Just as the space mission earlier last year was a highlight to our country, so our yearbook presents the highlights of the students and faculty down here at earth station BHS. Although our book centralizes around the pleasures of school, do not forget that we are concerned about the serious side of school and life also. Our goal here is not the Sea of Tranquility but the Sea of Success. o Fun and work contribute to this. Here at Byron we are being prepared to become tomorrow's leaders and space travelers. This past year was the beginning of the moon age. We have tried to make our school year as unforget- table as Mike Collins, Neil Armstrong, and Buzz Al- drin made July 20, 1969, unforgettable by their spectacular moon landing. Although it may seem we are only interested in ex- tracurricular activities in our school life, it isn't true. Academic studies are a large part of our lives, and Byron offers us a variety of courses to prepare us for our futuristic plans. Algebra students learn of old and new methods of math to enable them to monitor the controls of our space programs. Industrial Art classes, including Drafting and Wood- working, might be made up of our next era|s rocket makers who will send our generation to their homes on the moon. Biology students, although bewildered now, may discover animal life on other planets later. Other various subjects occupy the daily life of us students. As one can see, our studies are important to our lives in the near future. 9 irr ORGANIZATIONS BY-HI FRONT ROW, L. to R.: Mrs. Hobart, Advisor; J. Eickman, Co-Editor; M. Cox, Editor; K. Norris, Bus. Manager; A. Ripplinger, Ass't Bus. Manager. SECOND ROW: K. Falk, Typist; G. Wright, Photographer; D. Lutz, Copy-Editor; N. Skurski, Advertiser; J. Stein, Typist; D. Hamer, Advertiser; M. Farris, Sports. Copy deadline is next Friday. Only By-Hi staff members know how much work this line entails. Pictures must be taken and developed, copy must be written, identifications must be checked, and material must be typed. Many more activities are involved in getting ready to meet a deadline established by the publisher. Like building a rocket, the yearbook is well planned. These staff members work very diligently from the be- ginning of the year, when advertisement space and subscriptions are sold, right up to the grand finale when the yearbook is distributed to the studnets. Each staff tries to create a book which is unique, bigger, and better than the year before. 12 FRENCH CLUB FRONT ROW, L. to R.: Mrs. Merson, Advisor; T. Dyer, Vice-Pres.; C. Millard, Sec.; D. Girls' Athletic Association is a club open to all girls who are interested in sports, who want to have fun, and who want to keep in astronautical shape. This year's timetable was filled with such sports as football, baseball, bowling, swimming, tumbling, jumping on the trampoline, and speedball. During the year, the girls decorated the gym for Homecoming, sold stationery, participated in the cancer drive, and held a big slumber party for all members. A new project was the GAA Playday. Other schools were invited to come and spend the day playing games with our members. For a final event, the girls attended a gymnastic circus at I.S.U. in Normal on April 25. 14 VARSITY CLUB FRONT ROW, L. TO R.: Coach Parks, G. Butt, Sec.; C. Parks, Pres.; D. Ferb, V.P.; H. Another boost in our journey to the Sea of Success was the addition of a new journalism class, taught by Mr. Michael Jerding. The class assumed the responsibility of publishing the school paper. This gave them first-hand experience in conducting interviews and in writing news stories, feature articles, columns, and headlines. Publishing their journalistic endeavors was not the only function of the Staff. They toured the Durand and Brod- head printing plants and attended a seminar in Rockford. The Inkspot crew produced and published a fine paper, which all the students were proud of. BAND FRONT ROW, L. to R.: B. Bennett, M. Boehm, D. Hoting, L. Palmer, C. Dargitz, M. Hartz. SECOND ROW: J. Forward, march! This is the countdown for the Drill Team members before each performance. New and different routines were performed during the halftimes of the home basketball games this year under the leadership of Kathy Norris, Captain. The Tigerettes were very entertaining to all who had the pleasure of watching them. During the halftime of one football game, the Drill Team had the privilege of performing a dance routine, together with the band, to the tune of Hey Look Me Over . They participated in the Homecoming, Rochelle Loyalty, and the Memorial Day parades this season. As all good things come to an end, so did the Drill Team marching season. Seniors on the squad were Kathy Norris, Mary