However, as time passed by, we began to kick back and enjoy ourselves - not necessarily because we were thrilled with having hzcts crammed into our tiny brains, sitting at a desk for six hours, or dragging a bag stuffed full of books back home, but rather, the reason we returned to school the following days, weeks, and years I aside Hom the eminent federal law and threats from our parents 2 was because ofthe fun things that go on there. You know what these things are - the Laces made behind teachers' backs, the coy looks exchanged in the halls, the papers passed from chair to chair whenever a teacher wasn 't looking, and ofcourse along with all those books in that bookbag, notes about who saw johnny making eyes at Sally. These are just a few ofthe things that endear the prison-like building to our hearts, and it is to these things that we dedicate our yearbook theme. Your alarm goes off at ZOO a.m. Without even opening your eyes, you lik one arm to hit the snooze button and roll over. At 7:09 your alarm goes off again. You roll over, hit snooze and doze off once again. You repeat this proce- dure every nine minutes until you open one eye to see that it's 7:27. Its definitely one of THOSE days! The day progresses progessively worse, and several times you scowl as you remember the title page of this yearbook which says we go to school just for the fun of it. With this thought in mind, you sarcastically mumble to yourself 'Are we having fun yet? Howeven there are some things, the feel- ings, that are difficult to capture. These feelings - a feeling of pride in your school, an extremely funny moment, a sense of ac- complishment or dekat - are very strong emotions usually lost in the hub-bub of other school activities recorded in the year- book. Yet many hail to realize that it is precisely these emotions that determine who you are and what you expect from life and describe your entire school career with - out words. Feelings - how simple, yet piercing they can be. Remember that overwhelming sense ofjubilation after winning state? You could hardly contain the excitement or suppress the tears which released all of the long months of hard work. Or when losing that crucial game, remember the sense of loss and heartache felt when seeing tears of frus- tration and dekat falling Hom our players' hzces. On a more pleasant note, remember the swell of pride when you received that unex- pected A in Biology? How about those late nights at a lriendlv house when everything seems funny and no one can go to sleep for laughing. Don 't forget the feeling when you had just gotten a date with that special person, and you just wanted to shout with excitement. Remember these feelings, the strong emotions, the memories they created. Re- member the good times, the bad times. Remember school. Laura Barrick, Senior Suzi Hall, Smior Stacy Pendergralt, junior Passing a tall, distinguished, wealthy looking man on the sidewalk, a young school girl pre- pares to conhont him. Aker all, he's wealthy- looking, it is very unusual for a person on Byng campus to have money the first semester of school. The months Hom August to December have been newly designated as the fund-raising months at Byng. Running aher the man, the young girl digs several slips of paper out of her school bag. Ex-Excuse me, sir, the young girl stammers as the stranger turns around. Would you like to buy a raffle ticket for a 4 foot high stuffed animal? The man smiles and hands over a dollar bill. Taking the ticket Hom the girl he nods and begins walking away, Wait. ' the girl yells after him, How about a ticket for a carwash? The man turns around, smiles polite- ly, and hands the girl two more bills in exchange for another ticket. And how about a ticket for a flowervase for your wife? the girl prompts as the man digs in his pocket again. 'And a top quality stereo . . . This continues until the annoyed man pulls his empty pocket wrong- side out and turns to walk away. I can give you time to go to the bank! the girl yells to the retreating form who is now like everyone else on Byng campus. This is a common episode which anyone at Byng during the first semester can relate to. Tickets are sold for the raffling of everything from turkeys to TV's, Food is sold, magazines are sold,' shirts are sold, knick-knacks are sold,' pins are sold, cards are sold . . . You name it,' Pirates sell it. Carwashes, bowl -a-thons, dances, a chili supper, a skate-a-thon are all held annu- ally for fund-raising events. Nearly every organized group at Byng School raises money for its activities, and there are quite a few organizations. It would fill a whole page to list all the groups who raise money, but the Mr. 8: Miss BHS contest would definitely be at the top. This year's BHS candidates together raised a total of 15,822.04 Seventh graders, Ryan Feazle and Mendy Morgan, raised 3153.055 Brandon Parks and Shannon Smith, eighth graders, raised 1820.012 ninth grade candidates, Deryck Parks and jennifer Timmons, raised a total of I1216.17, Scotty Gannon and Sherri Mitchell of tenth grade raised 11411505 juniors, Eliaabeth Willis and Geoffrey Humphers brought 51602505 and last, Seniors Denise Erwin and Robby Lee raised 5618. 78. However, winners or losers, this contest takes place all in fun, right? Right? Yeah, yeeaahh, that's the ticket. ' Thats I -' 7 . A. 1 . I lf fT'7'T'f'T - . I: '.,,-- . ,fa - l 'fd H. 