G.A.A. — Fun, exercise, com- petition! Bike hikes to the Terrace; bulls eye in archery; bowling tour- naments and swimming at the Byron House; sledding at Lake Louise. And parties--the initiation party and the slumber party. And work—selling candles to help pay for activities. And Volleyball practice which paid off in both teams posting a 5- 1 record in competition with other schools. A big year--a year to remember. Homecoming is a time that should live in the lives of all who participated in the proceedings. The second annual girl's football game was rained out. The bonfire had to meet with certain specifi- cations, but it didn't. The seniors held the first hot dog and marsh- mallow roast after the fire had burned down. About that fire; it was composed of some of the strangest materials. Isn't that right, seniors? This year something different happened at the varsity football game; we beat Pec 32 to 6. May- be last year's team should take notes. The dance was the gala event that it should be. Cindy McGhee was crowned Queen and Russell Crull King. Ah, it was a time to remember. SPEECH CLUB IN ACTION The speech team did an excellent job last year. But when last year's seniors graduated they took with them the majority of this team. In spite of this and with the addition of much hard work and some fast talking the team grew. Not only did the team grow, but they were good at their tasks. They did not win any meets, but they did get third at the district. Not bad for a team full of rookies. To top off all the good times of the year, the team traveled down state to watch the finals of the IHSA speech tournament. What they did was unbelievable! They all stayed out of trouble! ! ! Next year's team should be a good one, but they could use your help. No one will be turned down, all applicants will be accepted. No experience necessary. Hang in there dad! One question. Will the Byron East Orphanage rise again? DRILL TEAM DRILL TEAM—FRONT ROW: J. Sugden, T. Oltmanns, J. Hahn, L. Hamer, J. Cacciatore, V. Cline, B. Blum, M. Kobel, Cap- tain. SECOND ROW: P. Eickert, B. Again Miss McLennon did a good job directing and teaching the players how to act. How she can teach a bunch of kids what to do in such a short time is unreal. The number of eligible young men asked was down from recent years. Of course the reason might have been because there wasn't any interest. The people who did go did have fun, so it was worth it to the people who went. THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD Queen Cindy McGhee and King Mark Hayden. First Attendants Jane Tallman and Russ Crull. Victories were really earned, defeats harder to bear. The season ended with a 3-4-1 record. Team Co-captains were Terry Gobin and Mark Hayden with Brian Ross M. V. P. and Greg Getzelman M.I.P. Byron was honored with four selections for All- Conference squad. Steve Tilbury, defensive corner- back; Brian Ross, offensive halfback; Russell Crull, defensive lineman; and Rod Stegall, offensive line- man. Russ Crull was also named to the Little All-State football squad. We They Milledgeville 14 14 Oregon 12 22 Forreston 16 8 S. Valley 6 26 Pecatonica 32 12 Winnebago 6 0 Mt. The Cubs seemed to have no problem adjusting into the competition of the new Mid-Northern Con- ference. A strong defense and an offense capable of the long gain were reasons for a fine 5-1-2 seasonal record. These players will undoubtedly improve in the next two years and should form a very respectable var- sity team. We They Milledgeville 12 12 Oregon 24 8 Forreston 12 0 S. I gotta run against all of those guys? or maybe, This hill sure is steep ... Thoughts similar to these may go through a Cross Country runner's mind. Byron's Cross Country team participated in a total of 10 meets, took two lsts and two 2nds. At the Polo Invitational, out of 19 teams, Byron