Junior Varsity Girls warm up before a game. During the 72-73 Basketball sea- son, Byrdtown Academy took steps to improve it's basketball program. Among these steps was the creation of a girl's junior varsity basketball team. The coach for this team is Mrs. Pat Smith, assisted by Christy Godfrey. In their first sea- son they were led by their team captain Anna Sherrill, high scorer for the season. Other scorers this year were Wendy Smith and Tar- this Sherrill. Opponents included Cheraw and Darlington Academys. Several players were promoted to the Girls varsity team, in the latter part of the season. 62

The Bulldogs 1973 basketball season proved to be the most suc- cessful in the history of the team. This year the team won three times as many games than in any other season. Also established this year was the longest winning streak, four games. We started the win- ning streak with a one point victory over Cheraw Academy. The sec- ond game of the winning streak was against Avalon. In this game the Bulldogs simply outplayed their opposition and defeated them by twenty-six points. The third game was again against Cheraw, which we won by seven points. The fourth win was over Emmanuel in our Homecoming game. ]ohn Howie was named the most valuable player for 1972. 61