'Being alone, in the eyes of a teenager, is probably one of the worst things that could happen to anyone! 'Loneliness' . . . it's just plain boring! In other words, it's an unpleasura- ble monotony. So therefore, you will very sel- dom catch any sane' teenager letting this type of monotonous unpleasure happen! How do they do this', you ask? Its simple, all you have to do is pick up the telephone, get together, and have a crazy time! Hmmm! Have you ever wondered just exact- ly how rich the youth of America are making the people at Southwestern Bell? We must keep them busy! At our school alone, there are 810 students in the 7 through 12 grades. Each of which talks on the phone about an average of two hours a day a piece, some of them even more. So this means, that at any given time, there are at least 42 people on the phone lines at one time. That's just from our school, think about how many teenages are on the phone at the same time rn Oklahoma! All seriousness aside, though, there is some- thing good coming out of all this! 'Friendships' . . . special relationships that a young person will remember for a lifetime! High school days are the best times of a person's life. Times of cruisinl parties, slee- povers, or just plain hangin' out! But you don 't do these things by yourself you do them with 'hiendsll You can laugh with H-iends, you can cry with them. You can listen to their problems and they can listen to yours. So the next time you get bored, just call up a friend and create some memories that will last a lifetime! 2 tis 1 Lt ' . s rr. iaiafist 'Nl N1 D Top leit- Pirates are number I! When the bell rings, the halls turn into a huge sea of young, eager faces seeking to learn new things and develop their talents. Aside Hom it being a place of learning, its a wa y of life. We Te just a big tamily, and like any family, we stick together. Even though there are times of grief, discouragement, and unhappiness, the good times outweigh the bad times. If the walls could talk, they could tell stories of joy and defeat, happiness and sorrow, and of learning how to lose gracefully as well as winning. You would probably be reminded that 'attitude makes the difference and determination is the key to success. People say this is the most careHee time of our lives. Yes, we do having loving parents, supportive teachers, and loyal Hiends which we appreciate. But, we struggle with choices and decisions every day, hoping to make the right ones. Only time will tell. We received a trophy for first place in window decorations for Christmas. The students painted the Ada Evening News' windows. We have also done window decorations and demonstrations at nursing homes during the year. 'My students enjoy competing. It also reminds me of the long hours spent memorizing lines in the bathroom, the longer evenings of rehearsals, and the longest days of waiting in anticipation for that opening performance. But just ask any student of judy Tipton s Drama department if the hard work is worth it and youll hear a resounding YES! The production of West Side Story was the first undertaking ofthe year. It is considered to be one of Broadway 's most difficult musicals both in the instrumental and choreographical aspects, but thanks to the dedication of many students and teachers, all seven performances were a success. The musical score, referred to by many as an orchestral nightmare, couldn 't have been played successfully without the direction of Rozzie Purdy. Luanne Weiss, a local dance instructor, had to be brought in to teach us a few Puerto Rican moves along with many other difficult steps. Oh, what a sense of accomplishment we felt when the guys could finally lih the girls. The days and days spent rehearsing gave the cast a chance to develop many close relationships. These bonds are typical of the closness shared in drama year round. Without this closeness, we would never ha ve been able to tolerate each other at those Z00a.m. makeup calls. Due to the popularity of drama, enrollment nearly doubled, thus another class had to be added. Drama I is taken by most students making their debut on the stage, and the class is filled with many talented underclassman. To give these new members some extra help and to promote unity within drama, the traternity Beta Ahsha Phi fByng Actors and Players Q was formed. Members of Drama II selected pledges who were pinned at an initiation ceremony. The inductees Raced many tests and trials, not too abusive, to become pledges. They all passed to join the ranks ofa group rich in tradition, yet richer in a sense of pride in their accomplishments. Only through our hard work do we take pride in what we do. Our accomplishments consist of trying to please you, the audience. We struggle for that one reward only you can give, your applause. Headaches, sleepless nights, bald spots on heads, and fistfuls of hair - such things are familiar to editors. Fortunately for me, I share stress with my co-editor, Dana Sayre. Although having two editors does not alleviate the pressure, the good part is that if our yearbook flops, theres someone else to blame it on! Dana and I were experiencing the previously-mentioned sgns of stress when we realized that our first deadline was a week away and one whole sgnature I 16 pafesj was not even done. Now Dana and I are rather level -headed girlsg we know how to handle pressure - we panic, We really panicked when we found our color dead ine upon us. What are we going to do? we