Bif- Wlemoniei oj 1959 Co-Editors Janet Rowe Judy Rowe Business Manager Mary Humm Advisor John Birkholz 3onewond This 1959 edition of the BY-HI has been published with but one objective: to capture a year between its covers. While we know that life at Byron High is a mul- titude of realities which are too intangible to be related in black and white, perhaps in some small way we can preserve the friendships which we hold so dearly. If this book will serve as a bridge to the past and bring to mind the priceless memories of the joys and pleasures of the year just gone by, it will have served its purpose. There are many people without whose efforts this book would not have been possible. The staff would like to thank them all. With these thoughts, we proudly present to you your 1959 BY-HI. THE BY-HI STAFF Dedication We, the 1959 graduation class of Byron High School, proudly and sincerely dedicate our yearbook to the teachers of the Byron Community Schools. Through the past 12 years they have helped us over many bumps in the road of life. There are so many we wish to thank for the help and guidance given us in our school career. We just want to say an appreciated and genuine THANK YOU. 2 3 SENIORS 44 C ai ei ON OUR WAY TO CLASS Like The Halls of Montezuma the halls of Byron High will remain famous in the memory of all who have traveled there. As year follows year, a certain pattern repeats itself. As each new year begins, new faces greet us. The freshmen, strange and uncertain wrestle with locker combinations and unfamiliar class schedules. In a few weeks, however, uncertainty disappears and, as one student body, we fill the halls to overflowing with hurried dashes from class to class. Locker mates meet and carry on a hectic, mad scramble for books and supplies. Like friends on a busy street, students pause to greet a classmate or exchange the latest news. News bulletins flash up and down the corridors and are thus carried from one end of the building to the other. The very walls will remain impressed upon our memories. The ever changing placards command attention. Posters and signs constantly announce coming events. As we walk down other halls in years to come, it is safe to say that we will many times be reminded of the crowded corridors of Byron High School. 4 Cfaaaea Homemakers of the Future The first weeks in Home Economics were filled with many experiences. Those girls who at the beginning of the year could not sew a straight seam or even boil water were completely reformed. At the end of the year the girls emerged brilliant seamstresses, wonderful cooks—the homemakers of the future. Office Practice Class at Work 5 Clamed The General Business class under Mr. Varblesdirection explored the fields of business—money, banking, savings and investments, insurance, and other phases of business. By the end of the year the students had mastered the fundamentals of business and were prepared to do advance work in bookkeeping, shorthand, typewriting, and economics. Mrs. Merson and English Four class 6 Adminiztnation HAROLD V. LUNDGREN, our superintendent for the past six years, has a background of twenty-six years of teaching and administra- tive work. Friday was Orange Black day at B.C.H.S. and everyone was wearing an oversized price tag printed with Go Tigers, Beat Indians. On Friday night the crowning of the king and queen and a motorcade of the royal court around the field started the evening off. At halftime, the marching band put on a special show. Although Byron's team put up a terrific struggle, the Winnebago Indians became over- powering and won the game. A dance, following the game, was held in the gym where many acquaintances were renewed by Byron Alumni. The weekend proved to be a busy and exciting one for Byron students. lune in 7anuanif Judy Jerry Judy J.P. Joyce Roger The annual Junior Dance was held on January 31 in the gym. This year's theme was June in January. The decorations had a spring background. There was an excellent crowd at the dance, and everyone seemed to enjoy the music furnished by Jim Eckloff. This is the occasion when the girls ask the boys and must obey their every wish. The night proved to be a lot of fun, in- cluding dancing and getting hitched by Marryin1 Sam. Henry. Sponsored by HAMER'S GRILL HAMER'S STANDARD SERVICE 43 The Varsity Club is a new organization at Byron High School this year. The club is composed of all the varsity letter winners of the major sports at Byron; football, baseball, basketball, and track. The officers of the club are: Jerry Dennis.............................President Tom Harmon..........................Vice-President Jerry Skelly...................Secretary-Treasurer Coach Parks................................Advisor And Jhen Suddenly The Senior Class of 1959 has been in school thirteen years. We were the first class to attend kindergarten. Our parents furnished the equipment and the school hired the teacher. Since then the kindergarten has grown and become an important part of the school. Since our class was much larger than preceding classes it was split into two sections when we entered the first grade. All through school we were divided into two groups until we entered high school and even then most of our classes were divided into two sections. Our class was also the first to graduate from the new grade school. We recall many happy memories during our years at the old school, but the new school was a welcome addition. Since entering school there have been many members of our class who have moved but we have gained almost as many new members. Our class began with approximately forty-eight members and at present we have forty members in our class. Sixteen of us have gone through thirteen years of school together at Byron. Mr. Quarton informed us when we were soph- omores that our class was the first all-girl biology class he has had since he has been teaching in Byron, and probably the only one in the history of Byron High School. We hope that we have contributed a small part of what we have gained from our years in school. We hope that the world will accept us and that we can give the world something in return, a fine group of citizens. Sponsored by DR. R. N. JARRETT HELSDON'S TAVERN We Wene Seniona FIRST ROW: W.
