These twenty-seven Seniors who have spent the past thirteen years together at Byron are gathered here for perhaps the last time. These thirteen years have been more prosperous and filled with luck than the number indicates. As they grew up together, these Seniors recalled many enjoyable and fun-filled events, all filling special places in their memories. Perhaps in a few years or even in the distant fu- ture, they may look back and remember those years as the best thirteen years of their lives. 20 UNDERCLASSMEN JUNIORS CLASS OFFICERS Advisor: Mr. Bullock President: Galen Crull Vice Pres.: Terry Seabold Secretary: Sherry Reed Treasurer: Linda Mrowiec Nancy Aliprandini Dave Calvert Neil Camling Robert Babbitt Carlson Donna Colbert Bonnie Brantner Greg Creek 22 NEXT TEAR IS THE BIG ONE Galen Crull Mike Eickman Steve Fridley Jilin Mike Gouker Paul Hoffman Nick Granberg Mike Lahr Gary Hartsfield Ann McNames Sharon Hickman Bonnie Medearis Dave Hoffman Dave Messenger Cheryl Moore 23 NEXT TEAR—CAPS AND GOWNS ,1 I fr-' v i - I . 8i A Rick Pendergrass Les Rarrieck Sherry Reed Terry Seabold 1 i w . Perhaps the two most satisfying accomplish- ments of the season were stopping Pecatonica and soundly defeating Stillman for the second consecutive year. This season, for the first time, outstanding defensive efforts by players were rewarded by membership in the Tiger Club. Byron's varsity basketball team, posting a 14-9 season record, produced a higher caliber of basketball than their record indicates. Byron's cagers were seemingly haunted by fate, as they lost several games by less than a four point margin. The squad was fortunate to possess a group spirit which generated a stronger desire to win. The loyal devotion of the fans provided added incentive for the team members, and encouraged them to fulfill their endeavors and achieve their goals. Among By- ron's accomplishments were a distinguished second in the Durand Holiday Tourna- ment, and the placement of Jim Hogan and Bill Lutz on the all-conference first team. A vote of thanks goes out to the student body for their undying support. 1966-1967 Season We Team They 61 Oregon 57 76 Hiawatha 60 66 Fr. Under the leadership of Coach Bill Vance, the fighting Cubs posted a respectable 14-8 season record. The Cubs claimed the Championship trophy in the 1st Byron Christmas Fresh-Soph Basketball Tournament. The hustling and scrappy Freshmen and Sophomores performed commendably throughout the basketball campaign. Rick Cupp must be given individual credit for his outstanding brand of basketball. Rick was high team scorer and floor general. The quality of basketball played by the Fresh-Soph certainly insures a continued high grade of basketball at Byron. 39 Oregon 40 46 Franklin Center 59 43 Kirkland 55 61 Stillman Valley 65 29 Franklin 39 64 Stillman Valley 53 47 Stillman Valley 42 48 Franklin Center 50 57 Milledgeville 43 41 Forreston 49 30 Forreston 37 51 Pecatonica 39 60 Pecatonica 43 68 Leaf River 49 63 Leaf River 33 65 Durand 49 40 Durand 35 43 Milledgeville 42 45 G enoa- Kingston 26 60 Ashton 48 58 Ashton 42 56 Polo 36 40 JUNIOR-VARSITY CHEERLEADERS From left to right: Debbie Siebken, Diane Greffe, Mary Mrowiec, Linda Erickson. 41 BASEBALL FRONT ROW left to right: R. Under the direction of Mr. Nelson in his first year of coaching, our baseball team finished the year with a very respectable 6-3 record, good enough for second place in the Route 72 Conference. In district play, the Tigers defeated Winnebago in the opening, but dropped the championship game against Rockford Auburn. Outstanding performers this year were Rick Hendee, Jim Hogan, Paul Hoffman, and Rick Cupp. 2 Guilford 6 1 Forreston 0 9 Pecetonica 0 11 Franklin Center 6 15 Leaf River 3 7 Winnebago 4 1 Auburn 4 3 Stillman Valley 6 1 Ashton 10 9 Millegeville 8 42 Let'er rip! The last meet of the year was the Route 72 Conference in which the team tallied 84 1 2 points to clinch the Conference title--for the third straight year. The closest contender