So here's a toast to our unseen future, A future on which the stars beam, May it hold all our hopes and wishes, Fulfillment of our starlit dream. PLu T0 MARS' ....1-3 H-f-if ,., 1.--iQ -Q -i--1-Q -.,f n flencunr W To you, Coach Dahlberg, we dedicate this, our I947 Bulldog, to commemorate your twenty-fifth year of service at Butte high school. In football nine teams coached by you won state championships, one team was co-champ, and four teams merited second place. ln basketball you developed eight teams which won first place in district or state competition. Eleven of your teams took first place in state track finals while another eleven finished second. Through this quarter century your teams have brought fame and recognition to Butte and Butte high school. No other coach in state secondary schools can boast a comparable record. Moreover, this silver jubilee year we commend your success as a teacher in the field of physical education where you have distinguished yourself. This story of our travels in the universe we dedicate to you. ln the years that are to come we know you'll add further successes and increase the prestige of our Alma Mater in sports circles. MISS ROSE DEENEY After o brief illness Miss Rose Deeney, popular teacher, died October 24, l946. She had been an instructor in the history department for many years and was widely known and well thought of in this community. Her students remember her kindly helpfulness and her calm patience. Her death made us pause in our hurrying journey to think seriously not only of our educational goal but also the objectives of our whole life. This reflection made us wish that when it comes our time to leave this world we may have led a life as useful as hers and that we may be remembered with love and grief by so many. LOWELL W. JOHNSON Superintendent of Schools Principal Our Journey to the Sun has been made smoother and happier by the capable assistance given to us by the administration. Throughout our long travel we have been aware of the willingness of the office corps to assist us efficiently. Although he does not come into contact with the student body fre- quently, City Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Lowell Johnson, has given us the feeling that he is behind the scenes, always ready to lend aid to us and our projects. Principal George E. Haney's thoughtfulness and wise guidance have made the seniors confident that we could turn to him in our needs and troubles. We have all appreciated his readiness to supply any assistance to make our trip to the sun easier. GEORGE E. HANEY STANLEY W, Assistant THULA RODES Deo ASg,' n of Girls Sfqnf P . flncjpol Miss Thula Rodes, Dean of Girls, will be long remembered by every one. She has been our understand- ing friend and leader throughout our long trek from planet to planet. Midge, as he is af- fectionately known, Mr. Stanley Griffiths, official- ly, has a special place in the memories of all. He has in- deed been our friend in need -always ready with encour- agement and guidance for our class. Everyone in the grad- uating class will sincerely miss him. A great number ofthe class of '47 has nostalgic memories of sessions in that ever-popular sev- enth period under Assistant Prin- cipal Harris' supervision. Popu- larly known as Jimmy, he is well-liked by all the student body and especially by those who were members of his sociology classes. CAR YL BA MAN MARGARET MILLER The girls in the main office, Margaret Miller and Caryl Bauman have given us the cooperation and service that leaves us truly grateful. In April of this year, Margaret left her position to take up the job of being Mrs. Joseph Edwards. With her went the best wishes of the entire senior class. One of our own classmates, Helen Marshall, began work in the office replacing Margaret. These girls have been an inspiration to us on our interplanetary adventure. CLASS OFFICERS Student Council Representative JOHN PETFORD President CHRIS DEMOS Secretary RICHARD EVANS Vice-President ROBERT LENZ Unsetl Treasurer IRENE BOYD Out of the grade schools came 342 students who started their interplanetary journey to the sun as freshmen. Starting from the planet Pluto, they have completed lap one of the flight under the guidance of their advisers, Misses Sadie Erickson and Ethel Blom- gren, who will direct them for the entire four year trip. From their own budding starlets they elected as first year officers: Chris Demos, president, Robert Lenz, vice president, Richard Evans, secretary, Irene Boyd, treasurer, and John Petford, student council representatvie. The path they have taken will be well lighted by many stars and constella- tions, and as they go they will attain a greater knowledge of the universe. Under the baton of Wilbur Sims, they have entertained the student body and many fraternal organizations throughout the city since their organization. Their musical endeavors were aided by the junior class, who purchased the sheet music and donated the music stands, which were made in the woodworking department. In their appearances, individuals have had solo billing. These include Wil- bur Sims, trumpetist in Coquette , Al Chabai, clarinetist in Night and Day , Art Pascoe, trumpetist in Night and Day , Bill