THE 1971 CHALLENGER BYRDTOWN ACADEMY HARTSVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA VOLUME I PEOPLE—7 ORGANIZATIONS—30 ADVERTISEMENTS—33 Marks the beginning GROUNDBREAKING—The ground breaking (.t our school was in June 1970. Here are a few of the people that made our school possible. By this picture we can see that we have come a long way. The people in the community have built this school. We are very proud of our school and for what it stands. We have met many challenges this year. Our lives have changed in many different ways. We have met many new people and made many new friends. This is a very small school, but loved by all. We will see this school progress to a very large one, that our children will come to and love as much as we do. The staff of the CHALLENGER takes great pride in dedicating the 1970-1971 volume of the CHAL- LENGER to Mr. Paul Flowers for his work and co- operation for the CHALLENGER and the develop- ment of BYRDTOWN ACADEMY. He is not only a dedicated leader, but he is also a helpful and sincere guide to the student body. To you Mr. Paul Flowers whom we respect for the example you have set for us in the everyday school life, we give you our sincere thanks. We the yearbook staff of Byrdtown Academy have chosen to have our first yearbook in REMEMBERANCE of Mr. Eugene Byrd. He worked very hard helping build our school and he will always be remembered as someone who was very dedicated in getting our school started. Mr. Eugene Byrd 3 4 Students On Campus! Routine activities in a day at Byrd town Academy! One of our favorite sports is VOLLEYBALL! The first graders check books out the library. Grant enjoys the microscope. Administration and Faculty In this our first year the enthusi- astic leadership of our Headmaster, Mr. Richard Griggs, was tremen- dously contagious. Being a lifelong resident of the community, he has the student, the school, and the over-all academis outlook at heart. Mrs. Cranford performs many important duties! Mrs. W. H. Godfrey teaches math in the fifth and sixth grades. She has proved to be a real asset to the school. The first grade is taught by Mrs. P. Moody. She is a graduate of the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Elaine Rhynes enjoys teaching the Kindergarten. Another kindergarten teacher is Mrs. Miriam Griggs. Mrs. Nevin Cabe, a “busy” woman, teaches the fifth and sixth graders and typing. She received her B.A. degree from Brenau College and her M.F.A. from the University of Georgia. 9 The Faculty has high goals. Mrs. Edna Rudisell, third grade teacher, is a graduate of Coker College. A popular teacher among the high school students, Mrs. Patsy B. Mattews teaches I Mrs. Gillian, a fifth and sixth Mrs. Brenda Griggs, A grade teacher, enjoyed her science teacher, was an asset students very much. to school. A great help in the fifth and sixth graders is Mrs. Amelia Smith. 10 Miss Lula Robinson teaches the fourth graders. She is a graduate of Winthrop College. The second grade is taught by Miss Ottie Lee Robinson, who received her degree from Winthrop College. Mr. Tommy Blackmon, a graduate of The University of South Carolina, has enjoyed teaching math and economics. Mrs. Ann Marie Hunter teachers French and English. She is a grad- uate of Erskine College. Mr. Dick Allison, a graduate of Davidson College, enthusiastically taught science. 1) The Juniors look forward to being proud Seniors. Junior class officers: left to right.