was more than forty points down. Besides the Conference title, Byron also came out on top at the Forreston and Guilford relays. Again this year, two men went down to the State Championship at Champaign. Dan Harmon qualified at the district for the State meet in both the high and low hurdles while Bill Lutz won the broad jump earning him a trip down. Despite the fact that there were very few boys out for track and that they were plagued with injuries all year, the team did impressively well as the statistics plainly show. 45 SENIOR TRACK STARS' 46 Team Achievements: Guilford Relays Champions Forreston Relays Champions Conference Champions Won 8 Lost 1 M.V.P. Firsts were scored by David Saam, Pat Moore, Charles Helston, Bruce Dearborn, Roger Hulsebus, and Ron Hendrickson. Roger Hulsebus qualified for sectional by placing first in the district meet held at Dekalb. Roger also attended the Tournament of Champions at New Trier. A group of speech members also went to Bloomington to attend the State Speech Finals. Under the leadership of Mr. McNames, our adviser, the Speech Club produced a one-act play, Death of the Hired Man. 54 BAND FIRST ROW from left to right; N. Aliprandini, K. Pierson, B. Sherwood, D. During the football season, the members of the band performed difficult and exciting formations and maneuvers on the field for the specta- tors at half-time. The pep band, consisting of twenty members of the band, provided the entertainment at the basketball games. A special thrill for the band this year was its participation at High School Band Day at Northwestern University. The band marched during the half-time show and also saw an exciting college football game. Again this year the band marched in the Homecoming Parade and also participated in the Band contest and the Solo and Ensemble contest. Mr. Johnson, our advisor, has contributed much of his time and cooperation toward the band. We would like to express our thanks and appreciation to him. 55 DRILL TEAM STANDING--L to R--G. Swenson, S. Byron was honored by having our poster submitted by Charlene Forrester win first place. In October the Freshman girls were formally initiated into the chapter. In November the chapter sponsored the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance. The Caroling party in December was enjoyed by the girls as well as brightening the Christmas season for others. Beginning in January we had the secret-sis and in February we had a party. In March we were the guest of Leaf River for a joint skating party. F.H.A. week and the Spring Rally were the highlights of April. In May we elected the new officers. The final event was the picnic at White Pines. 57 GAA TOP ROW--L to R--V. Glawe, S. Jarrett, D. Numerous parties and soiree's highlighted the club's year. The masquerade dress-up at the Mardi Gras was considered by all as a complete success. This am- bitious club also sponsored a trip to the Midway Theater in Rockford in which the travelogue London and Paris was seen and thoroughly enjoyed. A sincere hope of many good times in the future is expressed. The club owes many thanks to their adviser, Mrs. Merson. 59 You'd never know we're winning! SNAPS AND AUTOGRAPHS One of our busiest moments. 60 HA UNTING TWILIGHT Queen Vicki and King Bill Sophomore Float—First Freshman Float--Third Court Fourth Attendants: Linda and A1 Third Attendants: Debbie and Rick King and Queen: Vicki and Bill Second Attendants: Linda and Paul First Attendants: Linda and Danny This year's Homecoming was sparked by the mysterious burning of the bonfire by person or persons unknown. The students had to work diligently to replace the immense pile of wood. All afternoon trucks full of wood roared back and forth from any donator to the field. The entire school was united in this cause. After the an- nouncement of the king, queen, and court, the bonfire was officially lit on Friday night and the ensuing cere- mony was a huge success. The parade on the following day was tremendous. The