Kolman, saxophonist in A Pretty Girl , Charles Hewitt, pianist in Bumble-Boogie. Trumpet- ist, Art Pascoe also arranged several of the band numbers, notably Camp- town Races. These l3 boys were always eager to help in any project and their smooth style won the admiration of all listeners. After their initial appearance in the junior class assembly, they played for several school functions and for the Masonic Lodges at their Washington Day Program. Although five are members of the class of I947, the remaining eight plan to add more members and build the band up to its peak again. SENIOR HISTORY The class of '47 has at last reached its place on the sun. The arduous but lighthearted journey is finished. That bleak day in January of I943 when l68 frightened freshmen entered the universe of high school, the sun seemed far away. For, as usual, the freshmen were exiled to the dark neglect of Pluto. ln September the re- mainder of '47's seniors, 372 in number, joined this educational world. Representatives of the class chose Miss Phyllis Haag and Miss Lucy Lynch class advisers. Rodger Lawney, Jim Leslie, Donna Driscoll, and Bobby Dunaway become freshman class officers. The world was in the middle of awful chaos and the freshmen, with the rest of the school, contributed in an infinitesimal but effective way toward ending it by participating in drives-paper, tin cans, and war stamps. Although juvenile delinquency ran rampant over the country, their class was hardly touched by it. ln their sophomore year '47's rulers saw a great defense against the evil grow up, since civil leaders preferred to pre- vent rather than to cure. The Teen Square came about slowly and with much urging, but on April 6, l944, it opened. When sophomores, today's seniors had Wilbur Sims, Jim Leslie, Marjorie Kalousek, and Patty Lou Mitchell as leaders. ln that same year HANDS CLASS WITH RINGS one of their guiding stars, Miss Haag, joined the Waves, and Miss Florence Charles tookher place as class adviser. Then came l945. The only national president they had ever known died. This change meant confusion for them as for all the world. Soon after, V-E day was announced. Victory in Europe brough a short program and the rest of the day off. '47's chil- dren did their first victory celebration up right. During the summer vaca- tion they had their second and, they staunchly hope, their last end-of-war fling. As juniors the class began to think of arrival on the sun as an imminent pos- sibility. The prom had the theme Starlit Future which is carried out in the Bulldog Eddy Price, Bill W. Smith, Norma Luke, and Wilene Cortese led them through that year. Senior year was as always, constant excitement, with scholarships, formals, Bohunkus, and books. Bill Denos, Jimmy Purcell, Marjorie Kalousek, and Kay Whalen led them during this busy time. Again this class, numbering only 286 and 24 servicemen now, must go to a new universe, that of business or college. Some will fall like meteors into nothingness, others will rise to their rightful place in the sun. 4.,,,'x L f IYJREY. --fx 'Zi ag fl X -Q 53551, n ,xy-1 5' YT 27 ' 'Tic ,.f w, J X-f Ts 9.4 ,Ek 'X Q bil- .. Phyllis was second and Shirley placed third. Jack, who ranked first among boy entrants, received a scholarship. No written test was required. A personal letter, written by the applicant, and stating the student's accomplishments and qualifications for the scholarship, were the main re- quirements. Other letters by the family and three or four reliable citizens of the commun- ity were considered in the judgment. A scholarship record of 90 or better was required and the scholarships were awarded to those who might not otherwise have been able to attend college. Phyllis, in addition to being highest-ranking girl in her class at midterm, served this semester as co-editor of the Mountaineer. She worked after school for the Mon- tana Labor News as bookkeeper. Phyllis for her four years, daily traveled l5 miles by school bus from her home in Gregson. Active in school activities throughout her en- tire high school career, Shirley worked part- time at the J. C. Penney Company, ROBERT T. TAYLOR i Jack, too, was employed outside school at the l Intermountain Bus Co. He took part in many activities and was a member of the annual editorial staff. National honorable mention in the Westing- house talent Search and a certificate of merit in the Pepsi-Cola scholarship contest were only two of the achievements of senior Robert Taylor. He and Donald Lambert of Senior High in Billings were the two Montana stu- dents who received recognition in the West- inghouse national competition. ln addition to his Pepsi-Cola certificate, Bob will receive fifty dollars when he enters college. High in the scholarship ratings of his class, Bob was elected to tlteclxlagifnnal Honor society Besides keepi g up his high gtadesw-Bob has been actlve'i+Fboth band and orchestra. PEP CLUB Piercing the heights of the stars and skies with a deafening crescendo the Pep Club, led by six cheerleaders, provided each of Butte high s sports ac tivities with a lively rooting section. The Pep club's suggestion that the school help provide transportation for out-of-town football games resulted in hundreds of Butte high school