Cox, Julie Stein, and Chris Kaltenbach. Winnie Jarrett had the honor of becoming the new captain for the 1970-71 season. Mr. Kantner acted as the advisor. They won the Route 72 Conference Tourney, the District Tourney, and advanced to the Regional for the second year in a row. They played many tough games including four games against three Big Eight schools. They tied West 2--2 in the first game of the season and later lost to Guilford by only one run. This year Craig Parks and Dave Ferb were elected co-captains, and Craig was named most valuable player. Scott Norris and Dan Powless were selected most improved players. They placed fifth in the Guilford and Normal Relays and 2 relay teams placed at Oak Park. A big highlight this year was winning the conference track meet with a record 105 points and completing the sweep of Conference championships this year after the football, basketball, and baseball teams won their conference. The nearest competitor to Byron was 71 points behind. Jeff Wilmarth was the only player to advance to the state meet by winning the 440 in the District track meet. Jeff was the most valuable player this year with 132 1 2 points and was elected captain. Three freshman earned varsity letters this year; Todd Reiniche, Brian Ross, and Mike Shepard. The Byron Tigers, capturing championships in the Durand Holiday Tourney, the District Tourney, and the Conference, rolled to an excellent 23—3 season record in the 1969-70 campaign. This was Coach Joe Parks' last year as head basketball coach, for he announced his retirement shortly after the season ended. The Tigers displayed impressive victories in the Holiday Tourney by defeating Dakota and then unbeaten Hon- onegah in the championship game. Rick Weber received the free throw award this year with a .722 percentage. Dave Ferb was selected to the all-conference first team squad by unanimous choice. Ferb also was named captain and most valuable player. Keith Farver and Craig Parks were selected to the second squad. The team is losing four seniors this year, but a fine group of Juniors and Sophomores make the future very bright for next year. A highly successful parade was presented by the student body Friday afternoon with the sophomore float taking first place and the freshman float second. Library Club was awarded a first in the stunt division with F.T.A. receiving second. Friday evening's highpoint was Byron's great 32--0 victory over Forreston. The Homecoming dance theme was Autumn Haze. All who attended the dance enjoyed them- selves completely. Music vibrations were supplied by The Manna. The frantic chase highlighted the evening, as girls and guys circled the gym. The triumphant girls who rendezvoused with their guys piloted them to Marryin' Sam to be married. Dave Ferb and Debbie McGhee were honored with first place in the costume contest, and Dan Hoffman's corsage won first. 44 SPEECH Speaking naturally isn't always easy, especially if you are on Byron's Speech Team. These speakers know what it is to write and even memorize speeches so that they can recite them perfectly. Much time goes into preparing a well-written speech. This team started its competition flight by going to Waukegan. From there the team went to Deer- field, and then on to Byron's invitational. The lucky ones, who managed to place well here at Byron, traveled on to compete at Belvidere in the District meet. All the speakers worked diligently this year under the direction of their coach and sponsor, Mr. Gene McNames. 45 CHRISTMAS Trees glittering in the hall and the library, gaily decorated classroom windows and bulletin boards, and many club parties all foretold the coming of Christmas and the long-awaited vacation. FHA'ers went caroling. The German St. Nick visited German Club while they sang carols in Ger- man. French bingo followed French Club's dinner. Library club decorated the library's tree. For a vacation send-off, the band and chorus played and sang the all-time favorite carols with all students joining in on Frosty the Snowman and Silent Night. 46 48 SENIOR PLAY “YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU” This year's seniors combined all their acting talents to launch the delightful Moss Hart and George Kaufman production of You Can't Take It With You . May 15 and May 16 were the big days when after much work, the play was presented. The story revolved around the Sycamore family members who pursued their hobbies on a fulltime basis. When their daughter fell in love with the boss's son, his very aristocratic family came to dinner a night early. Then, the problems really began. The entire play cast wishes to express their gratitude to Mr. Gene McNames for his time and leadership which helped to spring this play to a success. 