V65 H2602 The start of four valuable years in the hves of Butte Highs energetxc freshmen reflected 1n the ghttenng pool of tlme the approach ot the practrcal and sturdy founders of Butte These frrst year students are proneerrnq thelr educatlon as earher men blazed the tralls to Montana and 1ts treasure Challenged and undaunted by the mountam locked undevel oped regxon the p1oneers and prospectors came and made a c1ty Dlscovery of gold tn Calrtornra 1I'1 1848 and tts subsequent result the search throughout the West for S1ff111CI!' rlches speeded Mon tanas development In 1852 Francxs Fmdlay called Benetsee washed gold ln the sands of Gold Creek some flfty mrles from Butte and launched the state s m1n1ng hrstory Eleven years later at Alder Gulch the state s r1chest placers were made known and thousands flocked there and to other placer locatrons The next year when Humphreys and All1son washed gold on S1lver Bow Creek Butte was begun though the lOWI'1S1le was not 1a1d out unt11 867 Non 1ucrat1ve placers gave way to permanent quartz m1n1ng was on s1lver but from the 1880 s Butte became and rernamed a great copper center One of the three Copper Krngs Marcus Daly was largely responsxble for the early development of the copper rndustry here Wrllram Andrews Clark who had crmved 1n 1875 and F Augustus Hemze who came to Butte 1n 1889 were the others of the tr1o who trgured rn the spectacular battle for control of the copper resources that was the Copper War of 1896 1903 Butte became a thr1v1ng metropolrs wlmch drew people here W1111 1ts prorrnses of economtc advancement In the decade 1880 1890 the populatron of the c1ty trebled and trebled agam by 1910 to reach over 30 000 this growlng populatton emoyed completely the excnernent of the boornxng camp These men made a deep 1mpress1on 1n the early development of our crty state and natron and so may therr prototypes m the freshman class of Butte Hrgh 1nfluence the future progress of the local communrty of Montana and of the Unxted States fn? 1 . about 1875 and set Butte's destiny.
