Passing a tall, distinguished, wealthy looking man on the sidewalk, a young school girl pre- pares to conhont him. Aker all, he's wealthy- looking, it is very unusual for a person on Byng campus to have money the first semester of school. The months Hom August to December have been newly designated as the fund-raising months at Byng. Running aher the man, the young girl digs several slips of paper out of her school bag. Ex-Excuse me, sir, the young girl stammers as the stranger turns around. Would you like to buy a raffle ticket for a 4 foot high stuffed animal? The man smiles and hands over a dollar bill. Taking the ticket Hom the girl he nods and begins walking away, Wait. ' the girl yells after him, How about a ticket for a carwash? The man turns around, smiles polite- ly, and hands the girl two more bills in exchange for another ticket. And how about a ticket for a flowervase for your wife? the girl prompts as the man digs in his pocket again. 'And a top quality stereo . . . This continues until the annoyed man pulls his empty pocket wrong- side out and turns to walk away. I can give you time to go to the bank! the girl yells to the retreating form who is now like everyone else on Byng campus. This is a common episode which anyone at Byng during the first semester can relate to. Tickets are sold for the raffling of everything from turkeys to TV's, Food is sold, magazines are sold,' shirts are sold, knick-knacks are sold,' pins are sold, cards are sold . . . You name it,' Pirates sell it. Carwashes, bowl -a-thons, dances, a chili supper, a skate-a-thon are all held annu- ally for fund-raising events. Nearly every organized group at Byng School raises money for its activities, and there are quite a few organizations. It would fill a whole page to list all the groups who raise money, but the Mr. 8: Miss BHS contest would definitely be at the top. This year's BHS candidates together raised a total of 15,822.04 Seventh graders, Ryan Feazle and Mendy Morgan, raised 3153.055 Brandon Parks and Shannon Smith, eighth graders, raised 1820.012 ninth grade candidates, Deryck Parks and jennifer Timmons, raised a total of I1216.17, Scotty Gannon and Sherri Mitchell of tenth grade raised 11411505 juniors, Eliaabeth Willis and Geoffrey Humphers brought 51602505 and last, Seniors Denise Erwin and Robby Lee raised 5618. 78.