49 JUNIOR-SENIOR BANQUET May 19, 1970, was the date, and the Byron Legion Hall was the site for the annual Junior- Senior Banquet. Mary Jane Hartz gave the invocation which was followed by a smorgasbord fit for an astronaut, served by the ladies of the Legion. John Eickman, President of the Junior class, welcomed the Sen- iors of 70 , and John Farris, Senior President, supplied the response. The Senior class wills were read by Nancy Mc- Laughlin and Keith Farver. Following this, Laurie Landis, Mike Farris, and Winnie Jarrett, having looked into the future, prophesied what each of the Seniors might be doing ten years from now. The evening was a glowing success. 50 “GONE WITH THE WIND” This year's May Dance was more than a space odyssey. The gym was decorated with the cosmic colors of turquoise and white streamers, a Southern mansion, and a fountain to emphasize the theme of Gone With The Wind . Master of Ceremonies, Mike Farris, an- nounced the 1970 May Court and the crowning of Queen Norma Skurski and King Dave Ferb by last year's royalty. The court consisted of: Jeanne Berg and Harry Adams, 1st attendants; Nancy McLaughlin and Craig Parks, 2nd atten- dants; Kathy Norris and Jeff Wilmarth, 3rd at- tendants; and Mary Cox and Keith Farver, 4th attendants. Following this, Mr. Baumann sang a selection, and the second graders starred in the annual May Pole Dance to honor the royalty. The Metro-Tones supplied the music for dancing. All in all this dance can best be de- scribed as out of this world. 51 COMMENCEMENT Harry Adams Salutatorian Tom Horrell Valedictorian The end of high school days arrived for the Seniors on May 29, 1970, when they re- ceived their diplomas. Tom Horrell, valedictorian, and Harry Adams, salutatorian, gave their stimulating speeches. These Seniors have completed their first lap in the journey of education. They are reluctant to leave the familiar haunts and faces; yet they are spurred on by their desire to explore the future. Now each must go his separate way--some to greater schools, some to work, and maybe, even some on to the space program--but each will carry with him an abundance of memories of four happy years at B.H.S. Thirteen years ago these 26 Seniors began their school career together under Mrs. Harmon's teaching. Little did they know then that these years would go by so quickly, leaving in their places only recollections of the fun times they had had together. As Freshmen, they started a new exploration, that of high school. At first, the journey seemed hard because of the new, confusing environment; but they soon learned what to do. As Sophs , they became more involved with extra-curricular activities, many received their drivers' licenses, and all ordered their class rings. Chem. experiments and geometry problems provided the work, while they pro- vided the fun in everything they did. Now they were Juniors, upperclassmen! Junior Stand assignments, Junior Dance preparations, their lst-place Homecoming stunt, and the annual Junior-Senior banquet were some of that year's attractions. The next year they had advanced in the world and were going down the home stretch of their high school ca- reer. Gathering wood for the Homecoming bonfire, producing the Senior Play, giving the May Dance, attending Baccalaureate and Commencement signified they were Seniors. They were ready to receive their diplomas, and they realized that the time had gone by too fast. Now they had the distant future at their feet, and the past thir- teen years, perhaps the best of their lives, behind them. 73 SENIOR ACTIVITIES HARRY ADAMS—Byron 1,2,3,4—Cl. And so comes the splash-down and the end of our space voyage for this year's By-Hi. We hope you have enjoyed your journey to the moon. We would be remiss, however, if we did not record that some- times when shooting for great heights, re- verses do occur. The most anxiously awaited splash- down thus far in our moon exploration history came on Friday, April 17, 1970, when Astronauts James Lovell, Fred Haise, and John Swigert landed in the South Pa- cific. On Monday of that week, while still on their way to the moon, an oxygen tank in their service module burst, putting their lives in jeopardy. All plans for a moon landing were discarded, and they were re- turned to earth as quickly as possible. The courage, ingenuity, and resourcefulness of the astronauts and of Houston Mission Con- trol ground crew combined to transform a potential tragedy into a heart-stopping rescue. This experience points out many things: The importance of education and training that can turn reverses into victories; the importance of teamwork; the importance of living and working together in harmony to accomplish goals.
