, C. Westcott, T. Frye, J. Wolfe, P. Zimmermann, V. Hosier, J. Toth, D. Palmer. SECOND ROW: K. Nelson, K. Cato, Y. Jaquet, J. Deming, P. Boehm, P. Zimmermann, J. Noffsinger, M. Hayden, L. Holeton. THIRD ROW: Coach Cameron, S. Wilson, S. Freedlund, D. Seebruck, B. Carlson, B. Boehm, J. Deming, K. Keefer. The girls track team, coached by Mrs. Cameron, did extremely well this season. Even though the team consisted mostly of freshman and sophomore girls, the upperclassmen played a big part in winning points for the team. For the third consecutive year, Byron placed in the Landers-Loo- mis relays. In the Sterling-Newman relays, a few outstanding people set some new records for Byron: Kim Cato, 220 yd. dash — 27.0; Julie Noffsinger, long jump -- 17 3 1 2 , 80 lows -- 10.7, 110 lows — 15.4; and Betty Boehm, 440 yd. dash — 62.6, high jump — 4 10 . Districts were held at Sycamore on May 13. It was one of the toughest districts in the state, but the team still came out with two girls going down state. Betty Boehm received second place in the 440 yd. dash and although she didn't place in the high jump, she broke Xenita Zimmermann's record of 4'9 . Julie Noffsinger placed second in both 80 and 110 low hurdles. She received a third place in long jump, but unfortunately only the top two qualified for state. The Mile Relay team, which consisted of Kim Cato, Pat Boehm, Terry Frye, and Betty Boehm, received fifth place. The Mid-Northern Conference Meet was held May 17. The team received second place; Julie Noffsinger placing first in both 80 and 110 low hurdles, Betty Boehm placing second in the 440 yd. dash, Kim Cato finishing second in the 100 and 220 yd. dashes, and the mile relay team earning a third for their efforts. Overall, it was a good season, one mixed with fun and hard work. Mrs. Cameron expects a better-developed team next year as almost everyone is returning. 68 Boys Track V Lk FRONT ROW L TO R: M. He also tied the school record in the 120 yard high hurdles with a time of 15.0 seconds. Tim Johnson ran a time of 41.6 sec- onds to set a new 330 yard low hurdles record. The 440 yard relay team also tied a school record with a time of 46.5 seconds. The Fresh-soph mile relay team set a new conference record, and the Fresh-soph 100 yard dash record in the conference meet was broken by Tim Johnson with a time of 10.7 seconds. Four members participated in the State track meet at Charleston on May 27, and 28: Doug Reber, shot put; Pat Hogan, high jump; Galen Bennett, high hurdles; Chuck Bingham, discus. All week long the Seniors worked on decorating the gymnasium. In the back, the scene designed by Mary McGlinn, was one of a setting sun over an ocean. The backdrop in the front was a mod- em mural, which showed an hour glass ( with all but a few grains settled on the bottom) in the center of a blazing sun and a retiring moon. This artwork was de- signed by Kim Anderson and Scott Spencer. The traditional May Dance began at 8:00 p. m. with Debbie Mead introducing the couples as they walked down the aisle, paying respect to the 1976- 77 King and Queen, Brad Kulfalk and Lucy Debnam. Following the introductions, the 1977-78 May Dance court was announced. They were as follows: Fourth attendants, Kim Cato and Jeff Meline; third at- tendants, Kim Anderson and Frank Reagan; second at- tendants, Cathie Westcott and Dave Zoet; first at- tendants, Dana Schoon and Verne Adams. The 1977- 78 May Dance Queen was Connie Camling escorted by King Jim Hayden. The junior and sophomore girls then performed the traditional Maypole Dance, choreographed by Pam Drake. When the dance was completed, the new King and Queen led the Grand March. Music for the Grand March was provided by Sweet Silver . Spectators as well as the participants were caught up in the romantic tones. For the Seniors, the formal and the Post Prom that followed, created a memorable night. As the theme Time in a Bottle suggested, they realized just how fast Prom week, Pfom night, and their Senior year had slipped away. 74 A BOTTLE Junior and Sophomore girls and the Maypole Just announced — 1977 May Dance King and Queen The Grand March Faculty at the Jr. -Sr. Banquet One-way traffic Tug a little harder, Jeff Relaxing for a while Taking it easy Library work is never done Higher!! For 83 seniors, their long- awaited graduation ceremony took place on Tuesday, June 7, 1977. The class was honored for its ac- complishments in high school. Special honors went to valedicto- rian Jim Hayden and salutatorian Jane Baker. The large audience was enter- tained by a brass quartet made up of Gordy Skogsberg, Debbie See- bruck, Dennis Dockins, and Kelly Reagan. Diplomas were then presented by school board members, and each graduate also received a rose. Then the newly graduated young people, in their blue and white caps and gowns, walked out the doors of B.H.S., to new begin- nings somewhere else.