stu- dents going to Billings by chartered buses and to Great Falls by chartered train. The Pep club displayed their fine spirits at games, assemblies, and rallies, being the spark plugs for school enthusiasm and spirit. Active all year, they have added to their roster many underclossmen who will keep the ideals of the organization alive and will provide new leaders for the following seasons. The clubs elect new officers each semester. Their programs conducted on Friday consist of reports on a South American country and a musical program by members of the club. A portion of each meet- MISS AGATHA KELLY ing is spent in learning and singing Spanish songs. Dues paid into the club are expended wisely. A piano has been bought, which is used during the programs, and for last Christmas ci crib scene or Nacimiento was pur- chased by the club. The figures, more than a foot high, formed an impres- sive scene during the Christmas season. The club also has its own official emblem and pins are purchased tbytthe members. The officer's pins have guards denoting their office. The pin, a blue disc with an outline of the western hemisphere in gold surrounded by 2l gold links denoting the 2l Latin-American republics and engraved with Pan American Student League in gold letters, is superimposed on a gold torch of learning. While promoting a better understanding and feeling of good will among the nations of the western hemisphere, these clubs add variety to the Spanish curriculum. PROJECTION CLUB The task of presenting entertaining movies was well handled by this year's Proiection club. Throughout the school term many fine pictures were shown to the school in assemblies. Pictures on sports-skiing, football, baseball, nature, and films on education have been seen by the student body this year. Handling a movie camera is not an easy task, for it re- quires careful work. Under the direction of Miss Rita McGrath they have learned to handle the camera, insert the film, and focus it on the screen. Because of their good service to school, the Projection club has shot its way into an honored space. National winners in the test, taken on February l4, I947, are eligible to full tuition to any accredited college in the country. Two students from every state in the Union and the Dis- trict of Columbia receive scholarships each year. Along with the tuition goes twenty-five dollars a month and one round trip home from college each year. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Here are Butte high school's outstanding students. ln order to merit mem- bership in the National honor society they had to have a scholarship average of at least 2.2 Moreover, they have displayed leadership ability and good character, and have rendered service to the school. However, it was not until the beginning of this school year that the council really began to function. Purposing to promote school spirit and coopera- tion rather than to provide student government the council includes repre- sentatives from every organization in school, from each of the four classes, several faculty members, and Principal George Haney. The first activity of the council this year was settling the question of wear- ing monogram sweaters in school. The council passed a set of restrictions to be enforced by the B club. This fall the council sponsored many mixer dances to help the P. T. A. Its main project for this year was a school clean-up campaign, in an effort to make Butte high school not only the best, but the cleanest in the state. An assembly movie on sanitation launched this campaign. When Teen Square closed, the council took on the outside task of finding a new recre- ation center for the students. The officers for this year were Bob Martin, president, Charles Caraway, vice-president, Billie Lou Berget, secretary, and Beverly Hanley, treasurer. New at Butte high school, the council's value has already been proved. ln future years it should help Butte high shine a little brighter. By providing a regular news- paper for the school, the Mountaineer staff has earned a space among the planets. ln ordinary times this would be routine for a journalism class, but nothing about staff problems was ordinary this year. First, the Fourth Es- taters found that an unusually heavy demand for printed ma- terials prevented a regular printing of the paper. When threatened with complete sus- pension of the paper, the Mountaineer writers finally located an out-of-town printer. The staff, con- sisting mainly of cubs and only three veterans, had the Mountaineer on a twice-a-month schedule by December. The journalists, like Haley's comet, which blazes a trail of glory across the glittering heavens, brightened the school scene by regular, ac- curate and reliable news reporting. Under the competent direction of Mr. Ray Bunday, the students mastered the course. Some needed it for college requirements, or nurses' training, a few were satisfying their curiosity about chemical mysteries, and still others were interested in the practical application of chemistry. PHYSICS DEPARTMENT lnstructed by Miss Margaret Small the physics department students are doing an excellent job in preparing to make practical use of this science. The two-semester course lays the