SE ASONAL FOOTBALL REVIEW Bynum High School's Bulldogs ushered in a new sports era in 1950 with the first football team in their tradition - rich athletic history. Coach Jack Herring, former Hillsboro and T.C.U. star, became the new grid teacher. His hard-hitting Bulldogs made up with spirit what they lacked in experience. Herring urged his players to show the same fighting spirit that Bynum's fine basketball teams had shown down through the years. They did. Captain Bobby Perry and Co-captain Jack Havis headed Bynum's fighting line. Pass- catching Melvin Bielefeldt and tackle Weldon Giebler played important roles. Mack Roden, Dean Lowe and center Wallace Zoch rounded out the Bulldog forward wall. Jolting Jimmy Taylor headed the Bynum backfield as a linebacker and runner. Passer- punter Clyde Wiley quarterbacked the Bulldogs. Gene Cain, a neat runner, rounded out the backfield along with Jimmy Sonnenberg. Line reserves included Nick Shaw, James Standly, Richard Greer and Harmon Hoker. Backfield substitutes indluded Hubert Dossey, Ned Cole and Melvin Huse. Bynum reached their season's peak with victories over Iredell, Frost and Italy. Iredell fell, 6-0, before the Bulldogs in the campaign opener. Improving fast. Bynum later swamped Fighting Frost, 25-7. Near the season's end, Bynum whipped rival Italy, 25-21. Back Gene Cain scored Bynum's first touchdown of all-time, racing more than 50 yards against Iredell. Cain became Bynum's first football immortal by taking a target- sure screen pass from Hubert Dossey. Fans went wild as Cain raced over and the 1950 sea- son was underway with victory. Only Bynum's second half comeback against Italy approached C ain's history-making touchdown as the season's highlight. The gridsters lost games that might have been. They were games that could have gone either way. Only one or two rivals completely outclassed Bynum during the season. Sheer inexperience--not lack of fight--cost Bynum most of the games lost. The Bulldogs, throughout District 22-B, were highly regarded as a fighting dangerous team. We will likely have a stronger team in 1951, Herring said reviewing the season. Our team will be lighter but more experienced. All in all, most fans felt that the 1950 season was a successful one for the new Bynum football team.
