The Byron track team competed in many top meets this year including the Oak Park Relays in Chicago, Normal Relays in Normal, Guilford Relays in Rockford, the District meet in Belvidere, and the Route 72 Conference meet. They placed fifth in the Guilford and Normal Relays and 2 relay teams placed at Oak Park. A big highlight this year was winning the conference track meet with a record 105 points and completing the sweep of Conference championships this year after the football, basketball, and baseball teams won their conference. The nearest competitor to Byron was 71 points behind. Jeff Wilmarth was the only player to advance to the state meet by winning the 440 in the District track meet. Jeff was the most valuable player this year with 132 1 2 points and was elected captain. Three freshman earned varsity letters this year; Todd Reiniche, Brian Ross, and Mike Shepard. The '69-'70 Cubs showed great spirit and fight, under the leadership of Mr. Drake, posting a 15--8 season record. The Cubs won the Route-72 Tourney by defeating Stillman Valley in a very close contest and tied for second in the conference with a 10--4 record. Mr. Drake will be stepping up to the varsity coaching position, and Mr. Hoffmeister will be taking the reins of the Cubs in 1970-71.
