“L1terary Anne remembered well the year she had turned thirteen, a very lmportant one for her,because that year,at la t she would be a freshman at hlgh school She had Rlsen excltedly at 5 5O,dres ed 1n her best gingham and hurried off to school ls she drew near,her heart pounded Her COHf1d8nCe faded her steps slowed as the schoolhouse suddenly loomed into V16W Once she got 1ns1de her fears subslded for everybody seemed more friendly than she had imaglned Later that day lt seemed that she had always been there,that she belonged and the days sllpped 1nto years untll graduatlon day How proud she had been'Her name shone clearly on the program Uviss Anne Wlntersn salutatory It had been such a long tlme and yet lt seemed llke yesterday,clearer and more real than today She read on The names of her classmates were the e,she'd nearly forgotten them,yet now their faces were clearly lmprlnted 1n her mind as they were then always laughlnv or gay What fun they had had 1n those years together! Suddenly a door opened and a ch1ld's volce cut 1nto her thoughts, Hurand ma are you thereqn Anne answered,HYes,my ch1ld,come W The years faded and w1th a Jolt Anne came back to the present Wlt must have been a dream Nshe thought,Hbut lt all seemed so reallu Then she law the program 1n her lap and she knew tat she had merely been lost ln her thoughts She smlled gently and read,WUommencement Exerclses Class of 1900 W S1gh1ng,she looked about her Then her eyes came to rest on the calender confirmlng her thoughts Her graduation had been just fifty years ago today Nancy Mason '50 Flame One day at Sam Lawson's ranch ln Rock Sprlngs the cowhands were up early and out 1n the stable Thls was the long awaited day Sam's pr1ze mare,Jub1lee wa golng to foal The exclted boys hurr1ed and when they opened the stable and looked in there was Jub1lee,proud as punch for beslde her on the straw lay a llttle red colt The boys trying to get came his rear fellow was on began to feel went in and watched them J1m the foreman sa1d,UHey,fellers he' up Wand sure enough he was Up came both his front feet and slowly Then crash! he was down But he wouldn't g1ve up,no s1r,that llttle h1s feet in no tlme L13 mam y gave hlm an encouraging nlcker and he pretty b1g Crash,down he went The boys watched him awhlle and then went to work w1th thelr morning chores Suddenly,gallop1ng horses were heard Sam and J1m ran out,Sam shouting, WHe's comlng fast and by the looks of pulled up,WYou'd better round up your prair1e flre headed this way and it's his horse he's been r1d1ng hard 'The rider stock and head for the river There s a comlng fast U At thls the r1der turned and started for the r1ver himself Ndurry up boys, and round up Pe ran to the barn and lt was then he the herd I'll get the cow ponles Nsaid Sam remembered the foal He saddled Jubllee and mounted th1nking the foal would follow But it would not de tried again,but still the foal would not move F1nally,he plcked up the squlrmlng colt and laid lt on hi mammy's wlthers He then mounted and drove the horses out of the corral The boys were ready w1th the herd Sam's w1fe,Jean,was ready with the buckboard and some belonglngs Just as they started the f1re caught the edge of the barn The little foal was wriggling to get free of hls master's grlp They were only one Jump ahead of the flre all the way to the r1ver When the f1re finally died down the boys started back to the ranch to see the damage The little foal was st1ll k1ck1ng w1ld1ng but was soon qulet J1m askedH'hat will you name him?H Sam repliednl think I'll call hlm 'Flamen Nancv Dean '55 l . .
