We hope that the narration will help you to relive a cherished event, revive a special friendship, recall the styles of the year, remember the historical events that influence the school environment, and renew your desire for additional study and learning. Although this book will concentrate to a great extent on the extracurricular side of school life, we are ever mindful that the main reason we are in school is to gain knowledge and competency which will help us to live good and useful lives after we leave these halls of learning. Even though we seldom tell them so, we want the faculty and administration, as well as our parents, to know that we do appreciate their efforts to give us a good education. But the lighter side of life is also important. So, as you turn the pages, tarry a while and look at our new football bleachers, the handiwork of interested townspeople; watch our Drill Team perform at home games; congratulate the kings and queens of Homecoming and of the May; listen for the beat, and dance in our teenage style; vote in the Presidential election; measure our short skirts; and our long hair and sideburns; visit our club meetings; and help us win our ball games. And, now, the story unfolds . . . 2 BY-HI FRONT ROW, L to R: Mrs. Hobart, Advisor; D. Swenson, Editor; M. Cox, Co-Editor; V. Clawe, Bus. Manager; K. Norris, Ass t Bus. Manager. SECOND ROW: B. The addition of German to the curriculum made possible the organization of German Club. A constitution was written by the officers which defined the club's purpose as a means of learning more about the German way of living. Throughout the year several meetings were held at which slides were shown by various people who had trav- eled in Germany. The sessions also included a talk on German life. The German Club members wish to thank Mr. Anderson for making the new organization possible. DRILL TEAM FRONT ROW, Lto R: M. Eickert, M. Cox, L. Medlin, D. Hamer, B. Dunham, R. Falk. Halftime entertainment at all home football and basketball games was provided by the marching Tigerette Drill Team, led by Dianne Swenson, captain. They participated in many events during the year, including Home- coming and Memorial Day parades. Fun night at the last home basketball game, when all drill routines were purposely done wrong and then fi- nally done right, marked the final performance for the eleven senior members of the Tigerettes and was high- lighted by the announcement of the 1969-70 team captain--Kathy Norris. The senior members were Dianne Swenson, Claire Calvert, Sallie Jarrett, Janice Champion, Virginia Glawe, Julie Wilmarth, Brenda Dunham, Lorena Medlin, Kay Norup, Sally Babbitt, and Helen Strub. The whole drill team would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Amsrud and Mr. Kantner for all the help they gave the team. The traditional formation of the B . F.F.A FRONT ROW, L to R: G. Miller, Pres.; B. After the presentation of flags by several Byron girls, Dianne Swenson, FHA State Treasurer, gave a speech. Kathy Norris also brought honor to BHS by holding the office of Vice-President of Section 22. November proved to be a busy month with the formal initiation of the Freshmen girls and the Sadie Hawk- ins Dance. During February and March the senior girls corresponded with a secret sis, and in March a party was held to reveal the secret sisters. The week of March 24 was recognized as FHA week. During this time the girls had a candy sale, a day to honor the teachers, and a red and white day. April was highlighted with the Spring Rally held at Ashton, and in May new officers were elected and installed. With school's end came the annual FHA picnic at White Pines, which proved enjoyable to all who attended. 9 G.A.A FRONT ROW, L to R: Mrs. Glotfelty, Advisor; D. Greffe, Pres.; V. Glawe, Vice-Pres.; L. The first five weeks were spent outdoors playing baseball or shooting arrows. Several of the girls participated in an archery tournament and their scores were sent to be compared with scores from surrounding schools. December was spent playing volleyball. For this the girls were divided into six teams and played three games each Monday night. As soon as the volleyball nets were put away, teams were set up for bowling at the Byron House. Bowling led to the playing of basketball and then came the final event of the year— the installation of officers for 1969-70. 