Sophomore float complete with its working model of the guillotine, placed first. The Seniors were in hot pursuit with their stewed cardinal being prepared by the tiger. Third place went to the Freshmen, and the Juniors tailed. Varsity Club's coffin, entered as a float, failed to place in the top five. On Saturday night, the Tigers were hotter than the bonfire. They were united in effort and determination to beat Stillman. The Tigers scored 19 points and held Stillman to a meager 6 points. The theme of the dance following the game was Haunting Twilight. The evening was high-lighted by the coronation of Queen Vicki and King Bill. 63 Fancy meeting you here! Best Dressed Couple (?) SADIE HA W KINS DANCE Captured! 64 SWEETHEART BALL They could have danced all night. Wake up! You're puttin' me on! Mr. Bullock our adviser? The Junior Dance for this year was held March 4,1967, from 8:00 till 11:30 p.m. The theme was Sweetheart Ball. Decorations consisted of hearts and cupids on the stage with potted shrubbery and a false ceiling on the floor. Perry Long's combo provided entertainment and refreshments were provided by the Junior Class. The Junior Class appreciates the help of its ad- viser Mr. Bullock and Mrs. Brantner who donated the flowers. 65 “THE LITTLE DOG LA UGH ED” The Senior Class Play, The Little Dog Laughed, was held on the 7th and 8th of April after three weeks of hard practice. The Little Dog Laughed is the story of a Sophomore college student who returns home and starts psychoanalyzing those around her. The out- come is rather humorous. It all turns out for the best, however, as she succeeds in righting all of her wrongs. Thanks to the directing of Mr. Bullock and the capable acting of the leads played by Kathy Wilmarth, Jim Rush, Kathy Sympson, Steve Storz, Rita Forrester, and Bill Hahn, the play was a huge success and well re- ceived. 66 SENIOR JUNIOR BANQUET The annual Junior-Senior Banquet was held at the Oregon Country Club, May 2, 1967. A delicious meal was served as a prelude of things to come. To make the evening more memorable, Bill Carlson gave the invocation, Galen Crull welcomed the senior class, and Chuck Hendrickson thanked those of the junior class on behalf of the seniors. Master of Ceremonies, Paul Hoffman, introduced Cindy Nighswonger and Sherry Reed who gave the Senior prophecy, and Gary Hartsfield who gave the after-dinner speech. The members of the committee who made the evening so enjoyable were Pam Wells, Nancy Aliprandini, Linda Mrowiec, Cheryl Moore, Gary Hartsfield, Sherry Reed, Cindy Nighswonger, Bill Carlson, Randy Auker, Sharon Hickman, and Pat Wells. 67 The theme of the 1967 May Dance was Stair- way to the Stars. Juniors and Seniors and their dates took part in the Grand March. May Queen and King for 1966, Cathy Hoarth and Dean Ferb, crowned this year's Queen and King, Linda Svartoien and Bill Hahn. The court was as follows: 1st attendants Vicki Gouker and Dan Harmon, 2nd attendants Susan Etnyre and Rick Hendee, 3rd attendants Debbie Watts and Bill Lutz, and 4th attendants Sheila Nighswonger and Steve Storz. John Knutson sang The Shadow of Your Smile and Helen Strub played a flute solo for the Queen and her court. Also presented in honor of Queen Linda was the traditional May Pole dance performed by the following Junior girls: Pat Wells--Nancy Aliprandini, Pam Wells--Char- lene Forrester, Sharon Hickman--Cindy Nighs- wonger, Phyllis Whipple, Ann McNames--Sherry Reed, Cheryl Moore, Bonnie Brantner--Mary Miller, Donna Colbert--Linda Smith and Linda Mrowiec--Barb Miller. 68 GRADUATION On Monday night May 29, 1967, fifty-four members of the Byron High School Senior class received their diplomas, thus ending their routine school years and beginning a new way of life. Speakers for this year were Sheila Nighswonger, valedic- torian, and Bernard Goeking, salutatorian. The crowded halls of B.H.S. will miss this smiling and ever-so-active class, and we wish them all the luck in the world in whatever they do.
