The Tigers finished with a 2-7 record overall and were 1-6 in con- ference play. ■O 4 The Tigers' co-captains this year were Gene Smith and Rod Stegall. Stegall was also selected as the team's most valuable player and a member of the all-conference team. Mike Wilmarth was selected as the team's most im- proved player. Leading the Tigers in rushing was Gene Smith, who picked up 274 yards on the ground in 85 carries. Rod Stegall led in tackles with a total of 140. Ste- gall also led the team in interceptions with 4. The team was made up mostly of Juniors, which gives the school a hope of a better team next year. Overall they had one win and seven losses. All the Byron fans can hope for is better luck in the future and perhaps with a little more experience a better record can be had. For the season, quarterback Jim Landis completed 43 out of 83 passes for 507 yards. Running back Todd Tallman rushed for 507 yards and sophomore de- fenseman Fred Carter made 62 tackles. When will this end? Is that the finish line? These are just a few of the sayings that could be heard from the Byron- Cross-Country runners, as they ran through another fall over all the area countryside. Byron's Cross-Country team had a rough year but gave it all they had, which is very commendable. Individual accomplishments are as follows; in the Oregon Frosh Open three of Byron's team members did excep- tionally well as they placed high among a field of seventh runners. Brad Haye was a medal winner with a tenth place finish. Varsity letters were given to the following runners: Mickey Newhausen, who was elected captain. Brad Haye, who was elected MVP, Dave Gin- ger and Randy Dietrich. MEET PLACE MEET PLACE Mt. Blackburn, 8 The Tigers suffered through a losing season this year, com- piling a record of 19 losses with only 5 wins. They received last place in the conference with a 13 loss and 1 win tally but were consoled by a second place finish in the Durand Holiday Tournament and a berth in the semi-finals of the IHSA sectionals. John Blackburn was voted team captain, and Ron Toops was voted most valuable player for the season. Ron also lead all scorers with 324 points and lead the team in rebounds on both the offensive and defensive boards. He was also selected for the all-Tournament team at Durand. The outlook for future teams looks bright, however, as Coach Drake chose to bring up two underclassmen to compete on the Varsity team. Jeff Meline, a freshman, finished the season with 197 points, and Jim Landis, a sophomore, finished with 98 points. Commendable performances were also turned in by Gary Anspach, Randy Garman, Mike Landis, and Ric Toops. ■d FRESH-SOPH BASKETBALL FRONT ROW, L TO R: Coach Hoffmeister, R. Brown, J. Cunningham, S. The Cubs completed their season this year with a record of 10 wins and 12 losses, a successful showing for an in- experienced team. The record did not tell the complete story, however, as many of their losses were by narrow margins. Team captain and Most Valuable Player was Brad Haye, who also led the team in total points scored, with 291 for the season. Brad also led the team in offensive rebounds, but center Steve Norup recovered the most missed shots on defense. The team shot an average of 38.5 percent from the floor and 52.5 percent from the charity stripe. Letter winners on the squad included Haye, Norup, Jeff Cunningham, Don Hughes, Dave Zoet, Joe Kean, Fred Carter, Todd Tallman, and Randy Pederson. Byron fans can expect an even better record when this team hits the varsity level of competition. 9 WRESTLING FRONT ROW, L TO R: V. Adams, A. Smith, R. Mitchell, J. Barton, J. Bolin. SECOND ROW: B. The Byron Varsity Wrestlers completed a successful sea- son this year, compiling a record of 6-6-1, an excellent showing for a relatively inexperienced team. Impressive individual records were also achieved this season. Rod Stegall, Hwt., compiled a 22-2 total and also received third place in the State Wrestlers Tournament. Mike Wil- marth advanced to the sectionals and, while not qualify- ing for the state championships, compiled a record of 19-9. A good performance was also turned in by Gene Smith, who was 18-4 for the season. This year's Fresh-Soph wrestlers also fared well by com- pleting the season with a winning record. 