The MOUNTAINEER CLAS B TE Hlcsu S 1938 ANNUAL DEDICATION Mr. Gold, we have chosen.you as the receiver of this dedication because your personality coincides with what our Annual contains .. . . good scholars, good sports, and varied activities. Dedicating our book to you makes us proud. Right now its value is comparatively small. Several years hence it will be doubled by the memories it brings to life of our once high school days. Your name, Mr. Gold, will appear at the top of our list of memories. We shall see you as a great leader. Someone whom we, as students, liked to follow. Take this book as one containing the memories of four pleasant years of high school. It contains the thoughts, actions, and hopes of a class who deems you as the worthiest one to receive it. Take it-not as so much printed paper between two covers-but, as a living diary from your best friends--THE CLASS OF 1938. WILLIAM K. I doubt if the graduates from the high schools of this country in any one year have faced more serious responsibilities than do you who graduate in 1938. I doubt if We have ever known times in which the American people had less confidence in the ultimacy of their institutions than they have today. I doubt if as a people We have ever 'known less definition of purpose or greater confusion of tongues. You are going to have the job of keeping America a democracy. Do not assume that this will be so simple a task. Some of the world's greatest democracies have recently stepped off the na.rrow path which we in America feel leads to the type of government which brings the greatest happiness and the greatest personal liberty to those who participate in it. Individuality of thought and freedom of speech are as sacred today as they were to- the framers of our g'overnment. Without posing as an alarmist I believe that their preservation will definitely be your task. I have full faith in you-I believe that you will meet this responsibility. You have been Well pre- pared for whatever is ahead of you, and I believe as the years come that no emergency, personal, social or political will find you lacking in clear thought or Wanting in competent judgment. You had nothing to do with bringing these dangerous days to the world but you will have responsibility in ridding the world of them. You have yourselves to give to the world. May the following lines be, in the future, an aid to our recollections of four happy years together. In the fall of the year 1934 there entered the portals of Washington High School 675 seekers of knowledge to be hence- forth known as the Class of '38. Talent and ambition walked hand in hand and it was not long before the members of the Class made their presence felt in ath- letics, in drama, in forensics, and in all student activities. The Freshman foot- ball team, under the excellent supervision of Coach Bill Hawke, turned in a fine record of ten wins and two ties, topping the season with a spectacular 6-0 victory over the highly touted Centerville eleven. In basketball our team repeated their performance by winning the intra-mural league race and defeating Freshman teams of other cities by outstanding scores. The Copper Call, the Freshman publi- cation, under the sponsorship of Miss Lucille McQuaig, showed that the Class of '38 had literary talent and business ability as well as physical prowess. The year passed quickly but the Freshmen had established the.mselves well. Returning as Sophomores to old Butte High, their number somewhat thinned but with the same old pep, the class immediately organized and elected class officers. Later in the term Bernice Archer, the President, left school, and Vice-President George Watson took over the office. Miss Elderkin and Mr. Brad- ford were elected class advisers. The members were as aggressive as ever and the names of our classmates shone bright- ly in school activities and in scholarship. The Junior year was one of the most successful. At the first class meeting held Bob Sparks was ele-cted Presidentg Margueritte Kane, V ice-President, Eliza- beth Goyette, Secretary, and Ruth Han- son, Treasurer. It was during this year that Betty Raymond won the first award in the State Declamation Contest held at Missoula, and Tom Wilkinson was a member of the Butte debating team which narrowly lost the decision in the State finals. The Junior Prom, a social event of the School year held at the Columbia Gardens, was the scene of gay music, flashing colors, pomp and splen- dor, an occasion of much enjoyment long to be remembered. The class assembled for its final year 385 strong, the same class officers being retained. The football season was one of continuous victory, thanks to the abil- ity of graduating seniors, ably assisted by underclassmen. Butte High was again State Champion. The Senior play, Pride and Prejudice, was a brilliant success. At the close of the semester, the old Butte High School, occupied since 1896, was left behind, and students and teach- ers took up their work in the new million dollar building. It was the privilege of the Senior class to be guides during the Open House held there January 8, 1938, and theirs the privilege of being the first class to graduate from the new building. In sports, as in social life, the Senior class was the leader. The captains of all sports were seniors and the class was well represented in band, glee clubs and orchestrag they were leaders in the Senate-, the Science Club, girls' clubs and all school activities. Bohunkus Day, the Seniors' own, was fittingly and hilar- iously observed. They did more than uphold tradition with their unique pro- gram and costumes heretofore unequaled in cleverness and originality. And so with the Senior Banquet and graduation approaching, four years of labor, joy, and excitement draw to a close and we leave this unparalleled record as an inspiring example for other classes to follow. This Class, unlike manysothers before its time, has not dis- tinguished itself because of individual stars, but because of members of the Class all working together for the glorification of all. Because of this, this Will leaves class virtues rather than individual honors to the Butte High student body. 4 First we leave the new building to the new students as a place ready for honors and fame, ready to be respected because of the prowess of her student body. Next we leave the halls with their trysting places to the faithful couples who already seem to have so well gotten into the habit of meeting the steady at some particuar part of the school. At this time we leave the rooms and the teachers to our successors. The rooms as seats of learning, and teachers as founts of knowledge and' patient long- suffering individuals. They've. put up with our whims and caprices for four years, or longer, and we feel that they can be considered an asset rather than a liability. To properly summarize a document of this kind We should will the esthetic as well as the material things that are to be willed. We leave the ideals of this school to the lower classes, and hope that they will maintain them at their present level, or better yet, elevate them to new heights. . A In conclusion we would like to offer a tribute to Old Butte High. It's bettered us both morally and men- tally, and in passing we hope that we have detracted nothing from the glory that is hers.