placed 9th. The Conference meet was held at Oregon and the team finished 4th. Kent Parks was team captain and also received the Most Valuable Player award for the second year. Leary The first season of basketball in the Mid-Northern Conference proved to be filled with excitement, with most teams being very equal in strength. The Tigers led the first half of the season with six straight conference victories, and placed second in the Du- rand Holiday Tournament. From mid-season on, however, the varsity played less than their best, suffering several losses, dropping from first place to third at the season's close, and ending with a 8-6 conference, 14-8 seasonal record. Captain for the 1972-1973 season was Kent Parks. Steve Lucas was high scorer with 367 points and led the re- bounding with 307 rebounds. Steve was selected Most Valuable Player, and Ron Toops received the Free Throw Award, making 70. 7% attempted. Kent Parks and Steve Lucas made the All-Conference team, and Steve was also selected for the Durand Holiday Tournament Team. Team We They Ashton 52 40 Genoa- Kingston 65 54 S. Gene Smith was 3rd in the 167 lb. wt. class and Rod Stiegel was 4th in the 185 lb. wt. class. Senior Terry Gobin was 2nd in the heavy weight divi- sion and advanced to Sectional competition. Howard Oleson and Terry Gobin were elected co- captains. Terry Gobin was selected as Most Valuable Wrestler. 42 SENIORS L TO R: B. Hendee, P. Best, D. Weber, K. Hogan, D. Rolston, K. Parks, S. Lucas. There are several reasons for the change, the main ones being the usual wet spring weather confining practices to the gym and causing the cancellation of games. As a summer sport, the weather should be more permissible, practices can be during the day rather than after school and players who competed in track are eligible for baseball. 44 TRACK FRONT ROW L TO R: Mgr. How wonderful to be over that freshman hurdle; to have a wider choice of classes and fewer required courses. The big opportunity to take Driver Education and get those coveted licenses to drive—the patience of instructors, Mr. Stine and Mr. Hoffmeister. And memories of working on the Homecoming float, the soc hops, and ordering class rings for early delivery next year. Yes, it was good to be a sophomore. 56 Kim Adams, Pres. Juniors have the privilege of operating the con- cession stands at all athletic events, of sponsoring soc hops, and of giving the annual Junior dance. And there is always the BIG privilege of giving the Seniors a farewell banquet. It is also a time to start being serious about choice of courses that will be helpful in one's chosen vocation--to be or not to be an engineer, or a nurse, or a car- penter, or a secretary? Of course Juniors also look forward to that big final year when they will be Seniors! 60 JESSICA ALIPRANDINI DALE ANDERSON VICKIE ASHELFORD JAMIE ASHER DAN BERC PHIL BEST JEFF BLAKE MARY BOEHM JOE BRANNUM SHARON CACCIATORE GREG CLINE RUSS CRULL, President JEFF DAVIS DAVID DeCICCO BEVERLY DIETRICH JOHN EICKERT JANE EICKMAN MINDY EKLUND DONNA FLOHR DENNIS FRANSEN 62 MIKE CESSNER ED CETZELMAN GREG CETZELMAN TERRY GOB IN BEVERLY HAENITSCH JANET HACEMANN JANE HAHN DENISE HAMER JOHN HARDENBROOK DEBBIE HARROLLE MARK HAYDEN DENNIS HAYE BRETT HENDEE DENNIS HERBIC CINDY HIMES JOHN HOFFMAN KIM HOGAN BOB HUFFORD CHERYL HUGHES HOLLY JACOBSON KATHY KEAN MARY KOBEL PAUL KOENCK, Treasurer JOEL KOPP 63 STEVE LUCAS DICK LUTZ CINDY Me GHEE, Secretary WENDY McKEE TERRI MELINE SHERRY MOSIMAN LENNIE NELSON HOWARD OLESON RANDY OSBORNE TERRY PALMER KENT PARKS JIM RATHKE, Vice- President SCOTT REYNOLDS JON ROBERTSON DAVE ROLSTON BRIAN ROSS DENNIS SAAM JOAN STORZ JANE TALLMAN STEVE TILBURY ED TINSLEY KAREN TUTTERROW DAVE WEBER TOM WELLS 64 EMORY WEEMS LISA WHETSEL SARAH WILLETT STEVE WONZONG JOHN WRASSE 65 The seniors were again at an all time high.
