Byron shared a first place tie with Stillman Valley at the District Speech Meet held at DeKalb. Byron placed seven speakers. These people entered sectional competition at Arlington Heights, along with Byron's play, The Lark, which took first place in the dramatics festival at DeKalb. The people who advanced to the Sectional were: Mary Humm............................................Original Oration Joan McLennan...................................After Dinner Speaking Valerie Dearborn................................................ Verse Janet Rowe.............................................Serious Reading J. P. Lundgren..........................................Radio Speaking Charles Quarton................................Extemporaneous Speaking Mike Dennis..........................................Humorous Reading John Lundgren was the only individual speaker who placed at the Sectional Meet. He placed fourth in radio speaking. Freeport took the honors and clinched first place, Evanston captured second place, and Stillman Valley took third at the Sectional contest. The play. Speech Byron speakers took second place with 184 points at an invitational speech meet held at Waukegan. Waukegan, the host school, took first place honors and Thorton Fractional won third place. This was the second year Byron was invited to the meet. Byron entered 28 speakers in the contest. Those speakers placing first are listed below: Valerie Dearborn, Martha Merson, Verse; J. P. Lundgren, Serious; Jack Milburn, Mike Dennis, Humorous; Mary Humm, Original Oration; Linda Faulkner, Oration; Pat Allen, Joan McLennan, After Dinner. FIRST ROW: P. Allen, J. Rowe, J. King, J. Johnson. J. Lundgren. SECOND ROW: J. Noyes, L. Faulkner, V. Dearborn, J. Calvert, Mr. Sunderman, D. Hogan. THIRD ROW; L. Rieken, M. Merson. J. McLennon. FOURTH ROW: L. Woods, C. Quarton, J. Ntilbum, B. Bonne, J. Dennis. J. Rowe, D. Nally, B. Toops, P. Wonzong. Stillman Valley speakers edged Byron in the Route 72 speech meet held at Byron by a score of 57-54. This was Mr. Sunderman's first loss in the conference in the past 13 years. Byron's one-act play took first place, however. Those speakers advancing to district were: Joan McLennan, After Dinner; Valerie Dearborn, Verse; Judy Rowe, Monologue; Linda Faulkner, Oration; Mary Humm, Original Oration; J. P.
