he Rocking Chalr The old rocking chalr s1ts 1U the parlor,st11l and unused I wonder as it sits t ere,if it's thlnking about all the things it has seen About the time when Grandmother's niece nearly died of whooplng cough and Grandmother sat and rocked her all n1ght And the time when Johnny, playing cowboys and lndians jumped into lt and broke both it's rockers And all the merry times at Chrlstmas when the famlly was there together I wonder lf 1t's th1nk1ng these tY1HgS and many others Don't you9 Joyce Dean '51 1-Q I N7 u '1 5 Quick Thlnklng Joe owned a falrly new garage It had been built about a year ago and it was ln good condltlon Tt had a cement floor furnace and was well equlpped w1th tools And automoblle supplles One nlght Joe was alone and worklng late in an effort to get Doc Jones car repa1red 1n case og an emergency call Pe had Just crawled out from under the car and smoked about half a clgarette when the telephone rang On his way to the phone he passed an old panel truck whlch the owner had driven in to be fixed This truck had been sltting there Just behlnd the closed garage door for about two hours and as the roads were covered with snow there was a puddle of water under the truck Joe tossed h1s cigarette 1nto this expect1ng the water to put lt out Much to h1s surpr1se the water seemed to exp1ode,1mmed1ately the garage was fllled w1th smoke and the water covered with flames Joe grabbed the small f1re extlnguisher hanglng on the wall close at hand Fe d1rected the nozzle toward the flames but the extlngulsher was not equlpped to combat th1s type of f1re At once he thought of the water faucet behlnd the truck but he did not dare go behlnd the truck for fear the heat would blow the gas tank up Suddenly he thought, ran to the door on the other side of the garage through it and around to the garage doors behind the truck Breaklng the pane of glass in the door,he reached through and turned on the faucet full force Fe knew that the waterwould wash down the floor draln and take the fire with lt IIS thoughts proved true and thus saved h1s garage, equipment and several people cars George Plerce '50 I Q 66' w F m . Q Basketball xl ' Y - f4IiEg?i About the most popular event at Buxton is basketball This is enjoyed by both the boys and glrls There are seven schools in our league, and we play each one tw1ce once at home and once away Anyone who has never played in or watched a basketball game can never realize the thrill that comes from making a basket or even playing for a few minutes The great excltement of watchlng your own team w1n could never wrltten about It is an experience like nothing else Every boy and girl trles his hardest and that victory 18 h1s goal and reward Of course golng to the game 15 fun for we all go together on the bus It is also nice meeting people from other teams and ge+ting acqualnted with then Basketball must also be taken serlously for much time and hard work must be applied, but it is a wonderful sport and altogether loads of fun French Class Just twelve of us take French And we have lt every day I always thlnk lt is a cinch For Ruthie makes it gay From Jamie comes most anythlng Even though 1t's not so brlght Poor Blaine 18 always worrying For fear he'll stay tonlght Sally Davis '51 I Ronnle daily makes a speech To prevent it's being dry But out of Thelma not a peep Then, brave Bhlllp takes a try! If Joyce were dumb and Charlie smart, I wonder how 'twould seem? Me'd study verbs, and translate And call lt gust a dream When teacher's patience sore is trled And she this class would banish, ae've yet these three to save the day Sylvla Pauline and Glennls hdith Townsend '51 buperman F8115 Once there was a llttle boy who thought he would play Superman So his mother made him a Superman su1t nNow Wthought the llttle boy,HSuperman has nothlng on me U So he got his frlends together and thought up a good game When he saw his friends putting on a make believe murder he zoomed off the rooftop But alas,he lost slght of h1s crooks and the next thlng he knew he was in the hospital with a broken leg. When he came home his mother asked him if there was anyt ing she could do for him. nYes,'h,will you write and ask buperman how he jumps off a house and doesn't break his leg?' W lwlllqt .M Ag? .
