Basketball provided one of the most thrilling chapters in the Story of the Year. The Tigers enjoyed one of their most successful seasons in several years, as they compiled a 24--4 record. During the regular season play, the team won the Durand Holiday Tournament and the Route 72 Conference Tournament championships. The Tigers also claimed a share of the Conference title with their 12—2 Confer- ence record. In I.H.S.A. tournament play, the Tigers won the district title for the first time in nine years. Then, in the first game of the regional tournament they were beaten 61—57 by Dixon, thus ending their season. The team was coached by Mr. Parks and captained by Brad Auker and Ric Cupp. The players voted Dave Ferb as Most Valuable Player. Brad Auker won the free throw award by making 73.3% of his free throws. Byron had all five starters nominated for the All-Conference team. Of these, Brad Auker, Dave Ferb, and Keith Farver made the team, while Craig Parks and Ric Cupp received Honorable Mention. The team provided many thrilling games this year and the same can be forseen for next year. The Cubs, under the guidance of Coach Don Drake, added to Byron's successful basketball season with a 22--1 record. The lone defeat came just three games from the end of the season and ended a 29-game winning streak for the Cubs. In addition to winning the Conference Crown with a 13--1 record, the invincible frosh-soph team also won their own Holiday Tournament and Route 72 Conference Tournament titles. 21