ground work for more advanced study in physical science. Students learn self-dependence by doing individ- ual experiments in addition to those done by the class collectively. Underclassmen are introduced to science thr h 9 oug courses in biology and eneral science. l FR 'ef' COACH HARRY DAHLBERG Coach Dahlberg in this twenty-fifth year at Butte high, retained his repu- tation as dean of the state's coaches. His l946-47 teams continued to dem- onstrate fine sportsmanship, aggres- siveness in play, and the all-around qualities of good athletes. Mr. Dahl- berg did a splendid job in coaching the boys of the senior class on the athletic field, and more important, in character-building by giving them guidance in developing manliness, courtesy and integrity. -il M Mr. Hawke has been doing a fine job as assistant coach in athletics. A World War ll veteran, Bill served four years as a captain in the Army Air Forces. This was his tenth year in the Butte high athletic department where he has handled many boys who later became stars. Up to the i946- I947 season Bill was coach of the Reds but this season he put in most of his time assisting Mr. Dahlberg with the main Bulldog squads. iw Row 1, left to right: Joe Roberts, Bob Edwards, Jack Anderson, Bill Lindsay, Bob McKechnie, Joe Chelini. Row 2: Asst. Coach Bill Hawke, Bill Hatcher, George Tar- rant, Lee Wattula, Charles Stears, George Yucurovich, Glen Welch, Richard Cannon. Dick Menke, Manager Sherman Keyser. Row 3: Asst. Coach Morris Driscoll, George Hudrlleston, Ed Shelton, John Calcaterra, Bob Schulte, Bill W. Smith, Bruce Goilrlaril. Tom LeProwse, Dick Griffin, Rulon Limb, Coach Dahlherg. THE BUTTE HIGH BULLDUGS The '46 team was one of the finest teams ever to represent Butte high school. Although it didn't win the state championship, it did provide its backers with many moments of thrills. When the final scores were in, the Bulldogs had gained the city championship, and stood third in the Big Six conference. QA,-L SL v 26' Oxy cf QL S HER MAJESTY, EILEEN Q Eileen Markovich, a pretty junior, was chosen the first Gridiron Queen of Butte high school. She won the hon- or because of her spirit, attractiveness and support of the team. Al- though outweighed in many instances, the purple and white line gave a splendid account of itself in every contest. Tom LeProwse, center, B. W. Smith, tackle, Rulon Limb, guard, John Calcaterra, tackle, and Bob Schulte, end, merited positions on all-state teams. These boys, all seniors, will not return next year, but will add color and strength to various college teams. FIRST-SQUAD BACKFIELD The Bulldog backfield was the combination which gave the team its vaunted attack. These boys are also seniors, and are two-letter men. Vucurovich's deceptiveness, Welsh's speed, Hatcher's bulling his way through a line, to- gether with Cannon's passing and plunging, made up one of the best units in high school football in Montana. Hatcher and Vucurovich merited positions on several all-state teams. Left to right: Vucurovich, Welch, Cannon, Hatcher. Left to right: Joe Roberts, Bruce Goddard, Bob Edwards, Jack Anderson, Joe Chelini, George Huddleston, Dick Griffin, Ed Shelton. SECOND TEAM LINE These boys saw nearly as much action as the regulars. Roberts a junior, was promoted to the first team, and was awarded a po- sition on an all-state team for his fine play. These huskies are underclassmen except for Ed Shelton and Dick Griffin. Judging by the size and ability of this line, Butte high will offer strong gridiron competition next season. SECOND TEAM BACKFIELD Composed of seniors, all but one of whom were awarded a monogram, this backfield was especially commended for its performance against the Bobkittens of Montana State. These were the boys who made the main team. These men worked hard to retain their positions. BUTTE BULLDOGS OF 1947 Butte high basketeers of l946-l947 played a tough schedule and came through by placing ninth in the big sixteen. They participated in two tournaments, an invitational one in Havre, in which they placed third and the southern division tournament in Billings from which they came out in titth place just missing a chance to enter the state tournament. When this season started Coach Dahlberg had only three returning letter- men on this squad, tour seniors and six juniorsg all players earned their letters this year. With all the experience the team had this season and with six lettermen back, next year should find Butte right on top ot the big sixteen. ......1--1-- 0. Adviser This year's B club has been an active organi- zation due to the splendid cooperation of its entire membership. Throughout the school year the organization sponsored four dances and tive parties, in ad- dition to this it was the B club that sold cold drinks and candy bars at basketball games. Home teams and visitors were served refreshing soft drinks after each basketball game in the interest of promoting good sports- manship. The over-all project of this B club has been promoting the athletic program at Butte high school. The B club thanks all persons and organiza- tions who assisted in carrying out the l946- 47 program. :dk 53 -B3 r ' Q yl S -if? 'Q 5 P' L . if -:-.: 0 :-:. me quvu f ag PW L 1 ff? .2?j wu 5 4 iw.