10 FRENCH CLUB FRONT ROW, L to R: Mrs. Merson, Advisor; K. The new Inkspot took on the style of a real newspaper in- cluding photographs, editorials, and reports on school organizations. Advertisements from local merchants were collected to cover the cost of publishing the newspaper in Durand. Several of the staff members attended the High School Journalism Seminar in February, which was held at the Hotel Faust. During the course of the day, Terry Haye, editor of the Inkspot, was presented with the Most Valuable Staffer Award for BHS. After an enjoyable lunch, everyone present enjoyed a tour of the Rockford News Tower. The Inkspot staff worked very hard to provide interesting reading matter for all. 14 VARSITY FRONT ROW, L to R: G. Butt, M. Hulsebus, A. Cupp, C. Grigalauski, B. Tinsley, A. Goeking, C. Helsten. The story of football started a week before the opening of school and continued until November 1 with several hours of practice each day, sometimes in hot weather, or in wet weather, or in freezing weather. The team was led by captains Norm Johnson and Ric Cupp to a respectable 3--2--3 season's record. After the season Ric Cupp was elected Most Valuable Player, and Charles Helsten was Most Improved Player. Chuck Grigalauski and Ric Cupp were elected to the All-Conference team while Norm Johnson and Harry Adams re- ceived honorable mention. 16 SENIORS Ric Cupp Chuck Grigalauski John Fruin Charles Helsten Mike Hulsebus Dale Dieckbernd Doug Bouton Geary Nelson Not Pictured: Ron Dach s s - • ■ v s '' 17 Norm Johnson FROSH-SOPH FRONT ROW, L to R: Coach Farrey, D. The frosh-soph team had one of its better seasons this year. The Cubs compiled a 3--4 season record. Under the direction of coaches Ray Farrey and Raymond Plantz the boys gained valuable experience in football. This experience makes the prospects bright for Byron next season. 18 VARSITY FRONT ROW, L to R: Coach Parks, D. Dieckbemd. SECOND ROW: K. Farver, B. Auker, C. Parks, G. Palmer, R. Cupp, A. Cupp, B. The Tigers enjoyed one of their most successful seasons in several years, as they compiled a 24--4 record. During the regular season play, the team won the Durand Holiday Tournament and the Route 72 Conference Tournament championships. The Tigers also claimed a share of the Conference title with their 12—2 Confer- ence record. In I.H.S.A. tournament play, the Tigers won the district title for the first time in nine years. Then, in the first game of the regional tournament they were beaten 61—57 by Dixon, thus ending their season. The team was coached by Mr. Parks and captained by Brad Auker and Ric Cupp. The players voted Dave Ferb as Most Valuable Player. Brad Auker won the free throw award by making 73.3% of his free throws. Byron had all five starters nominated for the All-Conference team. Of these, Brad Auker, Dave Ferb, and Keith Farver made the team, while Craig Parks and Ric Cupp received Honorable Mention. The team provided many thrilling games this year and the same can be forseen for next year. The lone defeat came just three games from the end of the season and ended a 29-game winning streak for the Cubs. In addition to winning the Conference Crown with a 13--1 record, the invincible frosh-soph team also won their own Holiday Tournament and Route 72 Conference Tournament titles. 21 TRACK The Track story for 1969 proved to be a fairly successful one for the Byron track team. Though the Tigers had only two men place at the district meet, they did win the Route 72 conference meet. The frosh-soph track team suffered due to the lack of boysoutfor track. Because of this, many sophomores competed on the varsity level. Still, they took second place at the Route 72 meet. The Most Valuable Player for track is picked on the basis of total points. This year the honor went to Jeff Wilmarth. Bill Farris was team captain. 