whinned. We presented the problem to our staff and some idiot suggested a lock-in on Friday night to complete our pages. Seeing no altemative, we agreed. At that time neither Dana nor I had a date for Friday night. We are editors loyal to our staff our advisor, and to the cause of Byng 's best-ever yearbook. When we got an invitation to go on a date Friday night, our priorities were firmly in place. We had no problem reaching a decision on where to spend the early part of the evening. We had a really good time with our dates Friday nghg and at about midnight we dragged ourselves into the yearbook lock-in. Amidst cries of Where have you been?'1 'ISO glad our editors could make it! and other sarcastic remarks, we settled into work. After staring at the one sentence I had written an hour ago and realizing that the Sprite I 'd been drinking was caffeine-Hee, I grabbed someone's blanket and tmdged back to the storeroom. My Ezithful co-editor had already preceded me and was slumped zombie-like in a chair. I curled up on a few boxes and fell asleep. I awoke an our later to find my nose moussed up. I complained loudly and made scathing remarks about immaturity, but nobody admitted wielding the mousse can. I went back to work and worked dilgently for four straght hours. Layouts were designed, copy was written, and pic- tures were printed. By 6 a.m. we lacked taking only one picture and writing one article. As the sun rose that Saturday moming, so did our spirits. Deciding we 'd worked hard enough, some staff members left, some sacked out, and Dana and I breathed a sigh of relief We had lived through the nght and actually accom- plished something. So, that was the unprecedented yearbook all-nighter which occurred last weekend. Deadline is now three days away. Today our dear advisor, Mary Willis, suggested we change pages sur and seven. Now we must take, develop, and print more pictures, write more copy and draw other layouts. Robby, can you get starred on this layout? 'Eric, please process that film. Through the combined effort of seventeen Gculty members for grades two through four, students ha ve stayed in- volved in school affairs and achieved academically. First, two new programs ha ve proved the students more individual attention. A supplemental math class to reinforce classroom instruction was taught by entry- year teacher Mrs. Kathy LoHon. Addi- tionally, the classroom teachers used the Computer Lab to maintain skills introduced to students in the classroom. Two musical productions coordinated by elemen- tary music director Kathy Lokon involved all 289 elementary students: At Thanksgiving, students generous contributions of food filled nine baskets. In March, students collected and donated over J2000 to jump-Rope- for-Heart, a unified AHA effort coordinated by janice Hobbs. In April, two fourth graders Lori Starkey and Austin Orphan won the first Byng Direct Pee Wee Spelling Contest. Four awards assemblies honored students who were scholastic achievers as well as those with perfect attendance. Throughout the entire year, parents stayed in close contact with the teachers and me. Their support and trust for the Byng School system made our job easier and their chil- d nn s. 1' , ren wi er ,lj Z,4,z,d- A Betty Rose Allred .N f,.f. ' f i . N X K I 0 Q . i I ' V Z3 'Q lf! I finally find my locker the minute the bell rings for class. Digging through the books and notes to find the books that I need, I find that one book that has been hiding from me. I slam my locker closed and go with the flow of the crowd to my classroom, which, thank- goodness, is nearby. I ease into my seat so that I am not noticed by the teacher who is starting to take role call. I must look uptight because one of my friends whispers across the isle, Relax, this teacher isn't as strict as the last one we had. Iinally, lunch time! We raced up the hill only to find all the lines reached the door. Seeing that the regular line was moving Easter, we choose it. Aker waiting for what seemed like a life-time, we received our trays. We found a table and began eating when we noticed that it was already time to go back to class. We wolfed down our last bites and raced back down the hill to start all over again with trying to find books and classes in this new world. Renee? I am sure that there will be a lot of ad- justments to make. A perfect minature rocket launch and a successful mock space shuttle mission helped Schafer to win one of three awards given at the camp. Oflicials told her she had won the Right Stuff A ward for beihg one step ahead ofthe other kids. Schakrs mother, Carla Murray, said weekend space camps ha ve been added because of increased applications this year. A movie which had the camp as its sertuzg was released a few months ago sparking even more interest in the govemment-sponsored camp where participants are allowed to experience many o the same types of training given to U.S. astronauts. Although the weekend session was half as long as the regular session, Schafer said the campers not only ,participated in the three mam events: mmiture nocket launch, decision making for a large space stmcrure and mock s uttle mission, but visited the museum, saw movies in the space dome and even had free time. The group was also taken on a tour of the Marshall Space Center in Huntsville where the shuttle and its missions are designed. Schakr was cast as a Mission .Tecialist 1 and her part in the