Through hard work, they developed into a fine team finishing the season with a 6-2 record. Two Conference losses, Milledgeville and Stillman Valley, placed them 3rd in conference standing. This year was no exception. The bonfire was as mem- orable as was the wait for the junior attendant, Jane Tallman. Things looked as if they might get better, but the parade was 15 minutes late in getting started. The senior float was first, followed by the freshmen, juniors, and sophomores. The seniors also won school spirit week at school. RAH! Saturday night came quickly and everything went smoothly. Mark Hayden announced the attendants and the king and queen. Kevin Kivikko had the honor of crowning King Tom and Queen Kris. Then everyone danced and went their separate ways. OH, by the way, the score of the Homecoming game was 32-0. The Byron Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America began a new program this year with the Neighbors Nursing Home in Byron. Each interested girl adopted one of the residents as their grandparent and went to visit and talk to them. The girls sold candles and donated the proceeds to the HOPE foundation. To finance their spring trip to Chicago, the girls sold cookbooks. A King Pretty Feet contest was held in March during FHA week, and Jeff Camling was chosen as the winner. 17 GIRLS’ ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION FRONT ROW L TO R: D. Schneider, P. Daniels, T. Herfel, C. Every Monday during the fall they rode bikes around town or took hikes in the country. The annual bowling at the Byron House began, and it was time for all teams to compete for the championship. Captain Nancy Johnson and her team won the tournament. The girls sold tupperware for their money-making project, which financed the trip they took in the spring. Swimming, basketball, and volleyball were the activities during the latter part of the year. The girls held a father-daughter banquet at which awards were presented and the new officers announced. 18 GYM LEADERS CLUB FRONT ROW, L TO R: P. Carlson, M. Eickert, C. Haye, L. Falk. SECOND ROW: V. The 1971-1972 basketball season saw many contests decided in the final seconds of the games, creating excite- ment and thrills for all ages. The Durand Holiday Tournament was a highlight of the early season. The Tigers emerged victors, largely due to the fabulous free throw shooting of Steve Lucas. Randy Hogan and Russ Hoffman were honored by being chosen to the Tournament Team. The Tigers' first conference loss came against Stillman; But they went on to seven straight victories before los- ing a second conference game to Pecatonica. A loss of momentum cost the Tigers three more conference games but they finished the season with an 8-6 record which was good enough for third place in Conference standing. The over- all season record was 16-8. Individual honors were received by Russ Hoffman and Randy Hogan. Both Russ and Randy were elected co-cap- tains and both were voted to the second conference team by the conference coaches. Randy also was selected MVP for his fine season's work, and Russ also won the award for best percentage of free throws made. The Frosh-Soph got it all together this year. High percentage shooting along with exceptional rebounding earned the Cubs second in the Conference with a 12-2 record. The usual line-up was: Mike Landis and Doug Leary, guards; Ron Toops, center; Brad Lucas and Randy Garman, forwards. John Blackburn, Scott Hendrickson, and Ken Norup also played. The big change in the Cubs' performance showed up when they lost only two games out of the thirteen they played after the Christmas break. The high scorer for the season was Ron Toops. A 339 point total, 20 point average per game, showed his quick movement and timing. This became a familiar sound this year at Byron, where the first wrestling team was started by Coach Gary Davis. The team posted a 2-9 record, which is quite good for a first-year team. Ron Ashelford was elected outstanding wrestler. With ex- perience gained this year, next year's team looks forward to a better season. 25 THE MAN WHO DINNER The senior class of 1972 presented their play, The Man Who Came to Dinner on November 19 and 20. Famous playwrite Sheridan Whiteside, the main character of the play, came to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley where he tripped and supposedly frac- tured his ankle. Thus, not being able to move, he took over the household, and the action began, including a jealous quarrel between Lorraine Sheldon, a rather forward actress, and Maggie Cutler, Mr. Whiteside's private secretary. A Christmas radio broadcast from the living room also proved to be lively and quite amusing. The play was directed by Miss Kathy McLennan. CAME TO But Mr. Whiteside . . . CHRISTMAS Christmas spirit finally came to all students of By- ron High School. Some of the clubs had parties and there was the traditional concert the last day of school before vacation. This year there was plenty of enthu- siasm at Christmas as we anxiously awaited the much wished for, BROWN Christmas. The aluminum tree was assembled for another year and those gaily deco- rated but empty boxes were placed at the trunk. As a special present, we moved into the new section of the building on the first day back from vacation. What's the matter, Julie? Doesn't anybody want your lunch? Playing Je gagne at the French Club Christmas party. 