10 11 CHEERLEADERS Varsity, FRONT ROW L TO R: K. Cacciatore, K. Parks, SECOND ROW: J. Jeffrey, D. Byron High School sported its largest track team in the school's history this season and it seems that size makes a winner. The team placed 3rd in the Conference, 1st in the ShanLan relays, 2nd in the Red Devils relays, 1st in the Lisle Invitational, and made respectable showings in the Forreston Relays. The team also did well in several other meets. A large number of juniors and seniors gave the team the depth necessary to win, and the junior squad gives a bright outlook for future teams. Most Valuable Player was Gene Mead. Ron Toops was voted team captain. An extra accom- plishment this year was Gene Mead's excellent performance in the 440 which won him a berth in the state track meet. BASEBALL FRONT ROW L TO R: T. Tallman, J. Landis, D. Leary, J. Summer baseball is in its second season at BHS, and this season has the potential of being a very exciting one. The team is larger than a year ago at this time, which marks a steady improvement. The three seniors who are looked upon for leadership are Mike Landis, Doug Leary, and Ron Toops. Landis is in his fourth year of baseball at BHS, while Leary is in his third and Toops his second. Mr. Nauman has expressed high hopes for his team, but, due to presstime deadlines, we are unable to print any results for the 1974 baseball season at BHS. 14 SENIORS Track, FRONT ROW L TO R: J. Preceding the game, however, was a week of pep-filled events, including the snake dance on Thursday and the large, spirited homecoming parade after early dismissal on Friday. As usual, the young and enthusiastic freshmen worked diligently to put together a fantastic first-place float, with the not-so-diligently-working sophomores com- ing in second, and juniors third. OH!, and not to for- get, the seniors, who tediously prepared to bring a fourth place float into the contest. The stunts this year were unusually funny, with the German club stunt coming in first and Library club placing second. Despite the very enthusiastic week, the unfortunate Tigers could not manage to upset or even score on the Winnebago Indians, as the 47-0 tally showed. Al- though everyone was depressed, the homecoming dance, with the theme Colour My World, went on and went well. The highlight, of course, being the coronation of King Ron Toops and Queen Shelley Eickman who reigned over our 1973 homecoming. Library Club Stunt -- Second Place 46 SPEECH- IN ACTION Speaking and acting may seem easy— until you do it in front of a class full of eager, young speakers. But, under the guidance of speech coach Mr. Me Names, the speech team did ex- ceptionally well this year, defeating many teams which before had been close competitors. 48 Drill Team Drill Team, FRONT ROW, L TO R: K. Junior-Senior Banquet The Junior-Senior Banquet was once again a huge success this year. Most of the students and many of the faculty at- tended the annual dinner and all present were entertained by senior Mike Wonzong's speaking ability. Additional speaking was done by juniors Val Cline and Mike Hayden. Class wills and prophecies were mimeographed and handed out at the end of the affair to top off an enjoyable evening. 49 LIFE WITH FATHER o ________ The senior play this year was Life With Father by Clarence Day. Miss Me Lennon again did a good job in molding the cast into a fine and entertaining group. Leads in this year's performance were Mike Wonzong as Father, and Nancy Hoffman who played the part of Vinnie. In addition Mary DiGiovanni appeared as Annie, Mike Landis, as Clarence, Craig Meyers as John, Brian Henson as Whitney, Brent Sugden as Harlan, Carla Shulz as Margaret, Debbie Moats as Cora, Kim Adams as Mary Skinner, Bob Kufalk as Rev. Lloyd, Rhonda Ericson as Delia, Lori Brown as Nora, Danny Falk as Dr. Humphreys, Gene Smith as Dr. Somers, and Julie Cacciatore as Maggie. SADIE HAWKINS Noise, noise, and more noise was again the main ingredient of the FHA-sponsored Sadie Hawkins Dance. The rustic setting of the Junior High Gym was again the scene of a great deal of Rock and Roll Boogie. Meanwhile the gym gained a few more cracks in the ceiling and the walls as a result of the massive reverberations. The crowd num- bered many, which was a defi- nite improvement over a year ago. A good time was had by all. 53 MAY DANCE This year's theme for the May Dance was Magical Mystery Tour. The BHS gym was transformed into a dance floor for an evening with miles of crepe paper streamers and a mural inspired by the Beatles' hit Yellow Submarine. Connie Koenck and Ron Toops were crowned Queen and King this year and they along with their court, reigned over the evening's festivities.