22 Brad Brown Bill Farris SENIOR TRACKMEN Dale Dieckbemd Charles Helsten Norm Johnson VARSITY CHEERLEADERS L to R: D. A pep rally and snake dance started the excitirfg weekend on Thursday fol- lowed by the Frosh-Soph game. School was dismissed early on Friday for the preparation of the parade which displayed the floats of the classes and faculty. The excitement came to a peak on Friday evening when the Tigers gained a victory over Franklin Cen- ter with a score of 12 to 7. During the game's half- time, stunts were presented by each class with the Junior Class winning first place. Also, the winning Senior float was announced. The theme of the an- nual Homecoming dance was Swirling Shadows and was enjoyed by all who attended. The highlight of the evening was the coronation of Queen Diane and King Norm who reigned over Homecoming 1968. King Norm and Queen Diane Fourth L. to R.: Fourth attend- ants, Dan Hoffman and Kris- tine Helsten; Second attend- ants, Chuck Krasuski and Linda Ericson; King Norm Johnson and Queen Diane Greffe; First attendants, Don Hahn and Virginia Glawe; Third attendants, Scott Hen- dee and Stephanie Smith. SADIE HA WKINS The annual F.H.A. Sadie Hawkins Dance proved to be a fun-filled evening for all those who attended. Music for dancing was provided by The Soules ; but the highlight of the evening was the chase around the gym. The lucky girls who caught their guys quickly dragged them off to be mar- ried by Marryin' Sam. The costume contest was won by Janet Wilson and Don Morrison. Charles Helsten wore the prize-winning corsage. 30 THE SENIOR PLA Y “THE TENDER TRAP’’ As the '68 football season came to a close, the Seniors began working on their play, The Tender Trap, which was presented on November 22 and 23. The play was a comical story of the life of a New York bachelor and his girl problems, with one lucky girl winning the bachelor's heart in the final act. The leading roles were played by Ric Cupp, Craig Bontjes, Debbie Hendee, and Vicki Hess. The Seniors wish to extend a special thanks to Mr. Gary Anderson who directed the play. 31 THE CHRISTMAS The Christmas trees in the library and the hall made it quite obvious that Christmas season and va- cation were near. This year the teachers participated in a Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus contest sponsored by the By-Hi staff. Students voted by dropping coins in cans bearing each contestant's name. The two with the most coins won the honors. Reigning as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus were Mr. Kenneth Davis and Mrs. Sandra Glotfelty. The combined junior and senior high bands and choruses presented an enjoyable concert of Christmas music under the direction of Mrs. Beth Amsrud. For a finale the entire student body, accompanied by the band, sang several Christmas carols. 33 JUNIOR DANCE The Class of '70 presented the annual Junior Dance on March 29. The theme was in discotheque style with mod posters used to decorate the gym. Music was pro- vided by The Diplomats, a Wisconsin group. JUNIOR-SENIOR BANQUET Traditionally, the Juniors entertain the Seniors at a spring banquet. This year the delicious banquet was served at the Byron Legion Hall by members of the Legion on May 8. Ken Farver served as Master of Ceremonies. Julie Stein gave the invocation, and Junior Class president, Randy Reiniche, gave the welcoming speech. Dennis Carman, Senior vice-president, responded. Entertainment was provided by Nancy McLaughlin and John Farris, who read the Senior prophecy, and Janice Champion and Terry Haye, who presented the Senior class will. 34 AUTOGRAPHS 35 “ONCE UPON A TIME’’ 36 Once Upon A Time was the theme of the annual May Dance. The event of May 10 featured elaborate decorations which turned the gym into a virtual fairyland, with a huge story-book castle at one end of the gym, and a giant open story book at the other end. False ceiling and walls were made with burgundy, pink, and white crepe paper streamers. Gary Murphy, Master of Ceremonies, introduced the Seniors and their dates and also the underclassmen and their dates who took part in the Grand March. The crowning of King Brad Auker and Queen Brenda Dunham highlighted the evening's events. The court consisted of Virginia Glawe and Ric Cupp, 1st attend- ants; Diane Greffe and Chuck Grigalauski 2nd attendants; Julie Wilmarth and Norm Johnson 3rd attendants; and Kathleen Parks and Charles Helsten, 4th attendants. After the dance for the court, entertain- ment to honor the royalty was provided by the first and second graders dancing the May Pole Dance and by Mr. Bauman sing- ing a medley of show tunes. Following the program, the Grand March was led by the King and Queen and their royalty. Music for dancing was provided by The Metro Tones . Many couples enjoyed the Post-Prom party held at the Sportsman Club where the Forest City Sound provided music. After the dance, some of the senior couples en- joyed a breakfast served by some of the Club's members. 