mock mission consisted ofa walk in space in the cargo bay section ofthe shuttle simu tor. Even though actual weghtlessness is not part ofthe simulation, Schafer practiced on the five degrees of freedom, a machine which simulates walking th space, in preparation for the shuttle simulation. She also wore a space suit during the exercise which was a success for her team, the Mercury Team. Schafer was the only Oklahoman among the 24 youths attending last weekend is space camf session where she was one of seven girls. Her goal is to be a pilot someday which, she added hopefully, could lea to becoming an astronaut. Schafer said she was not frightened or apprehensive durmg 2 1X2 days of events, and recommends the camp to everyone. At the end of the fourth grade yeaig all ofthe instruments in the band were demonstrated to the students. In order for the students to know the number of instruments allowed for each section, the director ga ve them a complete instrumentation list for the concert band. When school began in the Qll, director Rozzie Purdy approved their instrument selections. As the students begin their study, emphasis is given to correct posture, correct hand position and proper mouthpiece placement. Each of the three tamilies of instruments: brass, woodwind and percussion, are discussed in detail. The students work out of two books. Band Today and Technic Today . The band rehearses Monday through Thursday and has a weekly audition in which each student receives a grade and a chair placement in his section. The students are also graded on a weekly practice cant however the quality of practice time is emphasized the same as the quanity of practice time, The band is preparing for several concerts and a contest in the spring. The contest includes full concert band solos and ensembles. Band also teaches lihh grade students responsibility, dependability and self discipline. 'Students possessing these qualities will not only be good band students but also good students in all of their classes, Miss Purdy says. Different styles of music are also studied so the student will have a broader knowledge of all kinds of music. When asked what he likes most about America, Dag answered, Cheap hamburgers, cheap gasoline, the American cars, and the better TV programs. When asked about the least like, he replied The high crime rate and the amount of drug usage. He says that one of the hardest things to get used to was all the slang words we use. Dag enjoys watching the Benny Hill Show and sports programs. He likes listening to rock music and he enjoys the nature. Dag reads Garfield and Beatle Bailey regularly. Waall, drawls the clown, carrying a cooler with Budweiser written all over it, 'Tm gonna have me a party! Well, did you know theres something dripping Hom your cooler? the an- nouncer inquires, as a yellowish liquid begins leaking out ofthe cooler. Holding the cooler up above his head, the clown frantically drinks the liquid. When the yel- lowish liquid stops pour- ing Hom the container, the clown opens the cooler to investigate. As he pulls back the lid, a little white toy poodle V r V I I jumps out. The crowd goes crazy with laughter. Such things earn rodeo clown DeWayne Friar his livelihood. During the summer of1984i Dewayne decided the bull -riding I his previous hobbyj was making him no money. It was then he made his decision to go to a bullfighting school. DeWayne attended such a school that fall. There he learned the primary rule in bulllighting: 'If the cowboys gets hung up, I risk my life for his. De Wayne claims that this principle makes him nervous, but it doesn't discourage him. 'I enjoy what I do. Its exciting! Along with is previously mentioned toy poodle, DeWayne also does acts with his mule named Mary IThat2s my mom is name too, laughs De Wayne. 2 He keeps the crowd laughing all the time. But its not all fun and games, there is danger involved too. You have to get as close to the bull as you can without getting hit. You ha ve to be aggressive in saving your cowboysg a lot of quick thinking is involved. DeWayne had a prime example of this when his pants fell down in the middle ofthe arena. Plus, he has to think up his own acts. 'T have been embarrassed a lot of times, he claims with a grin. DeWayne plans to make his living at rodeo clowning. He will attend bullfighting school again this spring. He presently spends a lot of time perform - ing at rodeos. In the spring, he will ha ve one almost every weekend. So rar, his biggest rodeo was in Ft. Worth where 40000 people attended. When asked his feelings concerning his job, DeWayne states, 'Y like embarrassing people and being the center of attention. They have been busy, filled with emotions Hom hysteria to elation, and they have brought about a personal triumph for all those involved. I owe a great debt to each of m y staff mem bers. They ha ve persevered when others would have quit. I appreciate their long hours of work and attention to detail. Words of appreciation seem a small token for my co-editors, Dana Sayre and Terry Tamashiro. Their devotion, determination and vision of what could be have served as a source of inspiration for all of us. Someone once told me, 'nothing the heart gives away is lost. It lives in the hearts of others. The 1987 Pirate staff ga ve much, and my heart is full from their gift of dedication. Mary Willis Yearbook adviser JSIWJKYIH EWJWQW EDF frgyw As, w ?f MV K WWW 'W .