27 SPEECH CLUB FRONT ROW L TO R: T. Hess, Duet Acting; J. Jeff- rey, Prose. SECOND ROW: T. Dyer, Prose; R. Jeffrey, Duet Acting; D. The speech team even won its own meet here in Byron after competing with eleven other schools. The team's total of 168 points just edged Boylan's 165. Two contestants went to compete in the state finals. Sara Hamer competed in original monologue and Terry Dyer in prose reading. Placing seventh out of twenty schools in the Ro- chelle Invitational meet, the team was quite happy with their successful day. But alas, the majority of the members this year were seniors, which means next year's team will be lacking. Why don't you, the reader, go see Mr. Mc- Names, whom the team fondly referred to as Dad. I'm sure there is an event that is right for you. FRONT ROW LTO R: D. Cacciatore, O. Oration; D. Leary, Radio; M. Eickert, O. Oation. SECOND ROW: J. Storz, Oratorical Dec.; J. With our high school band, the girls performed at half-time during all home foot- ball games. They also performed during the half- time of all home basketball games, and marched in the Homecoming and Memorial Day parades. The last game of the season marked the selection of Mary Kobel as the new captain for next year. This game also marked the final appearance of the senior members of the team: Ruthe Falk, Cindy Haye, Terry Dyer, Debbie Jacobs, Sara Hamer, Candy Mil- lard, Linda Camling, Debbie McGhee, Randi Wil- marth, Anne Ripplinger, Mary Eickert, and Donna Cacciatore. Saam. library Club really had something to cheer about this year. They got a new library. Well, they didn't get one all their own, but one was added this year. When it opened, there was something missing—the car- peting. So the resident librarians rallied round the flagpole and raised some money. Every member of the club stooped to some sort of manual labor. At least they got what we always needed, a carpeted library? (I ended with a question mark because as of now there is no carpeting, but by the time you read this there should be.) 32 BASEBALL FRONT ROW L TO R: B. Hendee, J. Hogan, K. Jones, D. Leary, M. Rain seemed to plague the baseball team this year, and the wet weather caused many scheduled games to be canceled. The Tigers finished the season with three wins and eight losses. Dan Hoffman was named most valuable player and Mike Landis most improved player. The team elected George Bonne and Scott Norris co-captains. SENIOR TRACK The Byron track team had a successful year again. An unusual number of sophomores and freshmen com- peted at the Varsity level because of only six runners on the Varsity team. Among the highlights for the 1972 season were the winning of second place in the Conference meet, Shan- Lan Relays and Forreston Relays. The Frosh-Soph team received second at the Oregon Frosh-Soph Invitational and 3rd at the Shan-Lan F-S Relays. Russ Hoffman, the only Senior, was Most Valuable Player by having earned 121 pts. Russ also was elected captain of the team. Lisle Invitational Meet-Ron Toops tied for 3rd place in the shot put. Ogle County Meet- Russ Hoffman won the discuss. Conference Meet-Russ Hoffman placed first in the low hurdles, high hurdles and the discuss. Ron Troops won the shot put. Forreston Invitational-The Frosh-Soph Sprint Med- ley team of Lance Dauenbaugh, Joe Pendergrass, Randy Carman and Gene Mead placed first. Randy Carman won the high jump. First place was captured by the Freshman 440 Relay team of Lance Dauenbaugh, Joe Pendergrass, Terry Zilliox and Gene Mead. Ron Toops placed first in the shot and discus, following a record breaking run by Paul Koenck. New Records—Bill Tilbury set a new school record in the two-mile by running a 10:43.2. Ron Toops es- tablished a new Shan-Lan F-S record in the shotput by throwing 45 ft. 6 inches. 36 JUNIOR-SENIOR BANQUET Following tradition, the juniors treated the seniors to a banquet as part of the May festivities of bidding seniors a fond farewell. To start the evening off, Holly Jacobson gave the invocation. Next came the devouring of 200 chickens, 75 pounds of corn, 100 pounds of potatoes, 33 gallons of gravy, 100 gallons of milk, and whatever else is your guess. One shy senior was even bet that she wouldn't eat a certain amount of butter. Down on the table went the money (money even came from one senior who is constantly in debt) and down, down went some butter, but not all. After all tummies were filled, Ruthe Falk and Sarah Hamer, representing the seniors, read the class will, leaving their prized possessions to underclassmen and teachers. Juniors Mark Hayden and Joan Storz prophesied what the seniors would be doing in 1992. 38 These are some of the Byron High School scholars! SFZ in concert. 39 “CAROUSEL” 40 On the night of May 13 all bad things became good in the town of ByTon. The clouds that had been hanging over the town disappeared from sight. The weather be- came warm. The jeans and bodyshirts were turned into tuxedos and gowns. This is the night that the high school gym was turned into a park. This was the night of Carousel. Queen Kristine Helsten and King George Bonne reigned over the annual prom. They were attended by Randi Wilmarth and Gary Camling, first attendants; Lynn Tallman and Russ Hoffman, second attendants; Anne Ripplinger and Tom Gobin, third attendants; and Donna Cacciatore and Ron Ashelford, fourth attendants. After King George and Queen Kristine were crowned by last year's king and queen, Kim Gouker and Stephanie Smith, a medley of three Beatle songs was sung to the new King and Queen by David Sincox. The Grand March was then led by the new May royalty. At the close of the events the king, queen, and court danced the first dance of the evening. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY FRONT ROW L TO R: T. The Inkspot is one of the best parts of the TEMPO, our area newspaper. Where else can one find a story about an almost-beauty queen, or find out what to do if one receives an obscene phone call? Much hard work goes into the publication of the Inkspot. Every day, first hour, the staff works hard on their stories. This year, with the exception of school holidays, the Inkspot appeared weekly. 43 BY-HI FRONT ROW L TO R: D. Harms, Asst. Bus. Manager; D. Cacciatore, Editor; Mrs. Hobart, Advisor; J. These students are fine people and will go far in life. They put in many hours to bring you this fine book. It is truly an exceptional book, and it will be the greatest book every printed, until next year's By-Hi is published. 44 WORK PROGRAM 45 Diane Medearis works on an assembly line at Quality Metal. They have had at least three principals and, during one semester in junior high, they disposed of no less than four English teachers. However, when they reached high school, they settled down—a little. The class of '72 will be a hard act for '73 to follow. When asking some of the members of the class their most memorable moments, replies were, Mrs. Strub, my kindergarten year, junior high, especially eighth grade, and my freshman year! Specific incidents also came to mind: It was in third grade when I cheated on a paper and got caught. I really got in trouble for that! Being seniors, they have gone through some rugged weeks and years, but they have survived it all. After grad- uation most of them will not see much of each other again. They need time to reminisce. The rest of this page is left blank for just that purpose. 59 JUNIORS Jessica Aliprandini Dale Anderson Vicki Ashe 1 ford Jamie Asher Becky Bennett Dan Berg Phil Best Jeff Blake Mary Boehm Joe Brannum Sharon Cacciatore Greg Cline Russell Crull Andy Dach Jeff Davis David DeCicco Beverly Dietrich John Eickert Donna Flohr, Treasurer Dennis Fransen Ed Getzelman Greg Getzelman Terry Gob in Beverly Haenitsch Janet Hagemann 60 Jane Hahn, Secretary John Hardenbrook Debbie Harrolle Mark Hayden Dennis Haye Brett Hendee Brenda Henry Dennis Herbig Cindy Himes John Hoffman Kim Hogan Bob Hu fford Cheryl Hughes Holly Jacobson Kathy Kean Mary Kobel Joel Kopp Wendy McKee Cindy McGhee Terri Meline Richard Mitchell Sherry Mosiman Lennie Nelson Howard Oleson Randy Osborne Terry Palmer Kent Parks Jim Rathke, President Tod Reiniche Scott Reynolds 61 Jon Robertson Dave Rolston Brian Ross, Vice-President Dennis Saam Jane Snyder Joan Storz Jane Tallman Steve Tilbury Ed Tinsley Karen Tutterrow David Weber Tom Wells Lisa Whetsel Sarah Willett Steve Wonzong John Wrasse Life as a junior was not too fulfilling. Juniors are, or become, seventeen during the year and this is one year away from EIGHTEEN. After going through a long year, juniors will soon become seniors, hopefully. This junior class had quite an assortment of students. There were fat kids, skinny kids, sissy kids, kids who climb on rocks, and yes, even kids with straight A's. This class had much to be proud of, for they were the only class ever at Byron High to graduate in the year 1973. 62 SOPHOMORES Gary Anspach Susan Baker John Blackburn Craig Blanchard Julie Bokker Rhonda Brannum Jim Brown Lori Brown Julie Cacciatore Doug Carey Peggy Carlson Vicky Carr Debbie Carter Christy Clary Terry Clubb John Cooper Gary Dieckbemd, Treasurer Mary DiGiovanni Shelly Eickman Rhonda Ericson Secretary Danny Falk Bridget Feeley Melody Fortune Donna Fransen Roger Gambrel 64 Randy Garman Tom Hammack Paul Hardenbrook Darlene Harms Darrell Harms Scott Hendrickson Kevin Herbig Debbie Hickman Jim Hillman Nancy Hoffman Jim Horrell Debbie Hoting Laurie Huntley Dianna King Robert Kufalk Mike Landis Doug Leary Belinda Lewis, Vice-President Brad Lucas Bob Medearis Beth Meeker Lynne Meyer Craig Meyers Carol Miller Pam Mitchell Teresa Mitchell Debbie Moats Mickey Newhausen Vickie Noffsinger Sandra Norris 65 Ken Norup Barry Ole son Terry Oltmanns Jeannie Otten Robert Parish Cindy Pederson Mike Persinger Jeff Pierson Cindy Rowland George Schenck Dennis Schneider Gordon Seaman Carla Shultz Debbie Simoens Gene Smith Robert Smith Karen Sommers Rodney Stegall Teresa Stukenberg Connie Tabone Mickey Tate Sue Tinsley Luwanna Todd Ron Toops, President Julie Violet Kerry Wickler Mike Wilmarth Tom Wilson Mark Winterton Mike Wonzong 66 The sophomores were relieved because they were no longer freshmen. However, they soon realized that they had two more years, and what a shock that was! The only thing they had to look forward to was getting their driver's licenses and ordering their class rings. They were a quiet group and didn't cause much trouble. They had the usual quota of trouble makers, but the number was down from recent years. ROUGH, TOUGH Sophomores in action.