37 COMMENCEMENT On May 29, 1969, the members of the Senior Class marched down the aisle to receive their diplomas, mark- ing an end of their days in the crowded halls of B.H.S. Don Hahn, class president, gave a welcoming speech. The main speakers were Sallie Jarrett, valedictorian, and Terry Haye, salutatoriam The Class of '69 will long be re- membered by students, faculty, and friends for their participation in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in other school organizations. Hulsebus, G. Palmer. These 36 Seniors began their school years in the new kindergarten room under Mrs. Harmon's kind guidance and have been classmates for the past thirteen years. Three of their grade school years were spent in the old Franklin Street School and then they returned to the Byron Junior High to begin preparing for graduation into high school. Then they were Freshman at last and became involved in the sports and activities of high school. Their sophomore year was one filled with money-making projects such as soc-hops and candy sales. Class rings, work- ing in the junior stand, planning the Junior-Senior banquet and the annual Junior Dance highlighted their Junior year. Their long-awaited Senior year drew rapidly to a close, and soon it was time for caps and gowns. This book will long hold fond memories of their fun-filled days as Seniors. 55 WE ARE GREAT WE ARE FINE WE RE THE CLASS OE '69!! The class of 1970 sped through their Junior year amidst much fun and work. The Juniors started out having fun while putting together their Homecoming float and thinking up a stunt, which won first place, for the Home- coming activities. The Juniors were caught up in run- ning the refreshment stand at all home games, planning the Junior-Senior Banquet and sponsoring the annual Ju- nior D.ance. And next year brings the caps and gowns. 60 SOPHOMORES John Eickman President Dick Fridley Vice President Kim Gouker Secretary Dennis Bontjes Tre asurer Advisor: Mr. Stine Gerald Barnes Steve Carlson Elaine Chiodini Kathleen Falk Kathy Bousum Christine Carter Rosalie Christensen Mike Farris Pete Cacciatore Vickie Case David Clarke Judy Garver Cathy Camling Carla Cato Perry Dargitz Lynda Goeking David Carey Carol Cheek David Deets Kathy Grigalauski 61 Kathy Guell Merlin Hagemann Daina Hamer Mary Jane Hartz Bob Haye Dick Haye Scott Hendee Linda Hickman Ron Himes Brad Hufford Pam Huls Winnie Jarrett Scott Jeffrey Ron Jennings Ernie Johnson Nora Johnson Laurie Landis Carol Lingel Mike Lockner Debbie Lutz Doug Moore Larry Newhausen Christine Norup Vickie Palmer Gary Pendergrass Wendy Pendergrass Steve Reed Cindy Reiniche 62 Stephanie Smith Rick Weber Gary Wright Half done already!--Even the class rings have been or- dered! Learning to drive played a big part in the Class of '71 's sophomore year--at last those long-awaited licenses seemed nearer. The sophomores received extra Homecoming spirit when it was announced that their float had won second place. Now they are eager to assume the title of upperclass- men. 63 FRESHMEN Dan Hoffman Secretary Randi Wilmarth Treasurer Advisor: Mrs. Jarrett Ron Ashelford Steve Brantner Ralph Carr Debbie Daniel Susan Babbitt Brian Bontjes Charles Calvert Curt Dargitz Jeff B1 anchard Gary Bontjes Gary Camling Terry Dyer Teresa Blanchard Mike Buskohl Linda Camling Jo Ann Ebert George Bonne Cindy Cacciatore Chris Cunningham Mary Eickert Jean Emery Diane Gregory Stan Head Randy Hogan Ruth Falk Mike Hagemann Kristine Helsten Doug Hoting Dwight Faulkner Sarah Hamer Rita Henson Jim Hulsebus Dave Fridley Cindy Haye Teresa Hess Robert Hulls Tom Gobin Joel Hayden Russel Hoffman Don Hyle 65 Debbie Jacobs Ron Jeffrey Jody Jennings Jeff Johnson Kevin Kivikko Chesterlene Lake Jeff Laws Ed Lesner Carolyn Lindsey Barb Lockner Scott Lucas Kurt Lucan Dale McAlonan Dan McDaniel Debbie McGhee Diane Medearis Janet Medl in Lois Medl in Sue Meeker Candy Millard Karen Mollen Virginia Moore Barb Newhausen Scott Norris Lynn Novak Alan Onken Carolyn Onley Larry Owens 66 As fall approached, so did the class of '72. The new freshmen soon became right at home in the crowded halls of B.H.S. and began participating in the activities with much zest. The Freshmen girls in F.H.A. acquired a new sister through the Secret Sister project. Many of the girls wore clothes they made in the Home Ec. Classes. The boys participated in many sports and also did much of the build- ing on the Homecoming float. With a year of experience now behind them the Class of 1972 is ready to take on their new title of Sophomores.
